It should be noted that certain classes may be offered in the fall only or in the spring only. Please check with the Registrar’s Office or the Physical Education Office for the official schedule of classes.

 

Adapted Physical Education - (with Instructor's Approval), ARRANGED

Instructor: Charles Katsiaficas/Staff

For students that have special needs to incorporate Physical Education activity toward improving one=s health or well being in overcoming Physical Disability, optional exposure to stretch activity as related to improving flexibility, cardiovascular improvement opportunity and or strength development exercise.

Aerobics, Cardio Kick Boxing - Instructor: Valerie Cowan

This class will combine two types of aerobic activity, kick boxing aerobics and kwando. The class is designed to enhance cardiovascular development, improve flexibility, and increase strength.

Aerobics, Int. - Instructor: Bill Banks

Improve cardiovascular and general health, coordination, and fitness. Help people establish healthy habits that get them off the dieting gain/lose cycle that gradually turns the human body into a glob of fat with artery disease. Have exercise with motivating music and supportive ambience so that it=s fun.

Archery, Beg. - Instructor: Kathy Connell / Frank Pericolosi / Jen Scanlon

Beginning fundamentals of target archery including instinctive point-of-aim and sight shooting...a mind-over matter endeavor.

Badminton, Beginning - Instructor: Pat Mulcahy/ Jen Scanlon

This class will cover basic badminton skills. The basic strokes, forehand, backhand, drops, clears and smashes will be practiced. Drills will be sued to develop the basic skills. The first half of the semester will be exclusively drills and hitting. The last half will be 20% drills then 80% competitive play, alternating between singles and doubles play.

This class will cover basic badminton skills. More advanced skill will be included when appropriate. Approximately 25% of our time will be spent on instruction and drills, 60% in play situations and 15% in competitive play. The first semester will be exclusively drills and hitting. The last half will be 20% drills then 80% competitive play, alternating between singles and doubles play.

Bowling - Instructor: Roger Caron / Ann Lebedeff / Frank Pericolosi / Bill Swartz

Bowling class offers a great opportunity to learn a lifetime sport and is open to all skill levels. Instruction includes how to select a ball, basic approach and delivery, scoring and etiquette. Class is organized as a mini league and meets at Upland Bowl on Foothill Blvd. Students are responsible for own transportation. The weekly fee includes 2 games and shoes. Fee.

Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries - Instructor: Kirk Jones

The intent of this course is to offer the student a practical overview of the care and prevention of athletic injuries. Students should acquire the skills necessary to appropriately recognize and manage injuries sustained to athletes and be able to apply adhesive tape in various forms.

CPR/Adv. First Aid Emergency Response - Instructor: Staff

The CPR/Adv. First Aid class is designed to give students the confidence and ability to perform first aid skills in case of an emergency. The course includes texts, lecture/discussion and skills practice. In addition, students will receive American Red Cross Certification in adult, infant, and child CPR as well as in Advanced First Aid. Fee.

Cardio and Weight Training – Instructor: Lisa Beckett

It is the goal of the class to introduce the student to the principles of total well-being and provide exposure to a wide array of training methods. This class will also implement individualized programs deigned to meet sound fitness goals as well as personal goals.

Each class period will include exercises to improve flexibility, cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular strength and endurance. Cardiorespiratory activities will include walking, jogging, hiking, stationary bike, water exercise and aerobics to music. Muscular strength and endurance activities will include free-weight and Cybex weight training, as well as gravitational resistance exercises.

Each student will complete a diet analysis exercise and prudent nutritional guidelines will be discussed. Various methods of relaxation and stress reduction will also be presented.

Dance, Alexander Technique - Instructor: S. Robbins

The Alexander Technique is a pragmatic method for exploring the basis of human movement, understanding how we interfere with out own coordination, and how we can change unconscious physical habits. Journals and outside practice periods are part of the course.

 

Dance, Ballet I - Instructor: Jolley/ Lamourex / Koenig

Beginning ballet stressing fundamentals of classical ballet. Students learn basic dance vocabulary at the barre and in the center and develop coordination, musicality, alignment and harmony of line.

Dance, Ballet II - Instructor: Koenig

Intermediate class expanding basic dance vocabulary of Ballet I. Barre and center with attention to alignment, musical phrasing, dynamics, harmony of line, and ease of movement. Provides student with strong base technique which can be applied to a wide range of disciplines.

Dance, Ballet III - Instructor: Koenig

Advanced class including barre and center with increasing stress on dynamics, musical phrasing, and physical aplomb stripped of artifice. Students expand dance vocabulary and perfects ease of movement and harmony of line. The student attains strong base technique which can be applied to a wide range of disciplines. For half course or cumulative credit.

Dance, Contra - Instructor: Cristanne Miller

Fast-paced "traditional dance, to live music," involving many figures of square dancing and many additional figures. No partner is required to join the class, although all dances involve a partner. Contra dancing is easy to learn, aerobic, and great fun. As the semester progresses, dances become increasingly complex.

Dance, Hip Hop - Instructor: Cara Krisinger

This class is designed for students of all levels. The emphasis in this class will be on style and choreography. Class will begin with a detailed warm up of 10-15 minutes; continue with progressions across the floor, and end with a hip hop combination. A new hip hop routine will be taught each week of this course. Tuesdays will be spent learning the choreography, leaving Thursdays to review and fine tune the combination. Fee.

Dance, International Latin, Beg. - Instructor: Christopher Witt

International style ballroom has a style all it=s own. If you have seen ballroom on TV or seen the movie ADance With Me@ you=ve seen the kind of stuff you will learn in International classes. This is also the style of ballroom used on the Claremont Colleges Ballroom Dance Company. Students learn Rumba, Samba, and Cha-Cha. More time is spent on learning true ballroom technique and partnering. Medals exams are available for International classes. This is the real stuff! Fee.

Dance, International Latin, Int. - Instructor: Christopher Witt

This class not only raises the level of the steps that are taught but also adds Paso Doble to the first three dances. If you are interested in competitive ballroom (especially Latin), this class is where you want to be. Prerequisite - Beginning Latin Fee.

Dance, International Latin, Advanced - Instructor: Christopher Witt

This is the top level of International Latin American ballroom. Dancers work hard on their technique and higher skills to truly become accomplished performers. Dances covered: Cha-Cha, Samba, Rumba and Paso Doble. Prerequisite: You must take and pass a Silver Medals Exam or equivalent to register for this class. Latin dance shoes and dance wear is required. Fee.

Dance, International Standard, Beg. - Instructor: Christopher Witt

In this class, students learn Quickstep, Tango and Waltz. These are considerably different than the Social Dance versions. This style is the kind used when the man wears a tail suit and the lady a full and frilly ball gown. As with International Latin, there is considerable focus on technique and partnering. Medals exams available. Fee.

Dance, International Standard, Int. - Instructor: Christopher Witt

More advanced steps and more fun as the level of dance rises. People will stop to watch you once you=ve made it through Intermediate Standard. Prerequisite - Beginning Standard. Fee.

Dance, International Standard, Adv. – Instructor: Christopher Witt

This course will provide instruction in International Standard Ballroom Dance at an advanced (gold) level. Instruction will be given in the International Style waltz, quickstep, tango, and foxtrot. Areas of technique such as posture, dance position, rhythm, leading and following, and footwork will be emphasized. Pre-requisite: Intermediate Standard Fee.

Dance, Modern Technique II - Instructor: Jolley / Cameron/ Pennington / Gadlin

Dance with a Jose Limon-based technique including principles of fall and recovery, isolations of the body, weight, and suspension, body alignment, dynamics, and musical phrasing.

Dance, Modern Technique III - Instructor: Cameron / Pennington

In depth exploration of modern dance technique, including principles of fall and recovery, isolations of the body, weight, and suspension. Introductory elements of improvisation and composition. Special reading, critical reviews, oral participation, and written assignments in addition to studio work. Prerequisite: Previous dance training or permission of instructor.

Dance, Modern Technique IV - Instructor: Cameron / Pennington

Continues on a deeper level the work of modern dance III and prepares students for advanced repertory. Classroom study supplemented by selected readings, critical reviews, and written assignments. Students will be assigned and critiqued on various oral presentations throughout the semester.

Dance, Repertory - Instructor: Cameron

Participation in two weeks by faculty, advanced students, guest artist, or major choreographers. Students participate in the reconstruction of a previously choreographed work or contribute to the creation of a new work. Prerequisite: Permission of instructor.

Dance, Social, Beginning - Instructor: Christopher Witt

This fun course introduces you to the fundamentals of partner dancing. You will learn basic patterns in several popular social dances such as Swing, Tango, Waltz, Cha-Cha and salsa. By learning a few steps in a variety of dances you will be able to hold your own on the dance floor after one short semester. PE credit is available for this course which meets twice a week. Fee.

 

Dance, Social, Intermediate - Instructor: Christopher Witt

Take your social dancing to the next level. Learn more advanced dances, such as the popular West Coast Swing, and learn more steps for the dance taught in the beginning class. This class is structured similarly to the beginning class and lets you become an accomplished dancer. Fee.

Fencing, Beg. - Instructor: George Clovis

Foil, epee, sabré movements, actions, techniques, tactics and practical fencing; rules and directing. Fee.

Fencing, Saber: - Instructor: George Clovis

Saber fencing students will study the only "cutting" sword used in modern European based fencing. Many people say that saber allows a greater sense of freedom than do foil and epee fencing. This is the swashbuckling weapon and yet it is a relatively gentle martial art. Prior fencing experience not required. Fee.

Fitness, Advanced Conditioning - Instructor: Roger Caron

This particular section is for serious trainers who want to concentrate on the development of the physique through a strenuous strength and plyometric program. We will learn specific exercises designed to develop explosive muscle mass and definition. There will also be two lectures to address the nutrition and supplement aspects of strength training.

Fitness, Jogging/Running - Instructor: Kirk Reynolds

This course will teach the basics of running with an emphasis on learning to train and run wisely. The overall goal is to teach you how to incorporate running as part of your overall fitness and health regimen. You will learn how to gradually build your endurance, and strength training, stretching, and injury prevention will also be covered.

Fitness, Strength Fitness, Adv. - Instructor: Roger Caron

Students will learn how to use the equipment in the fitness center. Individual program based on students= needs will be generated and provide the basis of the students= workouts.

Fitness Education, Weight Training – Instructor: Jason Lowery

This course will introduce students to various aspects of weight training including program design, lab exercises, and weight training’s contribution (along with flexibility, nutrition, and cardiovascular work) to overall fitness.

Acquaint each participant to the rules and regulations of the fitness center as related to appropriate dress, procedure and conduct. Instructors will provide individual programs regarding stretch exercise to increase flexibility, cardio-vascular development and resistive exercise to develop and or increase strength.

Fitness Education, Weight Training - Advanced - Instructor: Roger Caron

Strength fitness is for all ages, shapes and sizes. The strength fitness in this class is directed at the middle of the roader. A person who can spend 30 minutes two or three times per week having a desire to remain firm and Atoned.@ The student will learn the specifics of a good strength fitness program and through the use of various weight training programs using machine and free weights. After an initial aerobic circuit program to establish a fitness base, the primary focus shifts to body sculpting as opposed to body building.

Designed for the beginning student with little or no experience. Class includes stroke analysis and an introduction to rules and strategies. Fee.

Golf, Beg. / Int. - Instructor: Staff / Pat Mulcahy

Designed for the beginning student with little or no experience and a student with some golf background. Class will include stroke analysis, and an introduction to rules and strategies. Videos and video taping will be used as part of the instruction. The course will consist of both practice hitting and playing at the Claremont Golf Course. Fee.

Horseback Riding - Instructor: Candice Pipkin Off Campus 626-334-9480

Weight limit 185 lbs.

Ten week program in the instruction of Hunt Seat Equitation (English saddle) groups are formed based on ability (previous riding experience, if any) and divided into three categories, beginner, and intermediate and advanced. Fee.

Martial Arts, Shotokan Karate, Beg/Int/Adv. - Instructor: Ty Aponte

This martial art is a blend of traditional Japanese disciplines. Systematic training will increase your level of fitness through flexibility and conditioning exercises. Advancement will develop confidence, co-ordination, and self defense skills, with an emphasis on the philosophical aspects of the art. Individual growth is maximized by an increased self awareness, mental and physical skill development. Fee.

Martial Arts, Tai Chi Ch=uan, Beg/Int. - Instructor: Mark Wallace

Tai Chi Ch=aun is a centuries-old Chinese discipline encompassing practical self-defense methods against single or multiple attackers. While studying the practical arts of restraining, blocking and striking, students will learn the philosophical aspects of martial awareness and responsibility. Fee.

Pickleball: - Instructor: Lisa Beckett

Pickleball has the combined features of badminton, tennis and table tennis. The rallies are fun, exciting and can last several minutes. It is easy to learn and you can get a great workout, even as a beginner. It requires much less athletic skill than tennis, and beginner rallies are much longer. Basic instruction will be given on grips, strokes, spins, strategies, and rules. Even with the many strokes and strategies to learn, the student can actually play the game of the first day of class. The class format will include skill progressions, drills, free play and competition.

Pilates – Mat Essentials – Instructor: Eli Koenn-Bollinger

The mat exercises combine a balance of exercises from a seated, prone (lying on your stomach), supine (lying on your back), or a side-lying position. This "balance" incorporates movements of flexion (forward and lateral), extension, and rotation of the spine.

Pilates Method, Beg – Instructor: Valerie Cowan

You will learn a combo of stretching, strengthening, and mind-body exercises. This is a low-impact workout that improves core strength, balance and stabilization as well as flexibility and posture.

Pilates Method, Int. – Instructor: Valerie Cowan

A combination of stretching, strengthening and mind/body exercises. A low-impact workout that improves core strength, balance and stabilization as well as flexibility and posture. This class incorporates more difficult exercises for those with improved core strength. Beginning Pilates Method is required before taking this course.

Racquetball, Beg. - Instructor: Charlie Katsiaficas / Roger Caron

Will cover the basic fundamental and strategies needed to enjoy racquetball at a recreational level. No prior racquetball experience is necessary. Depending on the class, we may also introduce squash during the semester.

Racquetball, Beg. – Instructor: : Frank Pericolosi

Students will become familiar with the fundamentals and strategies of racquetball, so that they may enjoy the game at a recreation level. The student will put to use these fundamentals and strategies through play with other students. No prior experience in racquetball is necessary.

Will cover the basic fundamental and strategies needed to enjoy racquetball at a recreational level. No prior racquetball experience is necessary. Depending on the class, we may also introduce squash during the semester.

Racquetball, Int/Adv - Instructor: Bill Swartz

This course provides a review of the basic strokes in racquetball and will provide instruction to develop better control, speed and accuracy of the strokes. An added emphasis will be on competitive 1 on 1 and doubles play.

Selected Topics in Physical Education: - Instructor: Staff

Independent reading and research under the guidance and counsel of a faculty member. Students select an area of study and present papers and evidence of research appropriate to the project. Individual discussions and papers. Permission of department screening committee required. Course or half-course each semester.

Soccer, Beg. - Instructor: Bill Swartz

Basic skills will be taught such as dribbling passing, shooting in a game environment. Emphasis will be on the basic triangle in a 3 on 3 format.

Squash, Rackets, Beg. - Instructor: Bill Swartz / Jason Lowery / Ann Lebedeff

This course will emphasize the basic techniques of squash. This includes forehand, backhand volley and serve. The rules and their applications will also be taught. Squash rackets is the most demanding of 4-wall court games. It has parallels to all the other racket sports and has particular skill transfer benefits to those students who aspire to quality tennis play. Instruction is modified to the performance level of the class participants. The class size is limited to 6 due to the number of courts available.

Intermediate squash players will perfect their ground strokes, volleys and serves in a competitive and fun environment.

 

Swimming, Beg. Instructor: Gary Troyer

Beginning swimming is designed for non-swimmers and weak swimmers with limited experience in the water. Students will become water safe. Skills to be taught include: floats, treading water, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, freestyle, backstroke and entries.

Swimming, Beg. Instructor: Penny Lee Dean

Beginning swimming is designed for non-swimmers with no experience in the water. Students will become water safe. Skills to be taught include: floats, treading water, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, freestyle, backstroke and entries.

Swimming, Advanced Beginning - Instructor: Penny Lee Dean

This is designed for swimmers with limited experience in the water. Students will be taught free, backstroke, breaststroke, fly, sidestroke, turns and entries.

Swimming, Int. - Instructor: Gary Troyer/Penny Lee Dean

The intermediates will work on stroke mechanics for free, breaststroke and sidestroke. In addition, backstroke, turns, entries and butterfly will be taught.

Swimming, Advanced - Instructor: Penny Lee Dean

This class will work on stroke mechanics for free, backstroke, fly, breastroke, sidestroke and turns. The advanced swimmers will be given swim workouts and stroke mechanics adjustment if necessary.

Swim Fitness - Instructor: Staff

This class will work on stroke mechanics for free, breaststroke and sidestroke. In addition, backstroke, turns, entries and butterfly will be taught. The advanced swimmers will be given swim workouts and stroke mechanics adjustment if necessary.

Lifeguard Training - Instructor: Staff

Lifeguard Training is an American Red Cross course in lifeguard skill, pool operation and aquatic safety. Course completion includes CPR and Basic First Aid Cards. Swim test required for enrollment.

Water Safety-Instruction Training - Instructor: Staff

WSI is an American Red Cross course in teaching methods and aquatic safety. Successful completion leads to certification as a Red Cross Swimming Instructor. Pre-requisites include intermediate or better swim skills.

Table Tennis, Beg. - Instructor: Lisa Beckett / Valerie Cowan

This class is designed for students with little or no table tennis experience. Skill areas to be covered include the grip, ready position, footwork, timing, forehand push, backhand push, forehand chop, backhand chop, forehand topspin, backhand topspin, forehand loop, backhand loop, forehand block, backhand block, forehand smash, backhand smash, and serves (sidespin, topspin, chop).

 

Table Tennis, Int. - Instructor: Staff

This class will cover techniques and fundamentals of competitive table tennis such as grip styles, footwork and forehand and backhand strokes. Knowledge of equipment, rules and regulations as well as various offensive and defensive strategies will also be covered.

For students with no previous experience or for students not qualified for intermediate level tennis. An exposure to stretching and conditioning. Also basic racket grips and basic stance. Forehand and backhand racket preparation (pivots), hitting position and stroking. Included are net-volley and half-volley play, and service techniques, other facets covered are alignment responsibility, scoring, strategy, rules, court etiquette, and competition.

For students with some knowledge of basic techniques used in tennis. Major goals are to improve basic skills through drill and play situations and to increase understanding of strategy for both singles and doubles.

Tennis, Int. - Instructor: Bill Swartz

This class is for students who can rally from the baseline successfully with both forehand and backhand strokes and who can hit a serve. Major goals are to improve basic skills through drill and play situations and to increase understanding of strategy for both singles and doubles. Stretching, general fitness and conditioning are part of class activity.

Tennis, Int. - Instructor: Ann Lebedeff / Kathy Connell

This course provides a review of the basic techniques of beginning tennis (i.e. forehand, backhand serve, volley, smash, and lob), plus a review of simple singles and doubles strategies, rules and etiquette. Intermediate tennis introduces such skill techniques as the approach shot, drop shot, under spin and topspin, and more advanced singles and doubles strategies.

 

Tennis, Adv. - Instructor: Benjamin Belletto / Ann Lebedeff

This course provides a review of the basic strokes in tennis (i.e.. forehand, backhand, serve, volley, smash, lob) and will provide instruction to develop better control, speed, and accuracy of those strokes mentioned.

Trail Walking/ Hiking: - Instructor: Kathy Connell

This course will provide an opportunity for students to walk and hike in the local mountains. A basic level of fitness is strongly recommended (the ability to walk briskly for 30 minutes). Basic trail hiking safety will be covered. The class will be required to stay until 12:30 P.M on two or three occasions to allow for longer hikes. The class will vote on the dates.

Beginning Triathlon/Training – Instructor: Penny Lee Dean

This course teaches and refines swimming, biking and running. It teaches nutrition for a triathlon. The course teaches transitions from swim to bike and bike to run. Stretching and equipment needs are also covered. The course ends with an Olympic distance triathlon

Ultimate Frisbee: - Instructor: Kirk Reynolds

This class is for beginners wishing to learn the fundamentals, skills and rules of Ultimate. The class will teach basic skills of throwing deliveries (backhand, sidearm, upside down), throwing awareness (faking, timing) receiving (maneuvering, catching) and individual defense (marker, defender) through instruction, demonstration, and drills. As skills accumulate, playing experience will be incorporated.

Volleyball, Int./Adv. - Instructor: Valerie Cowan

This course provides a review of the basic skills in volleyball (i.e. passing, setting, hitting, blocking, serving). Instructional content will also include various defensive, offensive, serve receive and free ball strategies. In addition, students will have ample time to engage in game play. Varsity level experience preferred.

Wallyball – Instructor – Kirk Reynolds

The game is easy to learn. Just imagine an off-the-wall volleyball game and you’ve got the basics. Wallyball is played on a racquetball/handball court, where balls may be hit off the side walls as well as directly over the net. The ceiling is out of bounds, and so is the back wall if hit on a serve or volley. However the receiving team can hit or deflect the ball off its back wall to keep the action going.

Water Safety / Instructor Training – Staff

Water Safety Instructor is a method of teaching class which will certify students to teach the American Red Cross Classes from Infant to Basic Rescue. Intermediate swim skills are required and much of the class time will be utilized in swim theory, educational methodology and practice teaching. Textbooks and materials will cost approx. $40.00.

Yoga, Active Method – Instructor: Eli Koenn Bollinger

Yoga Active is a demystified style of yoga designed for every body. It delivers a safe, exercise science-supported, practical style of yoga that is accessible, understandable, and doable by any age and fitness level. It is a total mind-body workout that features cardiovascular conditioning, functional strength, flexibility, muscle balancing and relaxation.

Yoga, Fit Method – Instructor: Eli Koenn-Bollinger

This class is designed specifically for the fitness industry. Yoga Fit features strength, cardiovascular conditioning and flexibility components using music to enhance the experience.

Yoga, Hatha Method I - Instructor: Naomi Bendiner / Carla Jackson

An intense practice of yoga postures. Anatomy physiology and postures individually adapted to your ability. These classes are designed to suit anyone in basic good health. Fee.

Yoga, Hatha Method II – Instructor: Naomi Bendiner

Hatha Yoga II is a continuing level yoga class with focus on intermediate level postures and refinement of practice and understanding. Hatha Yoga I or previous experience recommended.

Yoga, Kundalini - Instructor: Gurucharan Khalsa

Each class session will include Yoga Postures, breathing techniques, a period of deep relaxation and meditation. You will explore ways in which yoga and meditation can improve your overall health and well being and also gain an understanding of the basic philosophy of yoga. If you are interested in learning to relax, become more flexible, manage stress, and achieve a great peace of mind this is the perfect class for you.
