Bi-Weekly Write-up - April 15, 2002  
Men's Tennis                       12-9 Overall    5-2 SCIAC
Pomona-Pitzer finished the regular season with 6-1 win over La Verne.  The Hens won 2 of 3 doubles matches to earn the doubles point and then won 5 of 6 singles matches to clinch the team victory.  Samir Vora, Sam Gaines, and Chris Croxton won in impressive fashion for the Hens at #'s 2, 3, and 6, respectively.

Pomona-Pitzer won a tough SCIAC match over Cal Lutheran on the 5th, 4-3.  The Hens won the doubles point by winning at #'s 1 and 2 doubles and then won 3 of the 6 singles matches needed to clinch the victory.  Chris Croxton and Mike Benaroya won impressively for the Hens at #'s 5 and 6, respectively.

The Hens swept the visiting Chapman Panther squad on the 4th, 7-0.  Pomona Pitzer won the doubles matches by scores of 8-2, 8-3, and 8-4 and then went on to win all 6 singles contests.  Only two Hens were extended to 3 sets on the day.    

The Sagehens fell to a tough Gustavus Adolphus team on the 2nd, 7-0.  The Hens' #1 doubles tandem of J.R. Hall and Samir Vora were able to win their match, but the Hens lost the other two doubles matches and were unable to secure that point.  In singles play, the visiting squad disposed of the Hens at every position.  Jamie Frank was the only Sagehen to extend his match to a third set.


Softball                                  3-28 Overall  2-10 SCIAC
The Hens were swept in a double-header at home on the 13th, falling to C.S. Hayward 10-1, and 8-0.  In game 1, Jocelyn Burke had 2 of the Hens' 4 hits on the day and scored the lone run for the Sagehens.  Josina Morita pitched for the Hens, allowing 6 hits in 5 innings of work.
In the second game of the day, the Hen squad tallied just two hits on the day to Hayward's 9.  Jameela Hammond and Alison Mathes provided those 2 hits for the Hens.  Monica Belli allowed 9 hits in 6 innings on the mound for the Hens.  

Pomona-Pitzer was swept in a three game series against Cal Lutheran over the 5th and 6th of April.  In game 1 on Friday afternoon, the Hens fell by just one run in 9 innings, 6-5.  Amy Bertken and Stephanie Lazano each had multiple hits for the Hens, who committed 6 errors in the game.  Leanne Stein had 2 RBI's for the Hens on the day.  Josina Morita pitched the entire game for the Sagehen squad.  
On Saturday the 6th, the Hens fell twice by scores of 12-3 and 5-0.   In the morning game, 5 different Hens accounted for the 10 Pomona-Pitzer hits.  Amy Bertken had 2 hits and 2 RBI's for the Hens, while Monica Belli produced the other RBI for the Sagehens.  Belli and Jocelyn Burke split time on the mound for the Sagehen team.  Game 2 on Saturday saw the Hens end up scoreless despite 7 hits by the team.  Jocelyn Burke and Shannon Coggins each had two hits for the Hens in the game.


Baseball                  29-5 Overall  15-0 SCIAC
On the 13th, the Hens finished another SCIAC sweep by twice defeating the Stags of C-M-S.  In game 1, the Hens had a 5 run 9th inning to pull away for the 9-1 win.  Alan Flores was 4 for 6 on the day with 2 RBI's and a run.  Jose Cortez went 2 for 4 and Jase Turner was 1 for 2 with a homerun and 3 runs scored.  Game 2 of the afternoon saw the Hens get on the board early and often.  Pomona-Pitzer opened with a 5 run first and never looked back on the way to a 16-4 win.  Jose Cortez again starred at the plate with a 5 for 5 performance.  Luke Smude went 3 for 5 with a homerun, 4 RBI's, a sacrifice, and 2 runs scored.  Mike Renery got the win for the Hens, pitching 7 innings, allowing 3 runs on 8 hits, and striking out 2. 

The Sagehens began a 3 game weekend series with rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on the 12th, and did so with a 7-3 win.  Alan Flores led the Hens at the plate, going 3 for 4 with a run scored.  Both Rob Ruiz and Jose Cortez hit homeruns on the day for the Sagehens.  Spike Einsiedler got the win for the Hens, pitching 6 innings, allowing 7 hits, and striking out 3.

The Hens took two more games from Cal Lutheran on the 6th to make it a series sweep of the Kingsmen.  In the first game of the day, Matt Rager and Jose Cortez each had 3 hits.  One of Cortez' hits was a two-run homerun in the first inning.  Jase Turner and Rob Ruiz also left the yard for the Hens in the ballgame.  Adam Gardner got the win for the Sagehens, pitching 7 innings, allowing just 4 hits while striking out 6 batters.  Alex Smith came in for the save for Pomona-Pitzer.  Game 2 on Saturday saw the Hens' bats light up the opposition, as Pomona-Pitzer won 19-5.  Jose Cortez was 4 for 4 on the day with a double, a homerun, 2 RBI's, 2 walks, and 5 runs scored.  Rob Ruiz and Alan Flores also had big days, collecting 3 hits each on the afternoon.  The Sagehen squad combined for 20 hits in the game.  Mike Renery got the win for the Hens, pitching 6 innings and striking out 7 for the Hens.   

The Hens won the battle of the last two undefeated SCIAC teams by defeating visiting Cal Lutheran on the 5th, 4-1.  Spike Einsiedler pitched a complete game for the Hens, striking out 11, allowing just 6 hits, and 1 run while surrendering no walks on the day.  Alex Siele, Matt Rager, and Alan Flores all had 2 hits for the Hens.  Siele had a double and a home run for the Hens as well as crossing the plate twice.

The Hens traveled to Azusa Pacific to take on the tough NAIA squad and the Tigers downed the Hens, 7-1.  Matt Rager was the best hitter on the day for the Hens, as he went 2 for 2 with 2 walks on the day.  The Hens scored their lone run when Luke Smude singled home Rob Ruiz.  


Women's Tennis                  11-6 Overall   7-0 SCIAC

The Sagehen squad fell to the tough Triton team from U.C. San Diego on the 13th, 7-2.  The Sagehens got their 2 points from the #1 doubles match as well as from #1 singles.  In the doubles match, Sheree Schwartz and Kelli Howard were 8-3 winners.  At the #1 singles spot, Schwartz was victorious with a 6-1, 6-0 drubbing of her opponent.

The Hens finished the regular season undefeated in SCIAC play by defeating Cal Lutheran on the 12th, 8-1.  Pomona-Pitzer took the first two doubles matches and all 6 of the singles contests to earn the victory.  Ginger Wachter and Vicki Chen each won 6-0, 6-0 playing at #'s 5 and 6, respectively.

On Saturday the 6th, the Hens fell to Gustavus Adolphus by the score of 8-1.  The lone winner on the day for the Hens was Kelli Howard in 3 sets at the #3 position.  The rest of the Sagehen losses all came in straight set form.

The Hens went up against a tough Trinity (TX) team and fell by the score of 7-2.  The Hens were victorious at #1 doubles with the team of Sheree Schwartz and Kelli Howard and at #3 singles as Kelli Howard got her second win of the day.  Schwartz was in on the tightest match of the day, falling 7-5 in the third set of her #1 singles match.

The Hens swept La Verne 9-0 on the 3rd to remain undefeated in conference play.  The #1 doubles team of Sheree Schwartz and Vicki Chen won easily, 8-1 and all singles matches were won handily in straight sets, including Schwartz's 6-0, 6-0 romp at #1 singles.   


Women's Water Polo         11-8 Overall    2-1 SCIAC
The Sagehens thoroughly dominated Whittier on the 13th, winning 20-11.  Joy Haviland scored 7 goals, Lucia Schmitt tallied 5, and Lindsay Norcott chipped in with 6 of her own.  The Hens scored 6 goals in the first 3 minutes of the second half to pull away from the Poets.  Morgan Sokolow stopped 9 shots between the posts for the Sagehens.

Pomona-Pitzer lost at U.C. Irvine on the 12th, 6-3.  Lindsay Norcott tallied 2 of the 3 Hen goals while Joy Haviland recorded the other.  Morgan Sokolow made 4 stops in net for the Sagehens.  The Hens were up 2-0 after the first period of play but were outscored 5-1 in the second half.

The Hens fell to SCIAC rival La Verne, 7-6 on the evening of the 10th.  Lindsay Norcott led the Sagehen offensive effort with 3 goals while Lucia Schmit, Joy Haviland, and Jacquie Cole each had one.  Morgan Sokolow made 5 saves in net for Pomona-Pitzer.

The Sagehen women started SCIAC play on the 6th and did so by defeating rival Claremont-M-S, 9-8 in overtime.  Fiona Dunbar, Lauren Moore, and Lucia Schmitt all had 2 goals for the Hens.  Morgan Sokolow made 15 stops between the posts, including one in the final minute of overtime to seal the victory for the Sagehens.  

The Hens took on Cal Baptist on the 3rd and lost to the tough Lancer squad, 11-6.  Pomona-Pitzer was blanked in the first half of play but fought back in the second half with 3 goals from Joy Haviland and a goal each from Blair Henderson, Lucia Schmit, and Lauren Moore.      


Golf                                           3-4 Overall    3-4 SCIAC
Pomona-Pitzer defeated Whittier on the 6th at Los Serranos - North, 308-330.  Luc Schuster and Tim McEvoy each came in with blistering 74's on the afternoon to lead the Hen effort.  Ben Hochstein and Drew Staniewski rounded the Hen top 4 with identical scores of 80 on the day.  

The Sagehen team fell to Cal Lutheran by just 5 strokes on the 1st of April, 327-322.  R.G. Manalac was the best performer on the day for the Hens, as he came in with a 78.  Luc Schuster was next in line for Pomona-Pitzer with an 80 on the afternoon at the Red Hill Country Club course.


Men's Track & Field           4-3 Overall      4-3 SCIAC
Pomona-Pitzer's men's track & field team fell to Occidental (104-97), La Verne (121-81) and Claremont-M-S (131-72) Saturday in Eagle Rock to finish its SCIAC dual-meet season at 4-3.

Strong marks were recorded by Richard Cannon in the 800 (1:59.65), Michael Kirtman in the 400 hurdles (56.49), Mark Melief in the high jump (6'0), and Matt Zay in the triple jump (42'2 1/4).


Women's Track & Field     5-2 Overall      5-2 SCIAC
Pomona-Pitzer's women's track & field team defeated Occidental, 102-94, but fell to La Verne (113-84) and Claremont-M-S (132-71) Saturday the 13th in Eagle Rock to finish its SCIAC dual-meet season at 5-2.

Junior Laura Bishop won the 1500 (4:50.89) and 5000 (18:24.66), and sophomore Stefanie McDougall took third in both the 800 (2:18.74) and 1500 (4:55.18). Other strong marks were recorded by frosh Izzy Smith in the 400H (70.01), Gre'Juana Dennis in the long jump (16'4 1/2, the #9 all-time mark for Pomona-Pitzer), and Anna Bruett in the hammer (124'1, the #4 all-time mark for Pomona-Pitzer).
