Men's Basketball

Overall: 5-1   SCIAC: 0-0

Edward Wexler-Beron scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Sagehens defeated Willamette University 68-55 to advance to the finals of the Lee Fulmer Invitational Basketball Tournament. The Hens bounced back from a four-point halftime deficit on the strength of their rebounding and defense; they held a 49-29 rebounding edge, and kept Willamette to under 40% shooting for the game. After shooting 8-14 (57%) from three-point range in the first half, the Bearcats were only 2-10 in the second half. On Saturday the Sagehens face a Redlands team that has yet to score less than 100 points in any contest this year and is coming off of a 154-153 triple-overtime win against Chapman; the Bulldogs scored 61 points in the first half alone on Friday. Tip-off is at 8 pm at Redlands.

The Men's Basketball team turned back Southwestern College on Thursday night in the opening round of the Lee Fulmer Basketball Tournament, 86-50. The Sagehens shot 50% from the field and 62% from three-point range on the night, holding their opponents under 30% from the field. Mark Erler scored a game-high 13 points and was a perfect three for three from beyond the arc; he also added five assists, a block, and a steal in 20 minutes. Tyler Velten added 11 points, six rebounds, and a block. Right from the start the Hens were in control, jumping out to a 49-23 halftime lead. Pomona-Pitzer moves into the semi-finals where they face Willamette at 6 pm on Friday.

Making up for poor free-throw shooting the night before, the Hens went 25 for 33 from the charity stripe (75.8%) on a night when Pomona-Pitzer overcame a poor-shooting first half and defeated the US Merchant Marine Academy 84-65. Chaz Turner and Terrance Norman-Kamau each scored 13 to lead a balanced Sagehen attack. David Knowles added 12 points and Thomas Hollo chipped in 10 on a night when Pomona-Pitzer shot 60% in the second half and were 5 of 10 from beyond the arc.

It took Hamilton College two overtimes to beat the Sagehens, but eventually they came away with a 75-71 victory in the opening round of the David Wells Classic. The Hen's were able to stay in the game despite shooting just 16.7 % from the free throw line, managing only six attempts for the game, including two overtime periods. Hamilton's Joe Smith (not to be confused with Joe Smith of the Milwaukee Bucks) did his best Joe Smith (of the Milwaukee Bucks) impression with 25 points on 8-16 shooting; he also went 9-11 from the line. The Sagehens were led by Edward Wexler-Beron with 18 points on 9-15 shooting and nine rebounds. David Knowles added 13 points on three three-pointers.

The Men's Basketball team tipped off the 2003-2004 season with a thrilling 78-73 home victory over Vanguard University on Friday night.  A festive home crowd watched as Senior Mark Erler scored 14 points on 6 of 12 shooting, including two 3 pointers to lead a balanced Sagehen attack. Kamau Norman-Terrence scored 13 and grabbed 5 boards, Edward Wexler-Beron added 11 points as part of an offense that featured four scorers in double-digits. With the game hanging in the balance, Alexander Lloyd brought the crowd to its feet with a thunderous dunk off of an inbounds play to solidify the victory. On Tuesday the Sagehens visit La Sierra for a 7:30 pm tip-off.

Women's Basketball

Overall: 1-4   SCIAC: 0-0

Whitworth College ran away with a 94-74 win over the Sagehens on Saturday. Whitworth was paced by Tiffany Speer with 39 points (6-9 from 3-point range), and Sharah Shogren with 22 points. The Hens were led by Caroline Crocker's 23 points and eight boards, and Lindsay Hill's 18 points and four assists. Whitworth maintained an up tempo game from start to finish and shot 50% (35-69) from the field to put the pressure on the Sagehens, who in the end just didn't have enough. On Tuesday the Hens travel to Biola for a 7:00 pm game.

Holding Chapman to under 80 points was a modest accomplishment considering that it was the only time this year that it has happened. Unfortunately, it was not enough to pull out a victory, and the Panthers came away with a 74-52 victory on Tuesday night. Chapman's Caroline Jensen proved too much for the Hens, scoring 26 points on 12-16 shooting, and adding 18 rebounds. Caroline Crocker had 12 points and 11 boards for the Hens, Alana Casner scored 15, and Lindsay Hill added 14 points and 6 rebounds. The difference in the game was turnovers; the Hens turned the ball over 26 times compared to the Panther's 13.  Chapman also held the rebounding edge, 48-43. The Women return home on Saturday to face Whitworth College at 7:30 pm; come make some noise for your Sagehens.

It wasn't pretty, but it did the trick. The Sagehens pulled out a foul-plagued second-round game against Lewis & Clark 62-58. Alana Casner led three Hens in double figures with 12; she also added 7 rebounds. Caroline Crocker tallied a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards and Cynthia Ting added 11 points in a game that featured 63 personal fouls and 85 free throws.

Willamette University proved too strong on opening night of the David Wells Classic on Friday night, pulling out a 66-55 victory over Pomona-Pitzer College. Lindsay Hill scored 15 points and 13 rebounds and Alexandra Schaible added 11 points and 11 rebounds in the losing effort. Unfortunately, Hill also committed 9 turnovers on a night when the Hens turned the ball over 24 times.

The Sagehen's shot just 36% from the field on Saturday, opening up the 2003-2004 season with a 95-50 loss to California Baptist University. The Lancers were in control from the start, jumping out to a 23-7 lead early in the game and using runs of 18, 19, and 20 points to pad the gap. Freshman guard Alana Casner scored 14 points and had 6 steals, and Caroline Crocker added 12 points and 6 rebounds in the losing effort. The Hen's return home on Friday to host the David Wells Classic.
