Overall: 0-16
SCIAC: 0-5
The Sagehens gave up 10 runs in the first inning and were
never able to recover as they fell to Pacific University
10-0 on Sunday. Katie Mathews went 3 for 3 with a double,
and Monica Belli pitched two perfect innings and went 1 for
1 from the plate. Jameela Hammond pitched the first two
innings giving up 10 runs (3 earned) off of 4 hits and 4
walks; she struck out 2.
Pacific University came away with a 9-3 win over the
Sagehens in the forst game of a double-header on Sunday.
Traci Kutaka went 1 for 3 with an RBI and pitched 3 innings,
giving up 1 earned run and striking out 1. Glenna Holstein
went 2 for 3 at the plate and Monica Belli pitched 4
innings, giving up 4 hits, walking 6, and not allowing an
earned run.
Traci Kutaka went 2 for 4 with an RBI and pitched two
scoreless innings, and Courtney Buchanan went 2 for 3, but
visiting Lewis and Clark College prevailed with a 9-1
victory on Saturday.
The second inning proved a disastrous one, as Linfield
College defeated the Sagehen's 24-0. Erin Kahle, Rosa
Jimenez, and Katie Mathews had the only hits on the day, and
each were in separate innings. Monica Belli pitched one and
a third innings, giving up five hits on five runs, before
being replaced by Courtney Buchanan. Buchanan pitched two
and two-thirds of an inning, giving up 19 runs (12 earned)
on 17 hits. On Saturday, the Hen's host Lewis and Clark at 2
pm.
Baseball
Overall: 10-15 SCIAC: 4-5
The Sagehen's split a double-header with Rutgers-Newark on
Saturday, winning the first game, 5-4 and losing the second
game 11-5. In the first game, Matt Williams went 2 for 3
including a homerun, and Felipe Aguilar went 1 for 4 with a
two run shot. Josh Cardwell and Kevin Cook combined to
strike out six in nine innings; Cook pitched the final four
innings of one-hit ball for the win. In the second game,
Rutgers-Newark scored seven runs in the bottom of the eighth
to come from behind for the win. Jeff Lamb gave up five
earned runs in seven and a third innings before being
replaced by Alex George, who allowed three in one-third of
an inning.
In the second game of the afternoon, Eastern Connecticut
jumped all over the Sagehen's evoking the mercy rule, 11-0.
Senior Adam Gardner gave up eight runs (four earned), for
the loss. Junior Sam Whitehead was the lone bright spot on
offense, going 2 for 2 including a double. The Sagehen's
managed only four hits on the afternoon, and committed five
errors, three by Whitehead. On Saturday, the Hen's play
Rutgers-Newark in a double-header beginning at 8:30 am.
Menlo College was able to avenge an earlier 25-1 Sagehen
victory, with a 8-7 win on Friday. Menlo scored twice in the
bottom of the ninth to come from behind for the win, Natty
Miller pitched one and two-thirds of an inning, giving up
two runs (one earned) on three hits. Clay Leonard and Alex
Cushman each went 3 for 4 with an RBI and two runs.
Men's Tennis
Overall: 2-4 SCIAC: 1-3
Number four ranked Middlebury College walked away with a 6-1
victory over Pomona-Pitzer on Sunday. The doubles team of
Frankel and Hall returned to their winning ways at one
doubles, winning 8-3. In singles, Dave Frankel was the only
victorious Hen, with a 6-7 (7-4), 6-3, (10-5) win. JR Hall
lost a close match at number two singles, 6-4, 4-6, (10-8).
On Tuesday the Sagehen's host Salisbury University, led by
former Pomona-Pitzer coach Randy Halfpap; the match starts
at 2:30 pm
Whitman College won all three doubles matches and split the
singles as the Sagehens suffered a 4-3 defeat on Saturday.
In singles Dave Frankel, JR Hall and Erin Noble were all
victorious
The Sagehens swept all three doubles matches and then played
six three-set matches before succumbing to the number seven
ranked Washington University Bears, 5-2 on Friday. In a
match that lasted almost six hours, the Sagehens took the
Bears to the brink, winning at number three singles with
Jeff Jablonski, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. By sweeping the doubles,
Pomona-Pitzer has won three straight doubles points against
ranked teams.
For their second match in two days, the Sagehens took on #23
ranked Rochester University and came away with a 4-3 win.
The doubles team of Frankel/ Hall came away with an 8-6 win,
and the number two team of Jablonski/ Pealer pulled out an
8-6 win to give the Hen's the doubles point and a 1-0 match
advantage going into singles. Freshman Erin Noble was
rock-solid at number six, winning 6-4, 6-2. JR Hall capped
an undefeated afternoon with a 7-5, 6-3 win, and Dave
Frankel pulled out a gutsy 3-set win, 6-7 (3), 7-5, 6-3.
The Sagehens jumped out to an early lead against #5 ranked
UC Santa Cruz by winning the doubles point, and then were
overpowered by the Slugs, losing 5-2. David Frankel and JR
Hall won at #1 doubles, 8-4, and Jeff Jablonski and Nate
Pealer came from being down 0-4 to win 9-8 (8-6), at #2
doubles. In singles, JR Hall beat Matt Seeberger 6-4, 6-2
for the only Sagehen singles win. This was only the second
time in school history that Pomona-Pitzer has won the
doubles point against Santa Cruz. In 1992, the number four
ranked Hen's won two out of three doubles matches against
the then number two ranked Slugs.
Women's Tennis
Overall: 4-15 SCIAC:
3-1
Spring break came at just the right time, as the Sagehen's
dropped three in a row, to Hardin Simmons 5-4, Washington
University 5-4, and Amherst 9-0. Kelli Howard had a strong
week at number one singles, defeating Rebecca Watkins of
Hardin-Simmons, 6-3, 6-2; and then taking down Kacie Cook of
Washington University, 6-3, 6-1. Whitney Henderson also had
a strong showing, going 2-1 on the week.
The Hen's fell to reigning National Champion Emory on
Tuesday 8-1. The lone victory came from Brittany Biebl and
Lauren Calton at number three doubles, 8-5. In singles,
Kelli Howard fell to Mary Ellen Gordon 7-6, 6-3. Betsy Mork
lost 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 at number two singles, and Whitney
Henderson was edged at three singles, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6. On
Friday the Hen's take on Hardin-Simmons at 2:00 pm.
Golf
Overall: 4-1 SCIAC: 4-1
Dylan Pelletier-Ross, Ben Hochstein, and Scott Pearsall all
fired 81s to help the Saghens edge Whittier, 328 to 346 at
Red Hill Country Club on March 8th. Evan Hall, playing as an
individual, was low for Pomona-Pitzer with an 80. His score
could not count toward the team score unfortunately. The
team now looks toward The Saghen Invitational at Goose Creek
Golf Course on Monday March 15th, which will include all the
top SCIAC teams.
Women's Track & Field
Overall: 4-3 SCIAC: 4-3
The Hens competed in the SCIAC Multi-Dual meet this
Saturday, March 6 at Whittier College. The competition
involved all of the SCIAC schools (Redlands, La Verne,
Whittier, Cal Lutheran, Occidental, Cal Tech and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps).
The Hens left the Muti-Dual meet in the fourth place
position. Although the Hens beat Whittier, Cal-Tech,
Redlands and Cal Lutheran they lost to CMS, La Verne, and
Occidental College (by only ten points).
This week’s stellar athlete is Elizabeth “Izzy” Smith. She
did a great job of stretching herself in four events. Izzy
ran, and won, the 400 hurdles (67.01), the 400m (2nd place,
62.02), high jumped (4’ 6”) and anchored the 4x400m relay
(Lilly Holmes, Shannon Wolff, Stefanie McDougall, Izzy Smith
4:14.81)
Other Hen highlights include Anna Bruett’s discus
(108’1”) and hammer (130’8”) throws, Rebecca Farrell’s
discus (72’8”), Allison Bailey’s hammer (87’5”) as well as
Erin Kiskis’ hammer (79’1”), Lilly Holmes’ 400m (64.87),
Karen Ring’s 1500m (5:26.62), Nika Strzelecka’s 5000m
(19:28.49), Kenisha Dillard’s 100m hurdle (18.01) and 400m
intermediate hurdle (74.15) times, and the 4 x 100m team (Kenisha
Dillard, Laura Kerber, Lilly Holmes, Lindsay Ludwick) time
improvement (54.39).
Next week the Hens will either be participating in the
Ben Brown Invitational at Cal State Fullerton on Friday,
March 12 (for hammer throwers only) and Saturday, March 13
or they will be at the Occidental Distance Carnival on
Friday, March 19 and the Occidental Invitational on

Pomona-Pitzer women’s track and field continued their season
by competing in the Cal Poly Pomona Bronco Invitational on
Saturday, February 28, 2004. Once again the senior captains
are at the top of the Hen highlights. Beginning with Anna
Bruett’s mark of 123’ 10” in the hammer is an improvement
from last weeks throw; as well as a #6 on the Pomona-Pitzer
all time list. Another Hen senior captain Stephanie
McDougall, coming off on a chronic injury, was able to run a
4:39.17. The time is a number three on the P-P all-time list
and a national “B” mark. Unfortunately, the marks cannot be
counted until March 1. Senior captain Lilly Holmes also had
major accomplishments this week; she improved her times in
the 400m (from 66.0 to 65.12) and 200m (from 33.0 to 29.6).
Other notable performances include Allison Bailey’s throw in
the hammer (74’7”) and in the Shot Put (28’ 11 ¼”), Laura
Kerber’s opening long jump (14’11 ½”), Izzy Smith’s 400 LH
(69.39), Ellen Smith’s 100 hurdles (18.39), Lindsay
Ludwick’s 200m (28.39), Molly Unruh’s 5000 (21:34.0), and
the Hen 4 x 100 Relay team’s (Kenisha Dillard, Kerber,
Holmes, Lindsay Ludwick) 55.05 run. This Saturday the Hen's
will compete in a Multi-Duals track meet with seven other
SCIAC schools at Whittier College. Field events commence at
10:00 am, with running events beginning at 12:20.
Men's Track & Field
Overall: 5-2 SCIAC: 5-2
Four straight days of Sagehen track competition led to a
number of outstanding performances. Mark Melief improved 400
points in the decathlon at Northridge, garnering 5400
points. On Friday night at the Occidental Distance Carnival,
Will Leer ran a 3:59 pr for 1500 and David Maas ran a
4:00.34 pr; David Marshall ran a pr 16:05 in the 5000. On
Saturday, Matt Johnson won the hammer with a toss of 143 and
finished second in the discus with a pr throw of 140’6. Will
Leer doubled back from Friday night to win the 800 with a
seasonal pr 1:56.9 and anchored our relay to a win with a
seasonal best 3:24.5. David Buxton ran a college pr 50.6 to
win the 400 and ran a 49.5 relay leg; Ty Bundgaard won the
high jump with a leap of 6’6 and barely missed 6’8. Next up
is the UCSD Spring Classic on Saturday.
Will Leer’s double win in the 1500 and 800 and Ty
Bundgaard’s win in the high jump and 2nd in the triple jump
and PR in the long jump lead to a solid results on Friday.
Matt Johnson threw a PR in the hammer throw. Alec Head threw
a seasonal best 176 in the javelin, returning to last year’s
form. Crosby Freeman ran a solo PR in the 5000. Against
Occidental the Hen’s went 1-2 in both hurdle races, the 400,
the high jump, steeplechase and the 1500 (David Maas
finished 2nd in the 1500 and 5th in the 800). PR’s in the
meet include Dave Smith in the long jump, Mike Bergeron in
the 5000 and1500, where he lead wire to wire in the second
heat for his first win ever, Kevin Hettrich in the javelin,
David Marshall in the 5000 and Adam Henry in the 400. During
spring break, Mark Melief and Chris Snipes will be
participating in the decathlon on Wednesday and Thursday,
and the distance carnival at Occidental on Friday; on
Saturday, they will compete in the muli-meet at Occidental.
Women’s Water Polo
Overall: 0-0 SCIAC: 0-0
The Sagehen's had a shut out for the first 19 minutes of the
game as they took a 6-0 lead over conference opponent
Occidental. A late rally by the Tigers drew them within one,
but a goal by lauren Moore at the 1:17 mark of the fourth
quarter sealed a 7-5 victory for the Hens.
The Sagehen’s opened up the 2004 Claremont Colleges Women's
Water Polo Tournament against division three rival UC Santa
Cruz. Toby Branz and Ashley Gucinski each scored twice in
the first quarter to open up a 5-2 lead. Lauren Moore scored
both of her goals in the second period as the Saghens went
into halftime with a 7-3 advantage. The Banana Slugs kept
the game even in the second half and Pomona-Pitzer got the
10-6 victory. Morgan Sokolow had 7 blocks and 5 steals in
the goal for PP.
The Women’s Water Polo team returned from spring break to
play its third east coast team in the last three games.
Lauren Moore opened up the scoring at the 6:19 mark to give
PP a 1-0 lead. Goals by Toby Branz and Blair Henderson sent
the Sagehens into the second quarter up 3-1. A poor second
quarter found the Sagehens down 5-4 going into halftime. The
team refocused on defense and out scored the Seahawks 5-1 in
the second half to walk away with a 9-6 victory. Lauren
Moore led the way for the sagehens with 3 goals, along with
Henderson, Branz, and Gucinski all scoring 2 a piece. Morgan
Sokolow recorded 8 saves in the game.
