Football

Joe Cappola led the
Sagehens to their first win of the season on Saturday, defeating host Cal
Lutheran 27-26. Cappola rushed for 150 yards on 11 carries and 1 touchdown
as a running back, and also caught 4 passes for 80 yards and a touchdown.
The Kingsmen scored first, off of a 34 yard touchdown pass in the fist four
minutes of the game. The Sagehens answered back, with a four play, 77 yard drive
capped by a one yard scoring run by quarterback
Justin Fenchel. Going into
halftime, the Kingsmen held on to a 20-14 lead, and after three quarters, the
lead was down to 3, 24-21. In the fourth quarter, Cappola caught a 23 yard
touchdown pass from Fenchel, capping off a six play, 75 yard drive, and giving
the Sagehens the lead for good.
In a game that featured nine turnovers, the Sagehens lost to the visiting
Whittier Poets 9-8 on Saturday. Kicker
Andrew Floyd opened the
scoring in the second quarter, nailing a 22 yard field goal to put Pomona-Pitzer
up 3-0. The Sagehens then scored on a safety to take a 5-0 lead into the half.
In the third quarter, the Poets capitalized on a stagnant Sagehen offense, and
hit a 21 yard field goal to close the gap, 5-3. With just under four minutes
remaining in the third period, Floyd answered back with a 26 yard field goal off
of a six play, 24 yard drive to give the Hens an 8-3 lead. Facing a third and
25, Whittier quarterback Josh Scurlock found an open receiver for a 40 yard
touchdown as the third quarter came to an end; the conversion attempt failed.
That would end the scoring threat, and the Poets went on to win the game 9-8.
The Sagehens lost a closely fought battle on Saturday, falling to the
Panthers of Chapman 24-17 in overtime. This was only the second ever meeting
between these two teams, with Chapman prevailing in 1994 61-14. Quarterback
Justin Fenchel was 17-34 for 264 yards, and Raudric Curtis rushed for over one
hundred yards and a touchdown; he also threw a touchdown pass to Guthrie Dundas
in overtime. Trailing 10-0 in an evenly fought game, the Sagehens were the first
to strike in the second half with a three yard run by Raudric Curtis. In the
fourth quarter, Andrew Floyd drilled a 28 yard field goal to tie the game. In
the overtime period, each team receives the ball on the 25 yard line and they
alternate possesions. The Sagehens got on the board first with an 11 yard option
from Curtis to Dundas to take a 17-10 lead. The Panthers answered back, and took
the next possession. After several goal line stops, a penalty gave the Panthers
a first down and as a result, the decisive touchdown.
Four turnovers proved costly on Saturday, as the visiting Sagehens lost to
the Loggers of Puget Sound 10-7. The Sagehens managed just 234 yards of total
offense in a game that went scoreless until the third quarter. Running back Alan
Mouritsen rushed for 60 yards on 19 carries, and quarterback Cody Peterson added
40 on 11 carries; Peterson finished 9-17 for 136 yards and a touchdown. On
Saturday, the Hens return home to take on Chapman University at 1:00 pm.
The Sagehens were outscored 12-0 in a decisive third quarter on Saturday as
they fell to host La Verne to open the 2004 season. Sophomore running back Alan
Mouritsen led the Hens with 169 yards on 16 carries, including a 50 yard
touchdown run. Turnovers made the difference in this game however; Pomona-Pitzer
threw two interceptions and fumbled the ball away once. On Saturday, the
Sagehens will attempt to ounce back against the University of Puget Sound.
Men's Soccer
Overall: 5-4 SCIAC:

Mario Velez scored both goals
in a 2-0 win over Cal Lutheran at home on Wednesday. The first goal came in the
53rd minute off of a thru-ball assist by
Alex Pickrell. The second
goal came with one minute remaining and was from 20 yards out. On Saturday the
Sagehens travel to Caltech to take on the Beavers at 11 am.
Scott Coleman scored on a
penalty kick in the 93rd minute to give the Sagehens their first win over CMS
since 2000. Both teams battled to a scoreless tie for 90 minutes, but in the
overtime period, Coleman was fouled in the box, giving the Sagehens the penalty
kick, and as a result, the win. On Wednesday, they take on Cal Lutheran at 4 pm.
Scott Coleman scored four
goals and Alex Montes added two
as the Sagehens handed the Whittier Poets a 7-0 loss.
Joey Greenwald scored the only goal in a closely contested battle with La
Verne on Wednesday. The win brings the Sagehens back to .500 in conference play
The goal, a header, came in the 80th minute.
The 2004 SCIAC season got underway on Saturday, as the Sagehens lost to host
Redlands 2-0. This is the third consecutive game the Hens have been shut out.
The Bulldogs out shot the Sagehens 22-4, scoring in the 56th and 68th minutes of
play. On Wednesday the team hosts La Verne at 4 pm.
The men's Soccer Team lost a tune-up match to Asuza Pacific 4-0. The Sagehens
managed only one shot on goal compared to 17 for APU, who scored two goals in
each half.
The Slugs of UC Santa Cruz defeated the Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer on Sunday
3-0. Goalkeeper Dan Bendett had seven saves, including a few spectacular goal
saving dives. The Slugs scored in the 30th minute to take a 1-0 lead into half
time. The game remained tight up into the 69th minute, when Santa Cruz scored
again, this time on a one on one breakaway. The Slugs scored again in the 76th
minute to put the game away. On Wednesday, the Sagehens visit Azusa Pacific for
a 4:00 pm game.
Junior Alexis Montes scored a hat trick as the Sagehens defeated visiting
Christian Heritage 4-0.
Visiting Southwestern University ruined the Sagehens 2004 home opener on
Saturday with a 2-1 overtime victory. Southwestern jumped out to an early lead,
scoring in the 13th minute off of a cross from 20 yards out. The Sagehens
answered in the 33rd minute with a spectacular goal by Freshman Kohei Suwabe to
tie the game heading into halftime. The game remained tied into the first ten
minute overtime period when, in the 99th minute, Southwestern scored to win the
game 2-1. On Thursday, the Sagehens host Christian Heritage at 5 pm.

Women's Soccer
Overall: 4-3-3
SCIAC: 3-1-2
The Sagehens traveled to Thousand Oaks to play Cal Lutheran
for a midweek SCIAC game on Wednesday. In a closely contested game, the Hens and
Regals battled to a 0-0 draw after 90 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of
overtime. Goalkeeper Kelsyn
Bevins (Fr., Missoula, MT / Hellgate) came up big in the net to keep Cal
Lutheran off the scoreboard. Bevins made 9 saves, including a great diving save
near the end of regulation to keep the score knotted at zero. The Hens took 6
shots, but were held scoreless for the first time this season. The tie brings
Pomona-Pitzer’s record to 4-3-3 overall and 3-1-2 in SCIAC play after the end of
the first round of games. The Hens have a bye date over the weekend and start
the second round of action at Redlands on Wednesday, Oct. 20th. Redlands is
undefeated so far in SCIAC play and is ranked #22 in the country for Division
III teams.
Pomona-Pitzer and CMS battled to a 1-1 tie on Saturday. In
the 10th minute, CMS scored to give the Athenas a 1-0 lead. The
Sagehens remained down a goal until the 72nd minute when freshman
Sonya Cifuentes-Hiss
scored off of an up-field run to tie the game. Goalkeeper
Kelsyn Bevins played recorded
a record 13 saves on the day. Pomona-Pitzer continues their season on Wednesday
visiting Cal Lutheran at 4 pm.
Katherine Moskop, skillfully
beat a defender off the dribble and directed a far post shot into the goal at
the 28 second mark of the first overtime period, giving the Sagehens their
second shutout and second SCIAC win in a row. Occidental and Pomona-Pitzer
battled for 90 minutes of regulation play with no score to show for it in a hard
fought game. The Sagehens quickly capitalized on the overtime opportunity to
walk away with their third win in four games. Their record now stands at 3-3-1
and on Wednesday, Pomona-Pitzer will compete against the Whittier Poets, who
entered the 2004 season as reigning SCIAC Champions.

The women’s soccer
team traveled down the street to take on the Leopards of La Verne on Wednesday.
With an assist by Ashley Hovey, Sonya Cifuentes-Hiss scored off of a well-placed
far post shot in the first two minutes of overtime to give the Sagehens their
first conference win in two seasons. The final score was 1-0 in overtime as
the Sagehens and Leopards remained scoreless for the entire 90 minutes of play.
After the game, Coach Jen Scanlon could only utter a succinct, “wow” as her
summation of the game. On Saturday, the Sagehens host Occidental at 11 am.
The SCAIC opener pitted Pomona-Pitzer versus the Redlands
Bulldogs on Saturday. Redlands entered the game 4–1 and ranked #6 in the West
Region. The Sagehens came ready to take on the challenge, scoring an early goal
that was disallowed as the ball hit the net after an advantage call was taken
away. The Hens kept the pressure on however and notched an official goal in the
37th minute. A combination down the left flank resulted in the ball being sent
into the box, where it bounced to Lily Muldoon, (So., Denver, CO / Denver East),
who slotted it home for her first collegiate goal and a 1–0 lead. The rest of
the game saw great play from both teams, but no more scoring occurred until the
latter end of the second half, when two goals were scored by Redlands’ Sarah
Compton and Ashley West in the 71st and 85th minute. This
allowed the Bulldogs to come away with the 2-1 win. The Sagehens continue their
season this Wednesday, traveling to La Verne for a 4:00 pm game.
The Women’s Soccer Team traveled to Cal State Fullerton to challenge the Hope
International Royals on Tuesday and got their first win of the season. The
Sagehens dominated from beginning to end en route to a 5-2 win, with sophomore
forward Kate Walker scoring three goals (13th, 31st, and 64th minutes of play)
for the Hens. The score remained knotted at two until midfielder Katherine
Moskop finessed the ball past the Royals goalkeeper in the 35th minute of play
to put the Hens up 3-2. Pomona-Pitzer then solidified their lead by scoring two
more goals in the second half and holding Hope International scoreless. Aliza
Norwood scored a goal off of a penalty kick one minute into the second half.
Other key players in the match were Freshman Sonya Cifuentes-Hiss, Alex Hayden,
and Femke Oldham who each tallied assists. The Hens continue their season at
home on Saturday with their first SCIAC conference game versus Redlands.
Men's Water Polo
Overall: 2-3 SCIAC:
0-0
The men's Water Polo team could not overcome a low-scoring first half, and
fell to the Beavers of MIT 10-7. Trailing 5-2 after the first two periods, the
Hens came back, scoring 5 goals in the last two periods, but it wasn't enough.
Tim Brown led the team with five goals, and Carlos Diy had seven saves on the
evening.
The men's Water Polo team opened the 2004 season by competing in the Triton
Invitational Tournament, hosted by UC San Diego. The Sagehens went 2 and 2 on
the weekend, defeating conference members Whittier (7-6), and La Verne (11-8),
but falling to UCSD (9-16), and UC Davis (6-17). On Saturday and Sunday, the
Hens will compete in the Inland Empire Tournament.
Volleyball
Overall: 12-7
SCIAC: 4-2
The Sagehens ran their winning streak to three, with a win
over Occidental on Tuesday.
Katherine Hopkins led the way with 14 kills and no errors, hitting .500 on
the evening; Alysha Lascano
added 30 sets and 12 digs. After falling to CMS on Friday, the Hens rebounded by
defeating Chapman 3015, 30-28, 24-30, 30-24, and then Caltech 30-19, 30-12,
30-20. On Friday, the Hens visit Cal Lutheran for a 7:30 match.
After an opening night win over Middlebury, the Sagehens
defeated Wesleyen, Muhlenberg, and Amherst to win the Amherst Women's Volleyball
Classic on Saturday. Kat Hopkins was named tournament MVP and
Jessica Rybka was
named to the All-Tournament Team.
Sophomore Laura Laakso paced the Hens with 33 sets as they
defeated the Poets of Whittier in three games, 30-22, 30-24, 30-22. Laakso's set
total equalled the entire Whittier team total. Jessica Rybka tallied 13 kills
and Kat Hopkins added 10 kills and 14 digs. The Hens will depart for Amherst to
participate in the Amherst Invitational Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
The Sagehens defeated Franklin & Marshall in the opening
round of the 2004 Pacific Coast Invitational but then fell to Hayward, UCSC, and
Vanguard in the subsequent rounds. Senior Jessica Rybka was named to the
All-Tournament team.
Opening the 2004 SCIAC season in style, the Sagehens came
up with a 30-26, 30-32, 28-30, 30-24, 15-8 win over visiting Redlands on Tuesday
night. Alex Wakeman and Laura Laakso each had 30 digs and Jessica Rybka had 18
kills to lead the Hens. On Friday Pomona-Pitzer hosts the Pacific Coast
Invitational Tournament, where they play Franklin and Marshall at 2 pm.
The Hens defeated Pacific University 34-32, 30-25, 30-19 in
the final game of the Whittier/ Oxy Invite. Senior Jessica Rybka had 14 kills
and a .343 percentage, and Sophomore Laura Laakso had 29 sets to pace the Hens.
On Tuesday, Pomona-Pitzer opens SCIAC competition against Redlands at 7:30 pm.
Whitworth got the best of the Hens at the Whittier/ Oxy
Invite on Saturday, 21-30, 20-30, 21-30. Rachele Treger had a .444 attack
percentage and Laura Laakso had 13 sets to lead the Hens.
The women's Volleyball season got underway with a loss to
Cal Lutheran and a win over Whittier, at the Whittier/Oxy Invite on Friday. In
the first game of the tournament, the Hens fell to Cal Lutheran 22-30, 18-30,
24-30. They were able to rebound and defeat the tournament hosts, 30-16, 26-30,
30-25, 30-19. On Saturday, the Sagehens will play Whitworth and Pacific
University.
Men's Cross Country

Crosby
Freeman paced the number 20 ranked Sagehens with his ninth place finish at the UC Riverside
Invite on Saturday; the Hens finished tied for seventh place out of 13 teams;
Freeman's time of 24:57 was a Personal Record.
The Sagehens finished in 2nd place at the Big Hawaii Invite
on Saturday. Crosby Freeman finished in third place.
The men's Cross Country team finished 10th out of 12 teams.
Will Leer led the Sagehens with a 55th place finish in 27:38.. Finishing behind
Leer, were Will Swanson (84th, 29:01), Lucas Allen-Williams (91st, 29:47.2), and
Andrew McDavid (94th, 29:47.9).
Women's Cross Country

Pomona-Pitzer's women's cross country squad finished a
strong 9th out of 18 teams Saturday at the UC Riverside Invitational. The
Sagehens scored 234 points to finish as the third NCAA Division III squad in the
meet. Junior Amy Rapp led
the Sagehens with her 25th place in 19:29 over the 5000m (3.1 mile) course.

Kira Donnelly (34th,
19:40), frosh Erica Nelson
(69th, 20:31), junior Lisa
Parrillo (79th, 20:52), and sophomore
Karen Ring (90th (21:17).
A total of 167 women completed the race.The Sagehens do not compete on October
9, but resume competition on Friday, October 15 at the SCIAC Multi-Dual Meet at
La Mirada Park. The SCIAC men's race begins at 5pm, while the women run at
5:45pm.
The Sagehen women's cross country squad ran well in the
Hawaii Big Wave Invite Saturday in Honolulu. Pomona-Pitzer finished fourth out
of seven teams with 102 points, with the Univ. of Hawaii winning with 37. Kyra
Borg paced the Hens with her sixth place finish in 16:00 over the 4000m course.
Kira Donnelly (14th, 16:22), Amy Rapp (17th, 16:36), Ann Prouty (34th, 17:16)
and Erica Nelson (36th, 17:24) rounded out the top five.
Pomona-Pitzer women's cross country team opened the season
at the UC Irvine Invitational Saturday at Central Park in Huntington Beach. The
Sagehens finished 12th out of14 teams against tough Division I and II teams.
Junior Amy Rapp led Pomona-Pitzer with her 60th place finish in 20:41 over the
5000m (3.1 mile) course. Following Rapp for P-P were Kyra Borg (67th, 20:50),
Kira Donnelly (81st, 21:23), Lisa Parrillo (103rd, 22:23) and Becky Abbey
(104th, 22:30). UC San Diego won the meet with 74 points, followed by UC Irvine
at 86. Pomona-Pitzer took 12th at 326 points.
