Men's Swimming and Diving

The Hen’s Men Swim Team enjoyed a great weekend of swim
competition at the Championship Meet in the Cerritos Aquatic Center. They
finished a distant third behind Redlands and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and
comfortably ahead of LaVerne and Occidental. “The plan really came together for
the whole team. Every one moved ahead of their seed times and all but a few of
the finals swims were faster than the prelim heat efforts. The amazing thing
for me was that 28 of the 33 individual swims were lifetime best efforts. The
high percentage of personal best marks represented the strength of the seasons’
training effort and the intensity of the 11 man team. I am very pleased with
the out come,” coach Gary Troyer said.
The top performer was Ben
Demarchelier who placed third in all three of his individual events and played a
major role in three third place relay teams. Ben’s 50 free time equaled the
NCAA qualifying time of 21:39. Freshmen Art Maier, Ben Cooper and Nick Douglas
placed in the top level of the conference in relays and individual events.
Distance swimmer Tim Brown, cut 50 seconds off his entry time in the mile (1650)
to place 6th and PC Fleming made the finals in both the 200 fly and
the 400 individual medley. The dual meet record for the Sagehens was 7–3 overall
and 5-2 in the SCIAC.
Pomona-Pitzer won six freestyle events, the diving events,
the Individual Medley and the backstroke to defeat La Verne on Saturday 147-74.
Ben Cooper won the 50 and 100 yard sprints, Ben Demarchelier won the 200 and 500
middle distance events, Matt Clark took both boards in the diving portion and
Tim Brown notched his first collegiate victory in the 1650. Frosh Flyer, Nick
Douglas, won the 200 yard Individual Medley improving his season best time by
more than three seconds. Art Maier also improved his best time in his victory
in the 200 Backstroke. “Our conference meet is coming up in two weeks and the
times will drop again with some extra rest and some speed work. The La Verne
meet times were an indication that we will have some nice swims at the end of
the season”
