Pomona-Pitzer 1, La Verne 1

Pomona-Pitzer 1, Redlands 2

Pomona-Pitzer 1, Cal Lutheran 0
A hard fought 1-0 win over Cal Lutheran moved Pomona-Pitzer into sole possession of first place in SCIAC. Freshman Lily Hitchner scored at the 8:46 mark of the first half, and the Sagehens were able to keep the Regals off the board for the duration of the game to pull out the victory. Hitchner’s goal came after a series of passes found her unmarked at the top of the penalty area. Four Sagehens touched the ball in quick succession as it moved from the left side of the field across the top of the box. The final passes went from Kim Ye, to Kate Walker, to Hitchner, who shot it far post, just out of reach from the keeper. It was Hitchner’s second goal of the season, both game-winners, and Walker and Ye picked up assists on the play. The Sagehens had another quality chance in the first half kicked off the line at the last second, saving the Regals from a 2-0 deficit. Sonya Cifuentes-Hiss used her speed to chase down a ball and slid to get a toe on it just before the Cal Lu keeper could pick it up. The ball rolled slowly towards the goal and a hustling Regal defender was able to clear it away just as it was ready to make it over the goal line.

The second half was a physical, messy affair, as Cal Lu pushed for the equalizer. Pomona-Pitzer was forced to deal with every ball being sent long into the box, and only quality goalkeeping from Kelsyn Bevins kept the Regals off the scoreboard. The Sagehens put together a few good counterattacking opportunities, but were not able to score again to gain some breathing room. The defense held tight, earning their second shutout in a row. Pomona-Pitzer had a 9-6 shot advantage on the day.

The win gives the Sagehens a 4-1-1 conference record after the first round of games, and 7-3-2 overall on the season. A CMS victory over Redlands leaves Pomona-Pitzer alone at the top of the standings (http://thesciac.org/w-soccer/standings.htm). With a bye on Wednesday, the Sagehens have a week to prepare for their rematch against Redlands. Pomona-Pitzer suffered it’s only SCIAC loss in the first round at the hands of the Bulldogs. The game will be played at 11:00 am on Saturday, October 15 at Redlands.

Pomona-Pitzer 3, CMS 0
With a convincing 3-0 victory over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens moved into a first place tie with Redlands for the SCIAC lead. The Sagehens traveled across the street to take on the Athenas for the big match-up in the Claremont Colleges rivalry. In addition to the rivalry, there was added importance to the game because the winner was in position to make up points on idle Redlands, who had a bye date for SCIAC competition. Played under the lights on a perfect night for soccer, the game lived up to its billing.

The first half saw CMS with the better of the play, as the Sagehens looked to sort out things defensively. Pomona-Pitzer held up under the pressure and Kelsyn Bevins made eight saves to keep the Athenas off the board. The Sagehens managed five shots on goal in the first half, but neither team could find the back of the net in the first 45 minutes of play, and halftime arrived with a 0-0 stalemate.

The second half brought end-to-end action, as both teams looked to get the games first goal. The Sagehens were much more organized on defense in this half and stepped up to win the midfield battles. Senior captain Anna Renery stood out with her tenacious work all over the field. Her efforts paid off in the 66th minute, as she sprinted onto a long ball served by defender Melissa Berg. Renery beat the CMS defense to the ball, took a touch to control it, and slotted it by the charging goalkeeper to the far post. The goal brought Renery’s season total to five, and stood up as the lone goal of the game until the closing minutes of action. With five minutes to go, the Sagehens added a second goal to give them some breathing room from the Athenas, who had been pressuring for the equalizer. Berg picked up her second assist of the day, playing a perfect free kick from the midfield line that cleared the CMS defense. Kim Ye sprinted onto the ball, controlled it well out of the air and knocked it home for a 2-0 Pomona-Pitzer lead. The Sagehens were not done though. Freshman Julia Carr scored her first collegiate goal on a long looping shot that curled just out of the goalies reach as time expired. The ball hit the back of the net as the final horn was sounding, and the Sagehens were able to rush the field to celebrate a big 3-0 win against their cross-street rivals.
