Ben Komer had a great week in Oxford, Ohio at the NCAA meet.
He recorded two lifetime best efforts in the three
events and established a new school record (:46.16) to place
15th in the 100 yd. freestyle.
He placed 5th in the 50 yd. freestyle
(:20.88) to earn All American honors.
His 100
yd. butterfly time of :51.88 was also a best ever time for
Ben. Ben’s
college swimming career
includes his two time selection as the SCIAC Swimmer
of the Year during the 2000 and 2002 seasons, two individual
event school records ,
and All American honors in 2001 and 2002.

Valerie Stout placed 16th in the 200 Breaststroke to earn a point
for the Sagehens in the NCAA meet at Oxford, Ohio. Stout came
in at 2:26.37 in the race.

|
Pomona-Pitzer fell to Linfield on the the 26th, 6-1. The Hens
lost the doubles point and were defeated in 5 of the 6 singles
matches. J.R. Hall was the lone victor at the #1 singles spot
with his 6-3, 7-6 win. Four of the remaining 5 singles spots
were decided by a third set, and the Hens came up short in each
one.
The Hens hosted Pacific Lutheran and Lewis & Clark on the the
24th and defeated both teams. The Sagehens had a very tight
match with the Lutes of PLU, who knocked off Pomona-Pitzer in the
first round of last year's NCAA tourney. The Hens lost the
doubles point but came back to win 4 of 6 singles matches to clinch
the win. Hen winners were J.R. Hall at #1, Sam Gaines at #3,
Nate Pealer at #4, and Chris Croxton at the #6 spot. Against
Lewis & Clark, the Hens did not drop a set in disposing of the
Pios. Jamie Frank, Chris Croxton, and Mike Benaroya, playing
at #'s 4, 5, and 6, all won their singles matches without dropping a
game.
Pomona-Pitzer was soundly defeated by defending National Champion
Williams on the 21st. The Ephs won 2 of 3 doubles matches to
win the doubles point and then followed by sweeping all 6 singles
matches, dropping only one set along the way. The 3rd doubles
team of Nate Pealer and Jamie Frank provided the lone victory for
the Sagehens on the day.
The Sagehens had a reversal of roles on the 13th. The Hens
have made a habit of losing the doubles point and still finding a
way to win matches. On Wednesday, the Hens finally got the
doubles point in a close match, but this time NYU came back to win
the match by taking 4 of 6 singles matches. Nate Pealer and
Mike Benaroya were the lone singles winners on the day for the Hens
at #'s 4 and 6, respectively. Complete Results
The Men's Tennis squad held off a tough Denison team on the 12th,
4-3. For the fourth time this season, the Hens lost the
doubles point and came back to win at least 4 of the 6 singles
matches to claim the team victory. Singles winners against
Denison were Samir Vora at #2, Chris Croxton at #4, Nate Pealer at
#5, and Jamie Frank at the #6 spot. The Hens also received a
good outing from J.R. Hall and Vora at the #1 doubles

Softball

Pomona-Pitzer lost two games on the 27th, one to Loras and the other
to Cal Baptist. Against Loras, Alicia Juskewycz and Jameela
Hammond each had 2 hits for the Hens, who were unable to produce a
run in the game. In game two of the afternoon, the Hens were
defeated by Cal Baptist, 6-0. The Hens had 2 hits in the game,
and both came off the bat of Amy Bertken.
On the 24th of March, the Hens were swept in two games by the
Lutes of Pacific Lutheran, 11-0 and 15-0. The Hens managed
just 2 hits in the first game and 3 in the second. Stephanie
Lozano and Jocelyn Burke had hits in each game for Pomona-Pitzer.
The Hens fell to Linfield and Plattsburgh State on the 22nd by
scores of 10-5 and 9-4, respectively. Against the Wildcats of
Linfield, Rosa Jimenez led the Hens with a 3-hit effort, while 4
other Hens chipped in with 2 hits apiece. A big 9 run inning
hurt the Hens in an otherwise tight contest. Against
Plattsburgh State, Amy Bertken, Leanne Stein, Jameela Hammond, and
Rosa Jimenez each had 3 hits for Pomona-Pitzer. Monica Belli
and Karen Hamilton split time on the mound for the
Sagehens.
The Hens split two games on the 21st, defeating Colorado College
3-1, and falling to Willamette, 6-1. In the Colorado game,
both Karen Hamilton and Amy Bertken had two hits for
Pomona-Pitzer. Hamilton also scored a run, had an RBI, and
pitched the complete game, allowing just 5 hits and no earned
runs. In the second game, Hamilton was the only Hen with more
than one hit. Diane Durgan had a hit and the sole RBI for
Pomona-Pitzer. Monica Belli pitched the complete game for the
Sagehens, allowing 3 earned runs on 9 hits.
The Hens played two games on the 13th and dropped both contests of
the double header. In the first game, the Hens were blanked by
Bethany, 6-0. Amy Bertken had two of the Hens' 6 hits on the
day. Bethany produced just one more hit that the Hens, but the
5 Sagehen errors did them in. In game 2, the Hens lost a
shootout to Mercy, 20-19. The Hens had 24 hits to Mercy's 17,
but again commit 5 errors in the game, as just 6 of Mercy's 20 runs
were earned. Jameela Hammond and Alison Mathes each had 4 hits
on the day for the Hens. Jocelyn Burke had 5 hits and 5 RBI's,
and Amy Bertken had 3 hits and 5 RBI's in the game.

The Hens swept a double header from Endicott on the 27th, winning
19-3 and 19-5. In the first game, Tyler Burr and Ollie
Morrison led the offensive charge with 3 hits apiece. Burr had
5 RBI's and Morrison had 3 of his own to go along with 3 runs
scored. Spike Einsiedler pitched another complete game,
allowing just 5 hits, and giving up just 1 walk. In game 2,
Jose Cortez and Morrison led the way. Cortez had 3 hits, and
Morrison had a perfect day from the plate, going 4 for 4. Jase
Turner and Bobby Boeche each hit a homerun in the Hen
victory.
The Hens defeated MIT on the 25th by the score of 12-3.
Pomona-Pitzer put 10 runs on the board in the first 3 innings to
take a commanding lead. Rob Ruiz and Luke Smude led the Hens
offensively. Ruiz went 2 for 2 with 2 doubles, 2 RBI's, 3
runs, and 2 walks, while Smude had 3 hits on the day with a double,
2 runs, and 2 RBI's. Sean Gilbert got the win, pitching 4
innings of no hit ball.
Pomona-Pitzer kept rolling with 4 more wins on the 22nd and 23rd of
March. On the first day of the California Invitational, the
Hens disposed of North Central, 5-1, and then UMass Dartmouth,
10-0. Against North Central, Luke Smude and Matt Rager each
had 2 hits for the Hens. Smude also had a walk, 3 RBI's and 2
stolen bases. Jase Turner had a home run for the Hens.
Adam Gardner got the win for the Hens, allowing just one run while
striking out 6.
In the game against UMass Dartmouth, the Hens got on the board early
with a 3 run home run by Alex Siele, who went 3 for 4 on the
day. Luke Smude went 2 for 3 on the day with a home run, 2
runs and a walk. Smude broke the all time Pomona-Pitzer runs
record with his 166th run. Spike Einsiedler gave up hits to
the first two batters of the game, but surrendered no hits after
that, pitching the complete game shutout, striking out 8
batters.
On the 23rd, the Hens pounded Wisconsin-La Crosse, 15-8, and held on
for a tough 8-6 win over C.S. Hayward. Against Wisconsin, Jose
Cortez and Luke Smude stood out among many great offensive
showings. Cortez was 4 for 4 with a home run and 3 runs
scored, while Smude was 3 for 4 with a home run and 5 RBI's.
Jase Turner also had a big day with 2 home runs. Mike Renery
got the win for the Hens, and Alex Smith came in to close the game
out by pitching no hit ball for the final 2 innings.
In the second game against Hayward, the Hens scored a run in each of
the final 3 innings to win 8-6. Bobby Boeche went 2 for 4 on
the day with a home run, 3 RBI's, 2 runs and a sacrifice.
Ollie Morrison hit a home run of his own in the Hens' half of the
ninth. Alex Smith got the win win by pitching 3.2 innings,
allowing a run, a hit, and striking out 2.
The Hens had a very solid showing in the California Classic as they
took 3 of 4 games over the two day event. On day 1, the Hens
fell in their first game to UMass-Dartmouth, 11-7. Jose Cortez
and Matt Rager had 3 and 4 hits, respectively. The Hens took a
narrow 6-5 lead into the 6th inning, but could not hold on for the
win. Pomona-Pitzer got back on track in game 2 on the 16th
with a 15-3 drubbing of Menlo. Matt Rager, Jose Cortez, and
Jase Turner went a combined 7 of 12 in the game with 7 RBI's.
Mike Renery got the win, pitching 6.2 innings, allowing just 6 hits
on the afternoon. In Game 3 of the weekend on Sunday, the Hens
continued their winning ways by beating Ithaca, 11-2. Jose
Cortez and Jase Turner again provided the offense while pitcher
Spike Einsiedler pitched a complete game, allowing just 4 hits,
striking out 6, and not allowing any earned runs. In the final
game of the weekend, the Hens won a slugfest over Linfield,
15-11. Both Jose Cortez and Jase Turner hit their 4th home
runs on the weekend in the game to give the Hens the edge they
needed for their 3rd win in a row.

Tennis
9-3 Overall 5-0 SCIAC

|
The Hen women had a tough weekend at the Fab Five Tournament held at
Washington and Lee University in Lexington, VA. Pomona-dropped
all 3 matches on the weekend bringing their record on the season to
9-3. On Friday, the Hens fell Williams, 6-3. Sheree
Schwartz and Chelsea Heller were the only 2 singles winners for the
Hens at #'s 1 and 5, respectively. The #1 doubles team of
Schwartz and Whitney Henderson also came out victorious. On
Saturday the 30th, the Hens were soundly defeated by Emory,
8-1. The #3 doubles tandem of Betsy Mork and Vicki Chen
provided the only point for the Sagehen squad on the day. On
the final day of the tourney, the Hens were upended by host
Washington & Lee, 6-0. The Hens were swept in three close
doubles matches and in three singles matches. Three other
matches did not finish before the match was called.
The Sagehen women stayed unbeaten with a very tough 5-4 win over
Amherst on the 17th. The Hens lost 2 of 3 doubles matches but
but stormed back to take 4 out of 6 singles matches to clinch the
win. Singles winners for the Hens were Sheree Schwartz at #1,
Kelli Howard at #3, Whitney Henderson at the #4 spot, and Kelsey
Chance at #6.
Pomona-Pitzer had an easy win over Chapman on the 15th of March
to stay unbeaten on the season. The Hens swept the doubles
matches and then dominated in singles play as nobody dropped more
than 3 games in any of the singles matches. Betsy Mork had a
strong showing with a 6-0, 6-0 win at #2 singles.
The Hen women soundly defeated Rochester on the 13th, 8-1.
The Hens swept all 3 doubles matches and won 5 of 6 singles contests
to seal the victory. Kelli Howard and Whitney Henderson were
extended to three sets at #'s 3 and 4, but both held on for the
wins.

Water Polo
9-5 Overall 0-0 SCIAC

|
The Hens won two games on the 27th, soundly defeating both
Macalester and C.S. Hayward. Against Macalester,
Stephanie Stewart and Toby Branz shared game-high honors
with 4 goals each. The Hens outshot the opposition
25-12, holding Macalester to just 2 goals in the game.
In the second game of the day, the Hens rolled over C.S.
Hayward by the score of 18-5. Jacquie Cole and Joy
Haviland each had 4 goals to lead the Hen offensive
effort. Lucia Schmidt and Lindsay Norcott each dished
out 4 assists in the game.
The Hens traveled north for four games on the 23rd and 24th
and came home having gone 2-2. On the 23rd, the Hens
lost to Santa Clara, but defeated Sonoma State. Joy
Haviland was the leading goal scorer against Santa Clara
with 2. Against Sonoma State, Fiona Dunbar and Blair
Henderson led the way for the Hens with 3 goals
apiece. On Sunday the 24th, the Hens were dominated by
Davis 15-3, but then beat U.C. Santa Cruz for the first time
in 5 years to earn the split on the weekend. Against
the tough Aggie squad, Joy Haviland scored 2 of the 3 Hen
goals. Against the Bananaslugs of U.C.S.C.,
Haviland again led the way offensively, this time with 4
goals to pace the Hen effort. Lucia Schmidt and
Lindsay Norcott each chipped in with 2 goals as well.
Morgan Sokolow made 5 saves in net for the Hens.
The Sagehens split two games on the 12th, losing in a
shootout to Bucknell 11-10, and defeating Notre Dame
10-8. Against Bucknell, the Hens clawed back from a
6-1 halftime deficit, but could not hold off the visiting
squad. Joy Haviland scored 5 goals to lead the Hens,
while Lindsay Norcott and Toby Branz each tallied 2
goals. Morgan Sokolow made 5 saves in goal for the
Hens. In game 2, the Hens came back to defeat Notre
Dame behind strong offensive efforts from Toby Branz and Joy
Haviland. Branz tallied 4 goals and Haviland chipped
in with 3. Morgan Sokolow had a great game in the net
with 10 saves in the game.

The Hens defeated Occidental on the 30th, 307-325. The match
was played at Los Serranos-North, and all 4 Pomona-Pitzer players
scored in the 70's. Ben Hochstein and Tim McEvoy led the Hens
with scores of 76 on the afternoon, while Luc Schuster and Joe Gill
came in with 77 and 78, respectively.
The Hens participated in the Cal Lutheran Invitational on the
25th and 26th of March, and finished in 9th place of 15 teams with a
3-round score of 985. Scott Pearsall led the Hens with a 233,
leaving him in 5th place overall. Luc Schuster was next for
the Sagehens with a score of 250, followed by Joe Gill with a
252.
The Hen Golf team went up against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on the
11th, at the Empire Lakes Course, and fell to their rivals
312-304. Scott Pearsall led the Hens with a 76. Luc
Schuster came in with a 78 and R.G. Manalac and Tim McEvoy each
tallied a 79 on the afternoon.

Women's
Track & Field 4-0 Overall 4-0 SCIAC
|
|
|
The Sagehen women participated in the Cal-Nevada Championships on
the 30th of March and finished higher that all other participating
SCIAC teams. The meet was heavily attended by Division I
schools including Fresno State, San Diego State, and UCLA.
Laura Bishop provided the best result for Pomona-Pitzer by finishing
2nd in the 1,500 meter run in a time of 10:06.56.
