Baseball

Overall: 5-10     SCIAC: 2-6

Pomona-Pitzer could not hold onto a 7-1 lead, and eventually fell to visiting Cal Lutheran 12-7 in the first game of a double-header on Saturday.Alex Cushman and Sam Whitehead each had two RBI's, and Alex Perkins pitched 6 and 2/3 innings, striking out 4 and giving up 6 runs. In the second game, Cal Lutheran broke open a scoreless game in the top of the 5th inning, and then scored 2 more runs in the 7th inning to hold for a 4-2 victory over the Sagehens. The Hens scored their 2 runs in the bottom of the 6th off of the bat of Felipe Aguilar. Michael Joannides pitched 6 and a third innings, giving up 4 runs and scattering 6 hits.

The Sagehen's stopped a two-game losing streak by defeating Whittier College 16-3 at home on Sunday. Jase Turner went 5 for 6 with 9 RBI's including a 3 run home run. Sam Whitehead pitched 5 innings and did not allow a run while striking out 5 and walking only 1.

Ben Shanker went 4 for 4 at the plate with 2 RBI's, and Jase Turner went 3 for 4 with 2 RBI's as the Sagehens defeated the University of La Verne 9-5. Giving starting pitcher Kyle Buika a five run cushion early, he went 4 2/3 innings including three scoreless innings. Natty Miller came on in relief and pitched 4 1/3 innings without allowing a run.

The second time around proved much more competitive, as the Sagehens lost a close game to Chapman University, 5-4 on Thursday. Kyle Buika pitched six strong innings, striking out five, and giving up three runs. Alex Cushman went 2 for 4 with an RBI, and Ben Shanker went 2 for 3 with one run scored. The game was decided in the bottom of the eighth, when Chapman's Tyler Dean led off the inning with a game-tying home run, and then leftfielder CJ Castillo hit a two-out triple to put the Panthers up for good.

Despite four strong innings from freshman Michael Joannides, including four strikeouts, the Sagehens fell to visiting Chapman 19-6. The Hens gave up nine runs in the seventh inning, and six in the eighth to put the game out of reach. Catcher Felipe Aguilar went 3 for 4, and right fielder Alex Cushman went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI's.


Softball

Overall: 0-7     SCIAC: 0-5

Runs are not coming easily early in the season for the Sagehens, as they dropped two games at home to La Verne on Saturday.

The softball team could only manage 2 total runs during their series against Cal Lutheran. In the first game of their double-header  with Cal Lutheran on Saturday, the Sagehens fell 7-1. Leanne Stein went 2 for 2 with 1 RBI, and Catie Camacho went 1 for 3. In the second game, the Hens fell 20-1. Pitcher Erin Kahle gave up 7 runs (6 earned) in the first inning, as the Regals of Cal Lutheran posted 10 runs in the inning. At the plate, Kahle fared better, going 1 for 2. Kindra Wilson went 2 for 3, and Katie Mathews went 1 for 2 with an RBI.

In the conference opener, the Sagehens gave up 12 runs, all unearned before the game was called after five innings, losing to Cal Lutheran 12-0. Terra Bennett and Katie Mathews recorded the only two hits for the Hens, who look for revenge on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 pm.


Men's Tennis

Overall: 3-6     SCIAC: 2-2

The Sagehens fell to the University of the South (Sewanee) on Thursday, 6-1. Freshmen Blake Phillips and Drew Olian were victorious at number two doubles, 8-3, but the Hens were unable to secure the doubles point after losing at the numbers one and three positions. In singles, junior JB Wogan won 6-4, 6-1, the lone Hen to win in singles. On Saturday, the Sagehens return to action against Washington University at 12 pm.

Despite losing the top two singles positions, the Sagehens defeated La Verne 5-2. Pomona-Pitzer only surrendered four total games in the three thru six positions, with Blake Phillips winning at three singles 6-1, 6-0. At four singles, Neil Patel was victorious 6-0, 6-1, and Don Richards and JB Wogan both cruised to 6-1, 6-0 wins. In doubles, the Hens dominated all three matches, losing only one game at number three doubles.

Taking on the eighth ranked Eagles of Mary Washington University, the men's tennis team jumped out of the gates and took two of three doubles matches to secure the doubles point and enter the singles portion of the match up 1-0. The Eagles rallied however and won 5 out of 6 matches to win 5-2. In doubles, sophomores Neil Patel and Don Richards were victorious at the number two spot 8-3. Freshmen Blake Phillips and Drew Olian secured the doubles point with an 8-5 win. In singles, Don Richards was the lone victorious Hen. On Wednesday, the men's team will host La Verne at 2:00 pm.

Winning two out of three doubles matches, the Sagehens entered the singles portion of the match up 1-0 versus Green Mountain College, and battled to a 6-1 win. Jeff Jablonski was victorious at number one singles, and Nate Pealer won in straight sets at number 2 singles. At the three spot, freshman Blake Phillips pulled out a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 win. At number five singles, Don Richards won 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. Ben Kaufman cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win at number six singles.

The Sagehens notched their first win of the season, defeating Caltech 6-1 on Saturday. The team swept the doubles, and earned straight set victories at the numbers 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6 positions. On Thursday, the Sagehens host Green Mountain College at 2:00 pm.

Playing their second match in as many days, the men's tennis team was defeated by Chapman University 7-0 on Friday. The number one doubles team of Jeff Jablonksi and Neil Patel fell in a tight doubles match, 9-8 (7-2). At number three singles Patel won the first set 6-2, but then fell 7-6 (7-2) in the third set. On Saturday, the Sagehens travel to Caltech in search of their first win.

The men's tennis team couldn't overcome a slow start, and lost to Cal Lutheran 7-0 on Thursday in a match rescheduled due to rain.

The Saghens were swept in doubles, and could not recover, falling 4-3 to the Occidental College Tigers on Saturday. Sophomore Jeff Jablonski was victorious at number one singles, and freshman Blake Phillips pulled out a 6-2, 7-6 (7) win at number three singles. At number five singles, sophomore Neil Patel won 6-3, 6-3.

The men's tennis team opened up the 2005 season with a 5-4 loss to Westmont College on Saturday. Using the nine point format employed by the NAIA, instead of the seven point format, the Hens won at number two doubles, and numbers one, five, and six singles. Sophomore's Neil Patel and Don Richards emerged with an 8-6 victory at two doubles. At the number one singles spot, sophomore Jeff Jablonski defeated Burke Marold 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. Freshman Blake Phillips rallied from one set down to defeat JB Shiller 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 10-6 (super tiebreaker). At number six singles, Patel was victorious after his opponent retired at 3-6, 6-3. On Saturday, the Sagehens host Occidental College at 9:30 am. 


Women's Tennis

Overall: 1-4     SCIAC: 1-2

The women's tennis team suffered an 8-1 defeat at the hands of host Occidental College on Saturday in a match rescheduled because of the rain. On Tuesday, the Hens are back in action as they host Swarthmore College at 4:00 pm.

The Sagehens evened their record at 1-1 after a 9-0 win over visiting Caltech on Saturday.

The women's tennis team fell to Cal Lutheran 8-1 on Friday. On Saturday they host Caltech at 9:30 am.


Women's Track & Field

Overall: 0-0     SCIAC: 0-0

In a tune-up to the SCIAC Multi-Dual meet this coming Friday, Pomona-Pitzer's women's track & field team came away with some strong marks at the Pomona-Pitzer Potluck Meet at home on Strehle Track Saturday, March 5. The meet -- a late add to the schedule after an earlier rain-out in late February -- featured seven NCAA Division III and NAIA teams.

Karen Ring won the 400m in 62.18 and Amy Rapp won the 1500m in 5:02.51, while Izzy Smith won the 400m hurdles in 67.52 for the only Sagehen wins on the day.

The Sagehens meet all seven other SCIAC schools Friday at Claremont-M-S in the annual Multi-Dual meet, where each institution will score in a dual meet format against each of the conference schools.

Pomona-Pitzer's women's track team opened the season at Saturday's Cal Poly Pomona Bronco Invite. The Sagehens, glad to begin competing after having Feb. 19's home all-comers rained out, performed well against Cal Poly Pomona, CSU Dominguez Hills and a club team of strong sprinters.

Individually, frosh Emily Bockmon threw the hammer 93'7" in her first attempt at the event to record the #10 all-time mark for Pomona-Pitzer.
Bockmon finished fourth overall in the meet. Frosh Elaine McGlaughlin pole vaulted 7'6" to record the #6 all-time mark for Pomona-Pitzer. She finished second in the meet.

The Sagehens are preparing for the first SCIAC competition on Friday, March
11 at Claremont-M-S.


Men's Track & Field

Adam Henry won the 400m in 50.76, Rich Cannon won the 800m inn 1:57.82, and Will Leer won the 1500m in 4:04.8. On the field, Ty Bundgaard won the high jump at 6'5", Pat Hirsch won the pole vault at 12'6", Ari Polychronopoulos won the hammer at 162'9", while Alex Head won the javelin at 175'11".

The Sagehens meet all seven other SCIAC schools Saturday at La Verne in the annual Multi-Dual meet, where each institution will score in a dual meet format against each of the conference schools.
