Baseball
Overall: 7-15 SCIAC:
2-9
Allowing 10 runs on 14 hits, the Sagehens fell to the visiting Bulldogs of
Redlands on Friday 10-3. Ben Shanker went 2 for 4 with a homerun and 2 RBI's in
the loss. After allowing five run in the second inning, the Hens settled down
and kept the Bulldogs scoreless for the next three innings. Pomona-Pitzer drew
within 3 runs in the fifth inning, but could not get any closer.
The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team lost to La Verne 5-2 on Friday, in a game
shortened by rain. Senior second baseman Sam Whitehead went 2 for 3, and Natty
Miller pitched two scoreless innings for the Sagehens, who had scored the final
two runs of the game before the rain intervened.
The Sagehens pounded out 14 hits against 17th ranked the Ithaca College
Bombers en route to a 13-1 victory. Kevin Cook was 2-5 with a home run, a double
and 5 RBI's. Starting pitcher Alex Perkins pitched six solid innings for the
win. In his third solid relief performance of the weekend, freshman Warren Klein
threw three scoreless innings, struck out four and allowed only one hit.
Eighth ranked Linfield College defeated the Sagehens 13-0 in the final game of
the California Classic on Sunday. The Sagehens bats were silenced by Jordon
Rasmussen who pitched seven strong innings for Linfield, allowing only 3 hits.
Linfield’s offense was too much for the Sagehens as they amassed 14 hits
including 2 homers and 3 doubles.
The men's baseball team won the first two games of the 2005 California
Classic on Saturday. In the first game, the Sagehens defeated Rutgers-Newark
5-4. Michael Joannides pitched seven strong innings, allowing one earned run and
striking out two. Alex Cushman went 3 for 5 with a double and 2 RBI's, and
Clayton Leonard went 2 for 4 with an RBI.
In the second game, the Sagehens outscored Wesleyan 8-2 behind seven innings
of one run pitching from Kyle Buika. Buika struck out five and allowed only five
hits. Offensively, Ben Shanker went 3 for 5 with 3 RBI's including a home run.
Felipe Aguilar went 2 for 3 with 1 RBI.
Pomona-Pitzer could not hold onto a 7-1 lead, and eventually fell to visiting
Cal Lutheran 12-7 in the first game of a double-header on Saturday.Alex Cushman
and Sam Whitehead each had two RBI's, and Alex Perkins pitched 6 and 2/3
innings, striking out 4 and giving up 6 runs. In the second game, Cal Lutheran
broke open a scoreless game in the top of the 5th inning, and then scored 2 more
runs in the 7th inning to hold for a 4-2 victory over the Sagehens. The Hens
scored their 2 runs in the bottom of the 6th off of the bat of Felipe Aguilar.
Michael Joannides pitched 6 and a third innings, giving up 4 runs and scattering
6 hits.
Softball
Overall: 1-12 SCIAC:
0-5
The softball team broke a 71 game losing streak on Saturday with a 2-1
victory over visiting Blackburn College.
Billie McGrane pitched 7 innings with
no earned runs and 4 strikeouts. At the plate,
Leanne Stein went 2 for 3, and
McGrane went 1 for 2 with 2 RBI's.
The Sagehens took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning against
host Colorado College, but gave up 2 runs to lose the game, 4-3.
Billie McGrane went 2 for
3, and Kindra Wilson and
Courtney Buchanan each
had an RBI in the loss.
In the second game of a doubleheader against Colorado College, the Sagehens
gave up four runs in the first inning and could not fully recover, eventually
falling 11-2. Kindra Wilson
and Billie McGrane each
went 2 for 3.
Men's Tennis
Overall: 3-10 SCIAC:
2-2
Battling at doubles, the Sagehens fell 8-5, 9-7, 8-5 to lose the doubles
point against the number seven ranked Gusties of Gustavis Adolphus. The Hens
lost the match by the final score of 7-0, despite strong showings from senior
Nate Pealer at number three
singles (4-6, 3-6), and sophomore
Jeff Jablonski at number one
singles (3-6, 3-6). On Friday, Pomona-Pitzer moves across the street to take on
the sixth ranked Stags of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 2:00 pm.
The number one doubles team of
Nate Pealer and Jeff
Jablonski defeated Tufts 8-3, but the Sagehens fell in the match 5-2. In
singles, number one Jeff
Jablonksi was a 6-2, 6-4 winner, and number two
Neil Patel won 6-3, 6-4. On
Monday, the Hens will host division II neighbor Cal Poly Pomona at 2:00 pm.
Sophomore number one singles player
Jeff Jablonski was the lone
victorious Hen against Pacific Lutheran University of Wednesday, as
Pomona-Pitzer fell 6-1.
Jablonski was also victorious on Monday against WIlliams College in a 6-1
defeat. On Friday, the Sagehens take on Tufts University at 12:00 pm at the
Claremont Tennis Club.
Sophomores Jeff Jablonski
and Neil Patel came back from
being down a break at number one doubles to win 9-8, but the Sagehens lost the
doubles point and the match to Washington University 6-1. In singles,
Patel was victorious at number
two singles.
The Sagehens fell to the University of the South (Sewanee) on Thursday, 6-1.
Freshmen Blake Phillips and
Drew Olian were victorious at
number two doubles, 8-3, but the Hens were unable to secure the doubles point
after losing at the numbers one and three positions. In singles, junior
JB Wogan won 6-4, 6-1, the lone
Hen to win in singles. On Saturday, the Sagehens return to action against
Washington University at 12 pm.
Despite losing the top two singles positions, the Sagehens defeated La Verne
5-2. Pomona-Pitzer only surrendered four total games in the three thru six
positions, with Blake Phillips
winning at three singles 6-1, 6-0. At four singles,
Neil Patel was victorious 6-0,
6-1, and Don Richards and
JB Wogan both cruised to 6-1,
6-0 wins. In doubles, the Hens dominated all three matches, losing only one game
at number three doubles.
Women's Tennis
Overall: 1-11 SCIAC:
1-2
The women's tennis team lost five matches over the weekend, falling to
Middlebury, Trinity (TX), Rhodes, DePauw, and Hardin-Simmons. Against
Hardin-Simmons, the number one doubles team of Brittany Biebl and Jenn Wilcox
were victorious 8-6. In singles, Molly Berman won at the number one singles
position, 1-6, 6-3, 10-4, and Biebl cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win at number two
singles.
Battling a heavy misting fog, the women's tennis team was unable to complete
their match against Amherst College on Sunday. Amherst was leading 3-0 after the
doubles, but the match will not be completed and only the individual results
will stand.
The Sagehens were swept in doubles and managed only one win in singles
against the University of the South and lost 8-1.
Brittany Biebl won at number
two singles, 1-6, 6-2, 10-8.
The women's tennis team suffered an 8-1 defeat at the hands of host
Occidental College on Saturday in a match rescheduled because of the rain. On
Tuesday, the Hens are back in action as they host Swarthmore College at 4:00 pm.
Women's Track & Field

Pomona-Pitzer's women's track & field team competed well at the UC San Diego
Collegiate Open Saturday, March 26 in La Jolla. Frosh Rebecca Sedillo ran 60.31
in the 400m to finish 9th, while teammate Lindsay Ludwick ran 62.66. Junior Amy
Rapp dipped under 5:00 in the 1500m race -- her time of 4:58.44 is a season's
best. Frosh Hilary Parker ran 16.78 in the 100m hurdles as well as 75.82 in the
400m hurdles in her first attempt this season. The Sagehens travel to Occidental
to take on Oxy, La Verne and Claremont-M-S in a SCIAC friendly Saturday in Eagle
Rock.
Pomona-Pitzer's women's track and field team finished a strong 5-2 in the SCIAC
Multi-Dual team meet Friday, March 11 at Claremont-M-S. The Sagehens fell to
both undefeated La Verne and 6-1 CMS, but beat Caltech, Occidental, Redlands,
Whittier and Cal Lutheran in the dual meet scoring.
Against Occidental, the Sagehens prevailed by a single point, 96-95, in a meet
that came down to the final event.
Strong performances were turned in by sophomores
Karen Ring, who ran 3rd in
the 800m in 2:22.97 -- the #10 P-P mark ever, and
Allison Bailey, who took
4th in the discus (100'3). Junior
Amy Rapp took 3rd in the
1500m (5:00.58) and 3rd in the 5000m (19:18.83). Senior
Izzy Smith took 2nd in
the 400 hurdles (66.43), and freshman
Tia Erickson took 4th
in the javelin (105'6).
Pomona-Pitzer doesn't compete this weekend, but resumes competition Saturday,
March 26 at the UC San Diego Collegiate Open.
Men's Track & Field

Pomona-Pitzer's men's track & field team competed well at the UC San Diego
Collegiate Open Saturday, March 26 in La Jolla. The Sagehens scored 29 points to
finish 11th out of 18 scoring teams. Junior Ty Bundgaard high jumped 6'6 3/4 to
finish 2nd overall, while senior Rich Cannon ran the 800m in 1:56.53 to record a
personal best and place fourth overall. Lucas Koehler ran the 400m hurdles in
56.96 to finish 6th overall, while teammate Joey Cappola ran 57.79. In the
javelin, Alex Head tossed the spear 165'0 to finish sixth. The Sagehens travel
to Occidental to take on Oxy, La Verne and Claremont-M-S in a SCIAC friendly
Saturday in Eagle Rock.
Pomona-Pitzer's men's team finished an outstanding 6-1 at the SCIAC
Multi-Dual Meet Saturday at La Verne's Ortmayer Stadium. The Sagehens defeated
all SCIAC schools but cross-campus rival Claremont-M-S, which just edged
Pomona-Pitzer, 107-96. The Sagehens downed Cal Lutheran (125-72), Caltech
(129-70), Occidental (118-79), La Verne (112-82), Redlands (111-91), and
Whittier (141-44).
Individually on the track, Pomona-Pitzer went 1-2 in the middle distance races.
David Maas (1:58.60) won the 800m followed by Rich Cannon (1:58.98), while Will
Leer won the 1500m (4:06.43) followed by Cannon again (4:07.61).
Sean McCarron took two seconds -- in the 5000m (15:57.01) and in the 3000m
steeplechase (10:01.59).
On the field, Ty Bundgaard won the high jump (6-6) and took third in the triple
jump (44-11 3/4), Matt Johnson took third in the discus (142'0) and second in
the hammer (151-0), while Ari Polychronopolous won the hammer at 162'5. Alex
Head took second in the javelin at 183'9.
