Baseball

In his final game as a Sagehen, Felipe Aguilar homered and drove in three
runs as Pomona-Pitzer defeated Occidental College 17-7. Michael Joannides
pitched eight strong innings, allowing two runs and striking out three.
Felipe Aguilar went 3 for 5 with 6 RBI's, including a 2 run homerun and a
grand slam, and Michael Joannides pitched a complete game as the Sagehens shut
down the University of Redlands 10-1 on Wednesday.
Michael Joannides pitched eight innings, allowing two runs and striking out
four as the Sagehens completed a four-game season sweep of the CMS Stags with a
7-2 win. Sam Whitehead contributed to the cause, going 2 for 4 with three RBI's,
and Ben Ginsberg and Jase Turner each added two RBI's. Pomona-Pitzer seniors
Turner, Aguilar, Whitehead, Tyler Burr and Natty Miller finished their careers
with an astonishing 12-1 record against the Stags.
Jase Turner and Felipe Aguilar both hit homeruns as the Sagehens overcame six
errors to defeat host Azusa Pacific on Monday, 8-7. Kyle Buika pitched six
innings allowing only one earned run and striking out four, but Alex Perkins
earned the victory with two and two-third scoreless innings. This is the eighth
win in the last nine games for the Sagehens.
The Sagehens took both games of a doubleheader against sixth street rival
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday 5-4 (10 innings), and 7-5.
Ben Shanker went 5 for 5 with a homerun and 3 RBI's, and Jase Turner added
two hits including a homerun in the Sagehen's 9-7 win over CMS. Kyle Buika
pitched seven innings allowing no earned runs for the win. On Saturday,
Pomona-Pitzer travels to CMS for a doubleheader starting at 11:00 am.
Michael Joannides pitched nine innings allowing no earned runs and striking
out 11 as the Sagehens defeated Whittier College 9-5 in a game postponed due to
rain. Ben Ginsberg went 3 for 4 with an RBI, and Felipe Aguilar went 2 for 4
with a double and 2 RBI's.
Allowing 10 runs on 14 hits, the Sagehens fell to the visiting Bulldogs of
Redlands on Friday 10-3. Ben Shanker went 2 for 4 with a home run and 2 RBI's in
the loss. After allowing five run in the second inning, the Hens settled down
and kept the Bulldogs scoreless for the next three innings. Pomona-Pitzer drew
within 3 runs in the fifth inning, but could not get any closer.
The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team lost to La Verne 5-2 on Friday, in a game
shortened by rain. Senior second baseman Sam Whitehead went 2 for 3, and Natty
Miller pitched two scoreless innings for the Sagehens, who had scored the final
two runs of the game before the rain intervened.
Softball
Overall: 2-21 SCIAC:
1-15
Kindra Wilson and
Katie Mathews each went 4
for 4 as the Sagehens ended the 2005 season with a 6-1 win over Occidental on
Saturday. Billie McGrane
pitched seven innings allowing no earned runs and striking out 4 for the win.
McGrane also had two RBI's on the day.
The Hens fell to the Poets of Whittier College 12-1 on Friday.
The softball team broke a 71 game losing streak on Saturday with a 2-1
victory over visiting Blackburn College.
Billie McGrane pitched 7 innings with
no earned runs and 4 strikeouts. At the plate,
Leanne Stein went 2 for 3, and
McGrane went 1 for 2 with 2 RBI's.
Men's Tennis

Pomona-Pitzer posted a 7-0 win over Caltech in the final round
of the SCIAC Championships on Saturday. The Sagehens swept the doubles and all
six singles positions. In his final collegiate dual match, senior
Nate Pealer won at number one
doubles, 8-3, and at number three singles, 6-2, 6-0.
In the second round of the SCIAC Championships, the Sagehens
defeated Whittier College 6-0. Pomona-Pitzer swept the doubles and won at the
first five singles positions to seal the match.
After taking the doubles point against Occidental College, the
Sagehens managed only one singles victory in falling to the Tigers 4-2 in the
first round of the Men's Tennis SCIAC Championships at Whittier on Friday.
Jeff Jablonski and
Nate Pealer were victorious at
number one doubles 9-7, and Neil
Patel and Don Richards also
won 9-7 to give the Hens their first point. At number one singles, Jablonksi
won 6-2, 6-4.
Freshmen Blake
Phillips and Drew Olian
anchored the Sagehens at number one doubles, winning 8-5 and propelling the
Sagehens to a 7-0 victory over Whittier College on Saturday. Sophomore
Don Richards and junior
JB Wogan were winners at number two doubles, 8-3, and sophomore
Ben Kaufman and freshman
Michael Carlson were 8-3
winners at number three doubles. In singles,
Jeff Jablonski was a 6-1,
6-0 winner at the number one spot. Other winners include senior
Nate Pealer (6-0, 6-1), Richards
(7-5, 6-0), Kaufman (6-0, 6-1), Olian (6-0, 6-3, and Carlson (6-1, 6-0). On
Friday, the Sagehens return to Whittier College for the conference
championships.
Michael Carlson and
John Auer provided strong play as
the Sagehens defeated La Sierra 7-0 on Friday. Carlson teamed with
Ben Kaufman at number three
doubles and notched an 8-1 win. John Auer scored a 6-1, 6-3 win at number six
singles. Also victorious for Pomona-Pitzer was freshman
Drew Olian,
Blake Phillips,
JB Wogan, Kaufman, and
Nate Pealer.
The men's tennis team fell to CMS and Redlands in back to back matches 7-0.
Despite the score, there were strong showings in the doubles and many of the
singles matches. On Friday, the Sagehens travel to La Sierra for a 2:00 pm
match.
Battling at doubles, the Sagehens fell 8-5, 9-7, 8-5 to lose the doubles
point against the number seven ranked Gusties of Gustavis Adolphus. The Hens
lost the match by the final score of 7-0, despite strong showings from senior
Nate Pealer at number three
singles (4-6, 3-6), and sophomore
Jeff Jablonski at number one
singles (3-6, 3-6). On Friday, Pomona-Pitzer moves across the street to take on
the sixth ranked Stags of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 2:00 pm.
Women's Tennis

After falling to Occidental 6-2 in the first round of the conference
championship, the Sagehens recovered to defeat Whittier College 9-0. In the
final dual match of the 2005 season, Pomona-Pitzer lost to La Verne 5-4. In the
final match, the Hens won at numbers one and two doubles. In singles, number two
player Brittany Biebl was a
6-4, 6-0 winner. Caitlin Guthrie
won at number five singles, 6-4, 6-4 to give the Hens their fourth point.
The women's tennis team defeated the University of La Verne 5-4 on Friday.
Sophomore Molly Berman and senior
Margot Filstein battled to an 8-6 defeat at
number two doubles, as the Athenas of CMS defeated Pomona-Pitzer 9-0 on Friday.
At the number two singles position, sophomore
Brittany Biebl lost a close three
set match, 6-3, 4-6, 10-8. On Saturday, the Hens travel to play Redlands at 9:30
am.
The women's tennis team lost five matches over the weekend, falling to
Middlebury, Trinity (TX), Rhodes, DePauw, and Hardin-Simmons. Against
Hardin-Simmons, the number one doubles team of
Brittany Biebl and
Jenn Wilcox
were victorious 8-6. In singles, Molly Berman won at the number one singles
position, 1-6, 6-3, 10-4, and Biebl cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win at number two
singles.
Women's Track & Field

Frosh Rebecca Sedillo recorded a personal best 59.04 Friday in the 400m to lead
the Sagehen women at the 2005 California/Nevada Track & Field Championships at
Fresno State Friday and Saturday, April 22-23. Sedillo's time also moves her to
the #7 position on the P-P all-time lists. Junior Amy Rapp ran 11:01.56 to take
6th in the 3000m, while senior Izzy Smith ran 65.40 in the 400 hurdles.
Pomona-Pitzer's women's track and field team finished sixth Monday, April 18 in
the 2005 SCIAC Championships held at home on Strehle Track. The Sagehens tallied
25 points to finish behind SCIAC champion La Verne (228), Claremont-M-S (184),
Occidental (61), Redlands (39), and Cal Lutheran (27).
The Sagehens finished ahead of Caltech (22) and Whittier (3).
Pomona-Pitzer had six All-SCIAC performers. Frosh Rebecca Sedillo took third in
the 400m in a personal best 59.04, which is the #7 mark in school history. In
the same race, soph Lindsay Ludwick clocked 62.11 to take sixth.
Junior Amy Rapp finished third in the 1500m (4:54.58), while senior teammate
Izzy Smith finished third in the 400m hurdles (65.51). Frosh Kira Donnelly took
sixth in the 5000m (19:09.60), while senior Ellen Smith took sixth in the triple
jump at 32-9. In addition, the 4x400m relay team of Sedillo, Karen Ring, Ludwick
and Smith clocked 4:07.72 to record the #10 mark in school history.
A handful of Sagehens will compete in the CA/NV Track & Field Championships this
Friday and Saturday at Fresno State.
Pomona-Pitzer's women's track and field team put up some strong marks Saturday,
April 9 at the Azusa Pacific Meet of Champions. A frosh trio of Rebecca Sedillo,
Hilary Parker, and Anna Wittenberg recorded season's bests in the squad's final
tuneup before the 2005 SCIAC Championships this coming weekend. Sedillo ran the
400m in 60.08, Parker ran the 100 hurdles in 16.65, and Wittenberg ran the 800m
in 2:35.00. The Sagehens host two meets this coming weekend.
On Friday, April 15 Pomona-Pitzer hosts the 19th annual
Pomona-Pitzer Invitational -- a large, high-quality meet featuring nearly
1500 athletes, including collegians and post-collegiate athletes. Running events
begin at 8:30am and field event begin at 9am. The meet concludes at 6:45pm. For

Men's Track & Field

Pomona-Pitzer's men's track & field team competed well at the UC San Diego
Collegiate Open Saturday, March 26 in La Jolla. The Sagehens scored 29 points to
finish 11th out of 18 scoring teams. Junior Ty Bundgaard high jumped 6'6 3/4 to
finish 2nd overall, while senior Rich Cannon ran the 800m in 1:56.53 to record a
personal best and place fourth overall. Lucas Koehler ran the 400m hurdles in
56.96 to finish 6th overall, while teammate Joey Cappola ran 57.79. In the
javelin, Alex Head tossed the spear 165'0 to finish sixth. The Sagehens travel
to Occidental to take on Oxy, La Verne and Claremont-M-S in a SCIAC friendly
Saturday in Eagle Rock.
Women's Water Polo
Overall: 11-13 SCIAC:

Pomona-Pitzer won the Collegiate Division III Women's Water Polo
Championships Sunday after Lauren Moore '05 scored against Cal State East Bay
with only four seconds to go.
East Bay was ahead 4-3 in the third quarter, but the Sagehens evened it up early
in the fourth. East Bay scored to move ahead 5-4, then Pomona-Pitzer quickly
tied the game again. With 19 seconds left, Pomona-Pitzer called a time out to
make plans to capitalize on its one-player advantage over East Bay, which had a
player in the ejection (penalty) area. According to Coach Scott Smith, the
Sagehens set up a formation to stretch East Bay's defense, and Moore, the teams'
strongest shooter, was left open and scored.
Moore, who scored two goals in the game, was named MVP for the tourney, which
was hosted in Haldeman Pool on Pomona's campus May 6-8. Also scoring for the
Sagehens in this game were Lara Kruska (2), Toby Branz and Cherise Saito.

In the championship game of the 2005 SCIAC Water Polo Championships, the
Sagehens were upended by Redlands, 10-7. Pomona-Pitzer took an early lead, and
led 6-5 at the half. The second half was a different story, as Redlands quickly
gained the lead by outscoring the Hens 5-1 to put the game, and the conference
title out of reach. On Friday, May 6, the Sagehens will host the 2005 Women's
Water Polo Championships. Please stay posted for more information.
Laura Condon scored 3 goals, and Lauren Moore and Toby Branz each added 2 as
the Sagehens were victorious in their first round of the
2005 SCIAC Water Polo
Championships. On Saturday, the Sagehens take on Occidental at 1:00 pm
Lara Kruska and Sarah Sinclair each scored two goals to lead the Sagehens to
a 7-5 victory over La Verne on Wednesday. Goalie Carolyn Keifer had 5 saves, and
Emma Duarte, Toby Branz, and Tanya Glasser each added one goal.
The Sagehens opened conference play with a 10-8 win over Occidental on
Saturday. Sarah Sinclair scored three goals and Toby Branz and Lauren Moore each
added two.
