Members of the Men's Tennis team competed at the 102nd Ojai
Tournament in Ventura County and the #1 doubles tandem of J.R. Hall
and Samir Vora stood out with an outstanding showing, reaching
the finals of the Men's Divsion III Regional, finally losing to the
#1 team from Redlands.
The Hens wrapped up the dual match portion of their season by
finishing in a 3rd place tie in the SCIAC. Pomona-Pitzer
entered the SCIAC tournament as the lone 3rd place team but lost to
Cal Lutheran in the 3rd place match to achieve the tie.
Earlier in the tournament, the Hens defeated Caltech 4-0 to earn a
spot in the semi-finals, where they fell by the score of 6-1 to
rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Sophomore J.R. Hall was rewarded
with a 1st team All-SCIAC selection for the second year in a row.

The Sagehens finished their 2002 campaign by taking 1 of 3 games
from the Poets of Whittier. In Game 1, the the Hens dropped a
4-2 decision after giving up 3 runs in the top of the 7th
inning. Jocelyn Burke was 2 for 3 in the game with 2
runs. Monica Belli provided the lone RBI as well as pitch the
whole game for Pomona-Pitzer. In Game 2, the Hens got a 3-1
win despite getting only 3 hits in the game. Jocelyn Burke and
Jameela Hammond each had a hit and scored a run. Karen
Hamilton and Burke split time on the mound for the Hens. In
the last game of the year for the Hens, two big innings by the Poets
were too much to overcome as Whittier won 8-0. The Hens got
just 2 hits in the game, from Monica Belli and Rosa Jimenez, and had
3 errors.
Pomona-Pitzer lost 3 games to Occidental over the 19th and
20th. In game 1 on Friday, the Hens were defeated 5-2.
Alison Mathes had 2 of the Hens' 5 hits and Karen Hamilton had both
of the RBI's for Pomona-Pitzer. Monica Belli and Josina Morita
split time on the mound for the Sagehens. The first game on
Saturday saw the Hens come up with 7 hits and 3 runs, but it wasn't
enough to beat the Tigers. Jameela Hammond had 2 of those hits
for the Hens as well as an RBI. Monica Belli and Jocelyn Burke
gave the Hens the other 2 RBI's on the day. Monica Belli
pitched the complete game for Pomona-Pitzer. In game 3 of the
series, the Hens were blanked 9-0. Karen Hamilton and Alison
Mathes provided the only 2 hits for the Hens on the day.
Jocelyn Burke pitched all 5 innings of the game for the Hens.

The Sagehens finished a sweep of the SCIAC with 3 more wins over the
weekend, this time over the Bulldogs of Redlands. The Hens won
by scores of 9-3, 7-6, and 14-1. Game 1 saw Matt Rager go 2
for 5 with a home run and a walk while Spike Einsiedler pitched
another complete game and earned yet another win. In game 2 of
the series, the Hens trailed 6-5 going into the 8th inning but
scored a run in each of the final two innings to get the close win
at home. Ollie Morrison and Rob Ruiz both doubled for the Hens
in the game while Alex Smith earned the win in relief by pitching 2
innings, allowing just 1 hit and no walks. In the final game
of the series, the Hens' bats came alive in a 14-1 win. Four
Saghens (Jose Cortez, Ollie Morrison, Bobby Boeche, and Matt Rager)
had 3 hits in the game. Cortez and Rager each had a home run
for the Hens. Mike Renery got the win for the Hens, scattering
7 hits over his 7 innings of work.
The Hens played a game at Azusa Pacific on the 24th and came home
having won, 9-5. Jase Turner and Tyler Burr led the offensive
attack for the Sagehens. Turner hit a grand slam in the first
inning to give Pomona-Pitzer the early edge. Turner also
scored twice in the game. Burr went 3 for 5 on the day with 2
doubles, a run, and 2 RBI's. Josh Cardwell got the win for the
Hens with 2 innings of work, allowing 2 hits, no earned runs, no
walks and striking out one batter. The game was tied 5-5 after
a 5 run 2nd inning for Azusa, but the Hens scored one run in the 6th
and 2 more in the 7th to seal the win.
On the 19th, the Hens hosted Caltech and soundly defeated the
Beavers, 20-1. Four Hen players (Matt Rager, Jose Cortez, Jase
Turner, and Felipe Aguilar) had 3 or more hits for the Hens on the
day with Turner getting 2 homeruns and Cortez getting one of his
own. Spike Einsiedler got the win for the Hens by pitching 3
innings of middle relief, allowing 1 run on 2 hits with 5
strikeouts.
The Hens took on Whittier on the 16th for an
out-of-conference-play match up and defeated the Poets by the score
of 8-1. Luke Smude led the Hens at the plate with his 3 for 5
performance, hitting a triple, scoring once and tallying 3
RBI's. Matt Rager got the win for the Hens by pitching 4
innings, allowing 1 run on 5 hits, with 1 walk and 5 strikeouts.

Pomona-Pitzer competed in the SCIAC tournament on the 19th and 20th,
finishing 2nd in the event, thus earning a tie for first place in
the conference. During the regular season, the Hens finished
undefeated in SCIAC play. The Sagehens opened up the
tournament with a 5-0 win over La Verne, and in the semi-finals
earned another strong win over Whittier, 9-0. In the finals,
the Hens fell to rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 6-3. The
Athenas won all three doubles matches by very close margins and then
went on to win 3 of the 6 singles matches to earn the team victory
and tournament title. Winning the 3 singles matches for the
Hens were Sheree Schwartz at #1, Kelli Howard at the #3 spot, and
Chelsea Heller at #4.

Water Polo 15-11 Overall

The Hens had a great SCIAC tournament over the weekend,
winning 4 of 5 games in the event hosted by La Verne.
Pomona-Pitzer lost their first contest of the tourney to
Redlands 6-3, but then came back to defeat Whittier 12-4,
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 7-4, La Verne 6-4, and Occidental
7-2. Joy Haviland scored a whopping 12 goals in the
five games for the Hens while Lucia Schmitt added 8 of her
own. Morgan Sokolow made 34 stops in net over the
weekend to help the Hens go 4-1 over the 3 day event.
The Sagehens were defeated by the Tigers of Occidental on
the 20th, 7-5. Joy Haviland scored 3 of the Sagehens'
5 goals on the afternoon with the other 2 going to Blair
Henderson. Morgan Sokolow had 4 saves in net as well
as 5 steals in the game for the Hens.
The Sagehens took on Redlands on the 17th and fell to the
Bulldogs by the score of 6-4. Joy Haviland scored 2 of
the Hens' 4 goals with Lauren Moore and and Lucia Schmitt
accounting for the other two goals. Morgan Sokolow
made 4 stops in net for the Sagehen squad. The Hens
were held scoreless in the 1st and last quarters of the
game.
