Bi-Weekly Write-up - October 15, 2001  
Football                                                          2-4 Overall
  Pomona-Pitzer entertained the Loggers of Puget Sound on the 13th and came away with a blowout win, 56-13.  The Hens got into the endzone early and often, putting up 21 points in the first quarter.  The Hens would go up 28-0 before the Loggers got on the board with a score of their own.  The Sagehen team went into halftime up 35-7 and despite being held scoreless in the third stanza, would end up putting 21 more points on the board in the final period of play.

The Sagehen defense held the opposition to an astounding minus 3 yards rushing on the day, while accumulating 321 rushing yards of their own.  That rushing defensive performance by Hens was the third best in the history of the program.  

Matthew LaCoss had a huge day for Pomona-Pitzer, rushing the ball 18 times for 175 yards, with a long of 48,  scoring 2 touchdowns.  He also completed 5 of 12 passes from the QB position for 138 yards and 2 more touchdowns.  Benjamin LaCoss caught 2 of Matt's passes, and both went for scores, the longest on a 53 yard play action in the fourth quarter.  Jeremy Lim rushed for 67 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries, and Jon Samples went went for 44 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries.  Matthew Graves and Arthur Przbyl each scored a touchdown rushing the ball.   

Defensively, Jonathan Chock was in on 9 tackles, while teammate Joseph Cappola had 6 of his own, and an interception.  Joshua Meier and Jonathan Green also had 6 tackles on the afternoon. 

Pomona-Pitzer hosted the University of La Verne on the 6th of October and fell to the vistiting Leopards by the score of 33-7.  The Hens only points came in the second quarter of action on a 1 yard run by Jonathan Samples, which brought the score to 17-7 at halftime.  La Verne would then go on to score a few more times in the game to bring their total to 33 points.  
The game was a short one at 2 hours and 30 minutes as only 30 passes were attempted between the two teams all game long.  For the Hens, Matthew LaCoss was 6 of 13 passing the ball, throwing for 104 yards with 2 interceptions and no touchdowns.  John Anderson also got a bit of time at the quarterback position, completing 3 of his 4 attempts for 20 yards.  
Jon Samples led the Sagehen attack on the ground with 62 yards on 12 carries.  Samples provided the only touchdown of the day for the Hens with his 1 yard run.  Arthur Przbyl tallied 45 yards on the ground with his 9 carries.  
Samples also led the team in receptions on the afternoon, corralling 4 catches for 71 yards, including a long of 50 yards.  
On the defensive side of the ball, Bobby Boeche was in on 19 tackles, while Joseph Cappola played a part in 12 of his own.       

Women's Volleyball           2-11 Overall    2-5 SCIAC
  Pomona-Pitzer hosted the Bulldogs of Redlands on the night of the 9th and fell by 3 games to 1.  Susan Caplow came up with 17 kills for the Hens, while Colleen Chrisco and Elena Shih hit 15 apiece.  Chrisco led the team in digs with 13.  Shih dug up 11 balls as well to go with her solid offensive performance.  Setter Alysha Lascano had 30 assists on the night.  

The Hens played host to the Tiger team from Occidental on the night of October 6th and were defeated by the visiting team by the score of 3 games to 2.  The Sagehens were able to take a 2 games to 1 lead, but Oxy grabbed the last two games by scores of 30-25 and 15-8.  Renee Faulkner had 16 kills on the night to lead the team.  Colleen Chrisco and Vicenta Arrizon each dug up 13 balls for the Hens, while Alysha Lascano dished out 19 assists.

Pomona-Pitzer traveled down the road to LaVerne on the night of the 3rd and fell to the nationally ranked Leopards by 3 games to 2.  Vicenta Arrizon and Renee Faulkner led the team in kills with 11 and 9, respectively, while  Colleen Chrisco and Patty Van Kuran led the team in digs with 20 and 18.  Both Alysha Lascano and Jeannie Kenmotsu had 16 assists on the evening.

The Sagehens hosted Whittier on the night of October 2nd and fell to the Poets by 3 games to 1.  Renee Faulkner led the way offensively for the Sagehens with 12 kills.  Elena Shih was tops defensively with 10 digs on the night.  Frosh setter Alysha Lascano dished out 9 assists in the game.

Men's Soccer                       7-6 Overall      6-3 SCIAC
Pomona-Pitzer hosted Redlands on the 13th of October and fell to the Bulldogs for the second time this year, this time, 3-0.  The visiting team got on the board early in the 8th minute of action, and that would be all they would need.  The Hens were outshot 24-15 on the day as goalkeeper Jay Schneider was constantly tested, making 12 saves. 

The Sagehen men continued their stellar string of SCIAC wins on the 10th of October with a 2-1 overtime victory over previously undefeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.  Andrew Watkins got the Hens on the board early with a goal in the 6th minute of play.  The only other goal in regulation came from the rival Stags with under a minute remaining in the game.  Matt Lee Ashley came through for the Hens, however, with his overtime winner in the 95th minute.  In goal, Jay Schneider made 5 saves for Pomona-Pitzer.    

After having dropped the first two conference games, the Sagehen men have stormed back to claim 5 SCIAC contests in a row.  The Hens continued the run with a 5-1 victory over the Leopards of LaVerne on the 6th.  Mario Velez contributed 2 goals in the game to bring his season total to 3, while Matt Lee-Ashley scored his 8th goal of the season.  Alex Pickrell and Scott Coleman also found the back of the net for Pomona-Pitzer.

The Sagehen men won their 4th straight SCIAC contest on the 3rd of October, defeating the Poets of Whittier in double overtime by the score of 3-2.  Matt Lee-Ashley's goal in the 112th minute of play sealed the deal for the Hens.  The visiting Poets tied the game just before the end of regulation in the 70th minute of play.  Joe Amick and Andrew Watkins provided the 2 other goals for the Sagehens on the afternoon.

Women's Soccer                5-9 Overall      2-7 SCIAC
The Sagehens traveled to Redlands on the 13th and lost a game to the Bulldogs by  the score of 3-1.  Izzy Smith scored the lone goal for the Hens with 6 minutes remaining in regulation.  All four games in the game were scored in the final 20 minutes of action.  Ashley Thompson made 14 saves in net for the Hens, as Pomona-Pitzer was outshot 22-4.

Pomona-Pitzer hosted Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on the 10th and fell to the Athenas  by the score of 2-0.  The Hens were able to get off only 8 shots on the afternoon while goalkeeper Ashley Thompson was constantly tested, making 13 saves.  

The Hens hosted the Leopards of LaVerne on the 6th of October and fell by the score of 3-0.  Ashley Thompson gave up just one goal in 75 minutes of action as goalkeeper.

Pomona-Pitzer defeated Whittier College in overtime on the 3rd of October to claim their second conference win of the year.  The Poets went ahead 1-0 with an early goal but the Hens came back with a goal by Sarah Staller, her 8th on the year, and the overtime goal by Aliza Norwood.  

Men's Cross Country       6-1 Overall      6-1 SCIAC
Pomona-Pitzer's men's cross country squad finished second out of 8 SCIAC schools Friday at the Multi-Dual meet held at La Mirada Park. The Sagehens finished the day a strong 6-1 after scoring against each other conference school in dual meet scoring.

Sophomore Nate DeFelice paced the Sagehens with his 7th place finish in 27:45 over the 8000m (5 mile) course). Behind DeFelice for Pomona-Pitzer were frosh Braden Boice (14th, 28:38), senior Jake Oken Berg (17th, 29:09), frosh Dan Shickich (19th, 29:21) and senior Paul Snape (25th, 29:37).

Pomona-Pitzer doesn't compete this weekend, but races in the SCIAC Championships Saturday, October 27 at Prado Park in Chino. The men's race begins at 9:45am.

Women's Cross Country  5-2 Overall      5-2 SCIAC
Pomona-Pitzer's women's cross country squad finished third out of 8 SCIAC schools Friday at the Multi-Dual meet held at La Mirada Park. The Sagehens finished the day 5-2 after scoring against each other conference school in dual meet scoring.

Junior Laura Bishop won the race for the second year in a row. Bishop ran with the lead pack for the first two miles, and then pulled away handily in the final mile to finish first. Bishop's time of 18:38 over the 5000m (3.1 mile) course beat the second place runner by 19 seconds.

Behind Bishop for Pomona-Pitzer were sophomores Stefanie McDougall (14th, 19:57) and Heather Callahan (15th, 20:04) -- both running personal best times. Frosh Ann Prouty (26th, 21:00) and sophomore Susie Roley (27th, 21:07) rounded out the top five.

Pomona-Pitzer doesn't compete this weekend, but races in the SCIAC Championships Saturday, October 27 at Prado Park in Chino. The women's race begins at 9am.

Men's Water Polo                1-14 Overall   0-0 SCIAC
Pomona-Pitzer dropped to 1-14 on the year after losing four tough games over the weekend in the Convergence Tournament, co-hosted by the Sagehens and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.  Sixteen teams from around the country came out to the tournament.  The Hens showed solid efforts in the losses to Boston College (5-3) and Brown (8-5), but got dismantled by Chaminade (13-2) and Harvard (12-3).  Pomona-Pitzer's leading scorer over the 4 games was Benjamin Speicher.  SCIAC play will begin this week as the Hens begin this Wednesday at Caltech.

The Hen’s were totally dominated by the LMU Lions in the Saturday game at Loyola.  Scores for PP came from shots by Luis Lopez – 1, and Ben Speicher – 3.  

Football                                                          1-3 Overall
  Pomona-Pitzer traveled to Redlands to take on the Bulldogs and fell by the score of 33-15.  The Hens stayed close the entire game as they led at halftime by the score of 8-6 and were down just 18-15 heading into the final stanza.  Fifteen unanswered points by Redlands in the 4th quarter proved to be too much as the Bulldogs went on to the victory.

Matt LaCoss again led the way for the Sagehens on the ground, carrying the ball 20 times for 126 yards.  Two of those carries went for touchdowns on the day, with a long of 44 yards.  The next highest rushing total for the Sagehens came from Jeremy Lim, who got the call 7 times for a total of 37 yards.  On the day, the Hens rushed the ball 46 times for a total of 194 yards.  Matt LaCoss also threw the ball 10 times in the game, completing 4 of those passes for 45 yards.  James Nachtwey was the recipient of two of those 4 completions for a total of 29 yards.  

Joseph Cappola and Bobby Boeche led the way defensively for Pomona-Pitzer with 7 and a half tackles apiece.    

 

The Sagehens traveled to Portland, Oregon to take on the Pioneers of Lewis and Clark College on the the 22nd of September.  The host Pios pulled away from the Hens for a 49-27 victory.  The first quarter of action ended in a 7-7 tie, and the Hens were still within striking distance at halftime, down just 28-13.  But a 21 point 3rd quarter by the host squad proved to be too much to overcome.

Sagehen Jonathan Samples led all rushers in the game with his 83 yard, 1 touchdown performance on 14 carries.  Arthur Pryzbyl was the next leading rusher for Pomona-Pitzer with 18 yards on 4 carries, and a touchdown.  Matt LaCoss also scored a touchdown on the ground for the Sagehens.  Alan Flores was the leading receiver for the Hens with 3 catches for 44 yards.  Adam Perlaky caught a touchdown pass with his sole reception on the afternoon.  

Four quarterbacks got in on the action in Saturday's game, going a collected 12 of 32 with 1 touchdown, that by John Anderson, and 2 interceptions.    

Women's Volleyball           2-7 Overall      2-1 SCIAC
  Pomona-Pitzer hosted the Regals of Cal Lutheran on the 29th and lost by the count of 3 games to none.  No Sagehen got more than 8 kills on the night as Vicenta Arrizon achieved that total, while Colleen Chrisco added 7 of her own.  Arrizon again led the team with 11 digs and Jeannie Kenmotsu led the team with 13 assists.

The Sagehens walked across the street on the night of September 28th and swept 3 games from rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, (30-28, 30-27, 32-30).  Vicenta Arrizon and Colleen Chrisco set the tone offensively for Pomona-Pitzer with 11 and 10 kills, respectively.  Arrizon also contributed with 14 digs on the night.  Renee Faulkner dug up 13 balls of her own.  Setter Alysha Lascano had 17 assists on the evening.

The Hen team opened up SCIAC play on the night of the 25th with a road win at Caltech.  The Hens swept the contest 3 games to none, not allowing more than 14 points in any game.  Renee Faulkner led the offensive charge for the Hens with 6 kills on the night.  Alysha Lascano distributed 11 assists to her Hen teammates.

Pomona-Pitzer traveled to Chapman on the 21st of September and fell to the host Panthers by 3 games to none.  Colleen Chrisco was the main offensive weapon for the Hen squad, with 14 kills on the evening.  Chrisco also dug up 10 balls.  Elena Shih contributed 11 digs as well.  Setter Alysha Lascano dished out 24 assists on the night.   

Men's Soccer                       4-5 Overall      3-2 SCIAC
After dropping their first 2 SCIAC games, the Hens have stormed back to a 3-2 conference record.  On September 29th, they traveled to Occidental and came back home 5-1 winners.  Liam Patrick came off the bench to tally a whopping 4 goals for the Sagehens.  Alex Pickrell scored the 5th goals for Pomona-Pitzer.  Providing assists in the game for the Hens were Rodolfo Bravo (2), Matt Lee-Ashley, Mario Velez, and Richard Cannon. 

Pomona-Pitzer got their second straight SCIAC win on the afternoon of the 26th with a 3-0 triumph over Caltech.  Matt Lee-Ashley scored 2 goals in the game, while Andrew Watkins added one of his own.  Joe Amick, Mario Velez, and Lee-Ashley all tallied assists in the game.  The stingy Sagehen defense allowed just 2 shots in the game.

The Hen men hosted a non-conference game with the Lancers of Cal Baptist on the 24th of September and went into double overtime before falling to the visiting squad, 2-1.  Mario Velez scored the lone Sagehen goal in the 68th minute on a free kick. The Lancers got the winning goal in 106th minute of play.

Pomona-Pitzer played host to the Kingsmen of California Lutheran on the 22nd and played their way to a hard-fought 1-0 win.  The only goal scored came in the third minute of action when Matt Lee-Ashley found the back of the net.  Goalkeeper Jay Schneider made 4 saves in the shut-out performance by the Hens.   

The Sagehen Men traveled to Redlands on the 19th of September and fell to the host Bulldogs by the score of 4-2.  The Hens got down early in the second minute of action but came back in the 17th minute to tie the score at one all with a goal from Matt Lee-Ashley.  Redlands then went on to score 3 unanswered goals before the Hens'  Ben Dewhirst scored with 4 minutes remaining in the contest.  Goalkeeper Jay Schneider made 5 saves between the pipes for the Sagehens.   

Women's Soccer                4-6 Overall      1-4 SCIAC
The Hens entered the win column in SCIAC play on September 29th with a 3-1 home win over Occidental.  The Hens received their goals from 3 different players in the game.  Susan Houge, Lauren Salvail, and Aliza Norwood all found the back of the net for Pomona-Pitzer.  Sarah Staller had 2 assists in the game, while Salvail and Jessica Ishien each had 1 apiece.  At goalkeeper, Ashley Thompson shut out the opponent in the first half before giving way to Alison Mathes for the second half of play.

Pomona-Pitzer hosted a non-conference game with Cornell College of Iowa on the afternoon of September 27th.  The game was a scoreless one until the 85th minute, when Sagehen Sara Staller found the back of the net, giving the Hens a 1-0 victory.  Jess Ichien provided the assist for Staller's goal.  Ashley Thompson and Alison Mathes eached pitched a shut-out in net, splitting time in goal for the Hens.

The Hens traveled to Cal Lutheran on the 22nd to take on a tough Regals team and fell to the host squad by the score of 6-2.  A goal by Sarah Staller brought the Hens to within 2-1 in the 32nd minute, but the Regals went on to score 4 unanswered goals before the Sagehens would score again.  That goal, the last of the game, again came from the foot of Staller.  Torry Shelton and Maggie Curnutte assisted the two goals from Staller.  Alison Mathes and Ashley Thompson split time in net for Pomona-Pitzer.

Pomona-Pitzer hosted the Redlands Bulldogs on the 19th and fell by the score of 6-1.  The visiting Bulldog squad got on the board early and often, taking a 5-0 lead into halftime.  Ashley Thompson got the Hens on the board in the 54th minute, but that would be the only goal of the day for the Hens.  For the Hens, Alison Mathes and Sierra Ferguson split time in net.

Men's Cross Country        0-0 Overall      0-0 SCIAC
Pomona-Pitzer's men's cross country team finished 21st out of 28 teams Saturday at the prestigious Stanford Invitational in northern California. The Sagehens were also first out of all Division III squads. Stanford won the team competition, followed by the Utah State and UC Santa Barbara.

Nate DeFelice led the Sagehens with his 71st place finish in 27:13 over the 8000m (5 mile) course. Behind DeFelice were Paul Snape (29:26), Braden Boice (29:38), Jake Oken Berg (30:09) and David Marshall (30:17).

Pomona-Pitzer next competes in the SCIAC Multi-Dual Meet on Friday, October 12 at La Mirada Park. All conference teams enter the day 0-0 and score dual meets against each other team.

Pomona-Pitzer's men' cross country team opened the season Saturday at the UC Riverside Invite - placing 20th out of 24 teams wih 524 points.

Nate DeFelice paced the Men Hens with his 53rd place finish in 27:11 over the 8000m (5 mile) course. Next for P-P were Braden Boice (125th, 28:29) and Jake Oken Berg (149th, 29:11).

Women's Cross Country  0-0 Overall      0-0 SCIAC

Junior Laura Bishop paced the Pomona-Pitzer women's cross country team Saturday the 29th at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto. Bishop, running a longer-than-usual 6000m (3.7 mile) course, clocked 22:36 to place 34th against tough Division I and II competition.

The Sagehens finished 21st out of 25 teams--and second among Division III teams. Stanford won the meet, followed by Arkansas, Brigham Young and UC Irvine.

Behind Bishop for the Sagehens were Stefanie McDougall (24:26), Heather Callahan (24:51), Erin Wagner (25:18), and Susie Roley (25:45).

Pomona-Pitzer next competes in the SCIAC Multi-Dual Meet on Friday, October 12 at La Mirada Park. All conference teams enter the day 0-0 and score dual meets against each other team.

Pomona-Pitzer's women' cross country team opened the season Saturday the 22nd at the UC Riverside Invite - placing 23rd out of 25 teams wih 568 points.

Sophomore Stefanie McDougall led the Sagehens in 95th place (20:43) over the 5000m (3.1 mile) course. Behind her for P-P were junior Erin Wagner (118th) in a huge personal best of 21:05, soph Heather Callahan (145th, 21:30), and frosh Alex Borst (147th, 21:35). A total of 265 woman completed the race.

Men's Water Polo                1-9 Overall      0-0 SCIAC
The Sagehens traveled north to participate in the U.C. Santa Cruz Slugfest over the weekend of the 28th and 29th.  Pomona-Pitzer took on 4 teams over the course of the weekend and came up short in all of the contests.  The Hens dropped games to Air Force (15-3), MIT (11-5), Santa Clara (15-5), and Redlands (16-4).  Benjamin Speicher scored 7 total goals in the games against MIT and Santa Clara but was injured for the other two games.
