When my alarm went
off this morning, it didn’t take me long to get out of bed. Game
days are always so exciting, especially when we play CMS, our
biggest rivals! I always get a little nervous before important
games, so it’s a good thing that I have plenty to keep me busy
before kickoff this afternoon.
Before breakfast I did some research for a Spanish paper that I
have to write this weekend. On my way to the ceramics studio, I
stopped by the dining hall to have breakfast with some of my
friends on the basketball team. They know what being a
student-athlete is all about and I always appreciate their
support. Then I headed off to pottery, my only class today.
Pomona has an art requirement, and I’m really enjoying learning
how to throw on the wheel. We just unloaded our first kiln today
so we spent most of class admiring each other’s glazed pots.
After pottery I walked over to Mason Hall to meet with my
Spanish teacher about the paper. I presented my idea to her and
she really liked it so now I know I’m off to a good start. This
class is definitely my most challenging but I love it and I know
it’s preparing me to study abroad in southern Mexico next
semester.
One of the highlights of the day was having lunch with my
parents and some friends in the Village. Being from the east
coast, I don’t get to see my parents that much so it’s great
having them here. They both really love soccer so I know they
are looking forward to the game today.
I usually have a history class about early Western civilizations
on Thursday afternoons but today our professor was in
Philadelphia for a conference so I had a little more free time
before I had to go to the locker room. I used it to get caught
up on some emails and to pick up my study abroad handbook in the
mailroom.
Whenever my teammates and I get together, we always have a great
time, and today was no exception. When I arrived in the locker
room some of the other girls were already there and we were all
so excited about the game. Today’s routine was a little
different from normal, given that we were supposed to play
yesterday but the game was rained out. I did make sure that I
stopped in the training room to get my pre-game high fives from
our awesome trainers though. Usually we have a team meeting
before we walk down to the field, but lots of people were coming
straight from class today so we just talked briefly before
warm-up. The field was still soggy but it didn’t matter: we were
all ready to go!
From the very first minute of the game, the team played with
heart, intensity, toughness, and amazing skill. We scored ten
minutes into the game and never looked back. CMS had some close
chances, but we defended stubbornly and never let them break
through. At halftime Coach gave us a few pointers but basically
just got us psyched to win. The second half was a battle, but we
scored again to put us up 2-0. We had a few more chances on
attack and kept the defense tight, and as the announcer started
counting down the last ten seconds, we started celebrating our
first win against CMS since 1997. It was awesome!
Afterwards, I went out to dinner with my parents and then got to
hang out with my roommate. She’s also an athlete so she
understood how cool it was to beat CMS today. Before bed I did
some more homework for classes tomorrow…it’s all part of being a
student-athlete.
Today reminded me of why I am always so proud to be a part of
this team. After last year, we refused to believe that a last
place finish in our conference was the best we could do, and we
all worked hard to make a change. This program has become
something very special, and it is amazing to feel like I have
played even a small part in that transition. We are currently in
second place, and while we have two more games ahead of us, we
are excited about our accomplishments so far this season. It’s a
great time to be a Sagehen! |
