Adapted Physical Education - (with Instructor's

Physical Education activity toward improving one=s

This class will combine two types of aerobic activity,
kick boxing aerobics and kwando. The class is designed to
enhance cardiovascular development, improve flexibility, and
increase strength.

and fitness. Help people establish healthy habits that get
them off the dieting gain/lose cycle that gradually turns
the human body into a glob of fat with artery disease. Have

Beginning fundamentals of target archery including
instinctive point-of-aim and sight shooting...a mind-over

Bowling class offers a great opportunity to learn a
lifetime sport and is open to all skill levels. Instruction
includes how to select a ball, basic approach and delivery,
scoring and etiquette. Class is organized as a mini league
and meets at Upland Bowl on Foothill Blvd. Students are
responsible for own transportation. The weekly fee includes
2 games and shoes. Fee.
Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries -
Instructor: Kirk Jones
The intent of this course is to offer the student a
practical overview of the care and prevention of athletic
injuries. Students should acquire the skills necessary to
appropriately recognize and manage injuries sustained to
athletes and be able to apply adhesive tape in various
forms.
CPR/Adv. First Aid Emergency Response -
Instructor: Staff
The CPR/Adv. First Aid class is designed to give students
the confidence and ability to perform first aid skills in
case of an emergency. The course includes texts,
lecture/discussion and skills practice. In addition,
students will receive American Red Cross Certification in
adult, infant, and child CPR as well as in Advanced First
Aid. Fee.
Cardio and Weight Training – Instructor: Lisa

It is the goal of the class to introduce the student to
the principles of total well-being and provide exposure to a
wide array of training methods. This class will also
implement individualized programs deigned to meet sound
fitness goals as well as personal goals.
Each class period will include exercises to improve
flexibility, cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular strength
and endurance. Cardiorespiratory activities will include
walking, jogging, hiking, stationary bike, water exercise
and aerobics to music. Muscular strength and endurance
activities will include free-weight and Cybex weight
training, as well as gravitational resistance exercises.
Each student will complete a diet analysis exercise and
prudent nutritional guidelines will be discussed. Various
methods of relaxation and stress reduction will also be
presented.

The Alexander Technique is a pragmatic method for
exploring the basis of human movement, understanding how we
interfere with out own coordination, and how we can change
unconscious physical habits. Journals and outside practice
periods are part of the course.
Dance, Ballet I - Instructor: Jolley/ Lamourex /

Beginning ballet stressing fundamentals of classical
ballet. Students learn basic dance vocabulary at the barre
and in the center and develop coordination, musicality,
alignment and harmony of line.
Dance, Ballet II - Instructor: Koenig
Intermediate class expanding basic dance vocabulary of
Ballet I. Barre and center with attention to alignment,
musical phrasing, dynamics, harmony of line, and ease of
movement. Provides student with strong base technique which
can be applied to a wide range of disciplines.
Dance, Ballet III - Instructor: Koenig
Advanced class including barre and center with increasing
stress on dynamics, musical phrasing, and physical aplomb
stripped of artifice. Students expand dance vocabulary and
perfects ease of movement and harmony of line. The student
attains strong base technique which can be applied to a wide
range of disciplines. For half course or cumulative credit.
Dance, Contra - Instructor: Cristanne Miller
Fast-paced "traditional dance, to live music," involving
many figures of square dancing and many additional figures.
No partner is required to join the class, although all
dances involve a partner. Contra dancing is easy to learn,
aerobic, and great fun. As the semester progresses, dances
become increasingly complex.
Dance, Hip Hop - Instructor: Cara Krisinger
This class is designed for students of all levels. The
emphasis in this class will be on style and choreography.
Class will begin with a detailed warm up of 10-15 minutes;
continue with progressions across the floor, and end with a
hip hop combination. A new hip hop routine will be taught
each week of this course. Tuesdays will be spent learning
the choreography, leaving Thursdays to review and fine tune

International style ballroom has a style all it=s
own. If you have seen ballroom on TV or seen the movie
ADance With Me@
you=ve seen the
kind of stuff you will learn in International classes. This
is also the style of ballroom used on the Claremont Colleges
Ballroom Dance Company. Students learn Rumba, Samba, and
Cha-Cha. More time is spent on learning true ballroom
technique and partnering. Medals exams are available for

This class not only raises the level of the steps that
are taught but also adds Paso Doble to the first three
dances. If you are interested in competitive ballroom
(especially Latin), this class is where you want to be.

This is the top level of International Latin American
ballroom. Dancers work hard on their technique and higher
skills to truly become accomplished performers. Dances
covered: Cha-Cha, Samba, Rumba and Paso Doble.
Prerequisite: You must take and pass a Silver Medals
Exam or equivalent to register for this class. Latin dance

Dance, International Standard, Beg. - Instructor:

In this class, students learn Quickstep, Tango and Waltz.
These are considerably different than the Social Dance
versions. This style is the kind used when the man wears a
tail suit and the lady a full and frilly ball gown. As with
International Latin, there is considerable focus on

Standard Ballroom Dance at an advanced (gold) level.
Instruction will be given in the International Style waltz,

Dance with a Jose Limon-based technique including
principles of fall and recovery, isolations of the body,
weight, and suspension, body alignment, dynamics, and
musical phrasing.

In depth exploration of modern dance technique, including
principles of fall and recovery, isolations of the body,
weight, and suspension. Introductory elements of
improvisation and composition. Special reading, critical
reviews, oral participation, and written assignments in

Dance, Modern Technique IV - Instructor: Cameron

Continues on a deeper level the work of modern dance III
and prepares students for advanced repertory. Classroom
study supplemented by selected readings, critical reviews,
and written assignments. Students will be assigned and
critiqued on various oral presentations throughout the
semester.
Dance, Repertory - Instructor: Cameron
Participation in two weeks by faculty, advanced students,
guest artist, or major choreographers. Students participate
in the reconstruction of a previously choreographed work or
contribute to the creation of a new work. Prerequisite:

This fun course introduces you to the fundamentals of
partner dancing. You will learn basic patterns in several
popular social dances such as Swing, Tango, Waltz, Cha-Cha
and salsa. By learning a few steps in a variety of dances
you will be able to hold your own on the dance floor after
one short semester. PE credit is available for this course

Take your social dancing to the next level. Learn more
advanced dances, such as the popular West Coast Swing, and
learn more steps for the dance taught in the beginning

Foil, epee, sabré movements, actions, techniques, tactics
and practical fencing; rules and directing. Fee.
Fencing, Saber: - Instructor: George Clovis
Saber fencing students will study the only "cutting"
sword used in modern European based fencing. Many people say
that saber allows a greater sense of freedom than do foil
and epee fencing. This is the swashbuckling weapon and yet
it is a relatively gentle martial art. Prior fencing
experience not required. Fee.

the roader. A person who can spend 30 minutes two or three

fitness program and through the use of various weight
training programs using machine and free weights. After an
initial aerobic circuit program to establish a fitness base,
the primary focus shifts to body sculpting as opposed to
body building.

Pickleball: - Instructor: Lisa Beckett
Pickleball has the combined features of badminton, tennis
and table tennis. The rallies are fun, exciting and can last
several minutes. It is easy to learn and you can get a great
workout, even as a beginner. It requires much less
athletic skill than tennis, and beginner rallies are much
longer. Basic instruction will be given on grips,
strokes, spins, strategies, and rules. Even with the many
strokes and strategies to learn, the student can actually
play the game of the first day of class. The class format
will include skill progressions, drills, free play and
competition.
Pilates – Mat Essentials – Instructor: Eli

The mat exercises combine a balance of exercises from a
seated, prone (lying on your stomach), supine (lying on your
back), or a side-lying position. This "balance" incorporates
movements of flexion (forward and lateral), extension, and
rotation of the spine.

You will learn a combo of stretching, strengthening, and
mind-body exercises. This is a low-impact workout that
improves core strength, balance and stabilization as well as
flexibility and posture.

Lifeguard Training is an American Red Cross course in
lifeguard skill, pool operation and aquatic safety. Course

WSI is an American Red Cross course in teaching methods
and aquatic safety. Successful completion leads to
certification as a Red Cross Swimming Instructor.

table tennis experience. Skill areas to be covered include

smash, and serves (sidespin, topspin, chop).

This course provides a review of the basic techniques of
beginning tennis (i.e. forehand, backhand serve, volley,
smash, and lob), plus a review of simple singles and doubles
strategies, rules and etiquette. Intermediate tennis
introduces such skill techniques as the approach shot, drop
shot, under spin and topspin, and more advanced singles and
doubles strategies.

The class will be required to stay until 12:30 P.M on two or
three occasions to allow for longer hikes. The class will
vote on the dates.
Beginning Triathlon/Training – Instructor: Penny
Lee Dean
This course teaches and refines swimming, biking and
running. It teaches nutrition for a
triathlon. The course teaches transitions from swim to bike
and bike to run. Stretching and equipment needs are also
covered. The course ends with an Olympic distance triathlon
Ultimate Frisbee: - Instructor: Kirk Reynolds
This class is for beginners wishing to learn the
fundamentals, skills and rules of Ultimate. The class will
teach basic skills of throwing deliveries (backhand,
sidearm, upside down), throwing awareness (faking, timing)
receiving (maneuvering, catching) and individual defense
(marker, defender) through instruction, demonstration, and
drills. As skills accumulate, playing experience will be
incorporated.
Volleyball, Int./Adv. - Instructor: Valerie Cowan
This course provides a review of the basic skills in
volleyball (i.e. passing, setting, hitting, blocking,
serving). Instructional content will also include various
defensive, offensive, serve receive and free ball
strategies. In addition, students will have ample time to
engage in game play. Varsity level experience preferred.
Wallyball – Instructor – Kirk Reynolds
The game is easy to learn. Just imagine an off-the-wall
volleyball game and you’ve got the basics. Wallyball is
played on a racquetball/handball court, where balls may be
hit off the side walls as well as directly over the net. The
ceiling is out of bounds, and so is the back wall if hit on
a serve or volley. However the receiving team can hit or
deflect the ball off its back wall to keep the action going.
Water Safety / Instructor Training – Staff
Water Safety Instructor is a method of teaching class
which will certify students to teach the American Red Cross
Classes from Infant to Basic Rescue. Intermediate swim
skills are required and much of the class time will be
utilized in swim theory, educational methodology and
practice teaching. Textbooks and materials will cost approx.
$40.00.
