| The Hen softball
(2-24, 0-12) squad lost three hard fought games to the Tigers
of Occidental on the 6th and 8th of April. On the 6th,
the Hens fell by the score of 4-2. The Hens held a 2-1
lead going into the 7th inning but the Tigers tallied 3 runs
for the win. Alicia Juskewycz went 2 for 2 for the Hens
with a run, a walk and a stolen base. Sharon Silveira
pitched 6 innings, allowing just one earned run and striking
out one.
On the 8th, the Hens played
two more games against the Tigers, and dropped both contests.
The first game of the day saw the Hens fall by the score of
7-0. Sharon Silveira and Anna Ramsauer both had hits for
the Hens in the game.
Game 2 was another
nail-biter for the Hens as Pomona-Pitzer fell in extra innings
by the score of 4-3. Anna Ramsauer, Sharon Silveira, and
Jessie Coe all had 2 hits for the Sagehens. Silveira
pitched a complete game, going 8 innings, allowing just two
earned runs and striking out 4.

The women's
tennis team (10-4, 6-0) swept visiting UC Santa Cruz on
the 8th of April. The Hens were involved in a couple
tough doubles matches but in the end entered singles play up
3-0. In singles action, no Hen dropped a single set en
route to the win.
The Hens beat rival
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday the 6th. The win marked
the first victory over the Athenas since 1994. The Hens
came out strong as they were able to sweep all three doubles
matches to take a 3-0 lead into singles action. From
there, the Hens split the six singles contests for the 6-3
victory. Winning for the Hens were Betsy Mork at #2,
Meghan Gould at #4, and Whitney Henderson at the 5 spot.
The Sagehens won two
matches over the weekend of the 1st of April Linfield College
and over SCIAC foe Whittier. The Hens defeated Linfield by the
score of 7-2. The Sagehens swept all three doubles matches and
won at #’s 1 – 4 in singles play, all in straight sets.
Sheree Schwartz won at the #1 position, Betsy Mork at #2,
Kelli Howard at the 3 spot, and Meghan Gould at #4.
On the 1st of April, the
Hens improved upon their undefeated conference record with a
win over the Poets of Whittier. The Hens did not have any
trouble in the match as they won easily by the score of 9-0.
No doubles team lost more than 2 games and every singles match
saw the Hens victorious in straight sets. At #6, Katie Seidel
stepped into the line-up and won 6-0, 6-0.
The Hens took on Lewis
& Clark College on the 28th and defeated the Pios by the
score of 9-0. The Hens did not drop more than 2 games in any
of the three doubles matches and lost just 6 games in the 12
total singles sets played. Four Sagehen netters tallied 6-0,
6-0 scores on the afternoon. They were Betsy Mork at #2,
Meghan Gould at #4, Whitney Henderson at #5, and Chelsea
Heller at the 6th spot. Sheree Schwartz and Kelli Howard were
also straight set winners for the Hens at #’s 1 and 3,
respectively.

The men's
tennis squad (11-5, 4-2) took on rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps
on the 10th and lost a very hard-fought match to the Stags by
the score of 4-3. The Hens fell behind early as they
lost the doubles point. The #2 tandem of Mike Benaroya
and J.R. Hall was the only team to claim a victory in doubles.
In singles action, the Hens fell just one match short of a
great comeback. J.R. Hall and Dave Fern, playing #'s 1
and 2, played outstanding singles matches, winning in straight
sets. Mike Benaroya came back from a set down to win his
match in 3 sets at the #5 position.
The Hens traveled to
Chapman on the 4th to take on a tough Panther squad and the
Hens were victorious by the score of 4-3. The Hens had a
rocky start as the host Panthers won the doubles point.
J.R. Hall and Mike Benaroya were the only victors in doubles
at the #2 position. The Hens came back in singles
action, winning at #'s 2, 3, 4, and 6. Dave Fern won in
straight sets at the 2 spot, Samir Vora at 3, Sam Gaines won
in 3 sets at the 5 spot, and Jamie Frank won in straight sets
at 6.
The Hens split two very
tough matches over the weekend, beating Linfield 4-3 and
dropping a contest to Pacific Lutheran by the same score.
Against Linfield on the 30th , the Hens won the doubles point
by winning at #1, 8-5, and at #3 in a tiebreaker. In singles
action, the Hens’ J.R. Hall was victorious at #1 by the
score of 6-3, 6-2. Dave Fern had the match-clinching victory
at #2 singles with scores of 6-7, 6-2, 6-0. Sam Gaines was the
other Hen winner on the day at #4 with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph.
On the 31st, the Hens
dropped a tough match to visiting Pacific Lutheran. The Hens
again came out the gates hard by winning the doubles point
with victories at #’s 1 and 2. The Hens would lose 4 tough
matches in singles play, however, as the Lutes were able to
edge the Hens 4-3. The Hens did get straight set wins at #1
from J.R. Hall (7-5, 6-4) and at #4 from Sam Gaines (6-1,
6-3). Three 3-set matches went the way of the Lutes on the
afternoon.

The men's
baseball squad (18-9, 11-3) traveled to Chapman for a
non-conference matchup with the Panthers on the 10th of April.
The Hens fell to the host squad by the score of 8-3. The
Hens started to rally in the 8th inning but it wasn't enough
to catch the tough Chapman team. Luke Smude had a good
day at the plate for the Hens, going 2 for 4 with a triple, an
RBI, and a run.
The Hens swept a double
header from Cal Lutheran on the 8th of April, bringing them
within just one game of the 1st place Kingsmen. The Hens
won the games by scores of 22-2 and 5-3. In the first
game, the Hens exploded for 23 hits in the game. Jose
Cortez went 4 for 5 in the game with 2 two-run home runs and 6
RBI's. Matt Rager and Alex Siele also left the yard for
the Hens in the game. Adam Gardner got the win for the
Hens, pitching a complete game. In game 2, the Hens were
again sparked by Cortez as he hit another two-run home run in
the game. Luke Smude also had a big day for the Hens,
going 2 for 4 with and RBI and a run scored. Spike
Einsiedler got the win for the Hens and Mike Renery the save.
The Hens traveled to Cal
Lutheran on the 6th for the first game of a 3 game set over
the weekend. The Hens fell to the host Kingsmen by the
score of 8-3. The Hens got up early in the game as they
took a 3-0 into the 3rd inning. The Kingsmen tied the
game at 3-3 going into the top of the 5th and added 5 more
runs over the next 3 innings of play to extend their lead and
hold on to the win. Rob Ruiz and Spike Einsiedler both
had home runs for the Sagehens.
The Hens played three games
against the Poets of La Verne on the 30th and 31st and were
victorious in two of those games. In the first game on Friday
the 30th, the Hens fell at home by the score of 16-2. Both
Bobby Boeche and Jose Cortez hit solo home runs on the day to
give the Hens their only runs.
On the 31st, the Hens
traveled down the street to play a double header for the final
two games of the three game set with La Verne. Game 1 saw the
Hens climb out of an early 5-0 hole to take the game by the
score of 15-7. Rob Ruiz, Spike Einsiedler, and Jose Cortez all
had 3 hit performances in the game and all hit home runs in
the game as well. Cortez hit two home runs in the game. Cortez
had 5 RBI’s on the day while Ruiz knocked 4 in of his own.
Adam Gardner got the win for the Hens, going 8 innings on the
day, allowing 5 earned runs and striking out 6.
In the second game of the
day, the score was much closer but the Hens still came out on
top by the score of 7-4. Bobby Boeche and Ollie Morrison both
had 3 hits on the day for the Hens. Boeche knocked in 3 runs
with his performance at the plate. Jose Cortez was also strong
at the plate, going 2 for 3, hitting his 3rd home run in 2
days. Cortez also walked 2 times in the game. Spike Einsiedler
got the win for the Sagehens, pitching 7 innings, allowing 3
earned runs and striking out 5 batters.

The women's
track & field (1-3, 1-3) team fell to
Claremont-M-S, 135-18, and to La Verne, 96-50, Friday
night at CMS in a
SCIAC 4-way dual meet. The Sagehens had two individual
winners: Laura Bishop won the 1500 in a conference-leading
4:53.64, while Sara Hastings won the pole vault at 9'6".
The team sent a few
individuals to the UC Riverside Invitational Saturday and came
away with some strong marks. The Sagehens travel across Sixth
Street this Friday afternoon for a SCIAC 4-way meet against
CMS, La Verne, and Caltech.
Junior Sara Hastings
demolished the school record in the pole vault by clearing
10'0. Hastings brushed the bar but cleared at 9'6 to set one
record. Then, at 10'0, Hastings soared cleanly over the bar to
up the Sagehen standard by an even foot. Hastings had co-held
the previous record of 9'0 set last year.
Other strong marks for
Pomona-Pitzer included personal bests from Lily Holmes in the
100m (14.93), Madeline Mundt (2:35.20) and Jamie Burns
(2:41.46) in the 800, and Susie Roley in the 1500 (5:15.95).

The men's
track & field (2-2, 2-2) team dropped meets to
Claremont-M-S, 130-33, and to La Verne, 96-67, Friday night at
CMS. Senior Ari Polychronopoulos won the discus at 147'7 to
record the lone Sagehen win. Other strong marks for Pomona-Pitzer
included Dan Wire's 193'11 javelin throw--an NCAA provisional
qualifying mark. Polychronopoulos also threw 45'10 in the shot
put and 168'10 in the hammer. Jonathan Samples clocked 11.09
in the 100m--the #6 all-time mark for Pomona-Pitzer. Frosh
Matt Franck ran the 5000m in 15:22.68.
The team sent its squad to
the UC Riverside Invitational. The Sagehens are gearing up for
Friday's SCIAC showdown at Claremont-M-S Friday where the
three undefeated SCIAC teams will meet head to head: Pomona-Pitzer
(2-0), Claremont-M-S (4-0), and La Verne (4-0), plus Caltech.
At UCR, Jonathan Samples
ran the 100 (11.34) and 200 (23.51), Joe Hartford pole vaulted
a strong 13'0", and senior thrower Ari Polychronopoulos
tossed the shot (43'0), discus (134'1) and hammer (138'10).

The golf
team (3-4, 3-4) competed against Occidental on the 9th of
April and defeated the Tigers by the score of 324-352.
Ben Hochstein was the low man for the Hens with a 75 on the
Annandale course. R.G. Manalac was close behind with an
81 on the day.
The Hens competed against
Chapman and Master's College on the 3rd of April and ended up
victorious over both squads. The Hens (307) were
victorious over Chapman (338) by 31 strokes but by just one
stroke over Master's (308). Luc Shuster was the top Hen
out on the course with a 75. Duke Gray and Ben Hochstein
both came in just behind with 77's on the day.
The Hens competed against
Cal Lutheran on the 29th of March and came up short to the
Kingsmen by the score of 309-294. R.G. Manalac shot an
impressive 71 on the River Ridge course and Ben Hochstein came
in 6 shots behind him with a 77 on the day. No other Hen
shot in the 70's on the day while 5 of 6 Kingsmen were able to
accomplish that feat.

The women's
water polo team (3-8, 0-2) hosted Redlands on the 11th and
came up short to the Bulldogs by the score of 14-5.
Lucia Schmit led the Hens in scoring with 3 goals in the
game. The Hens were able out shoot their opponent by
23-17. Three different Sagehen players came up with 2
steals in the game.
The Hens played 2 games on
on the 7th of April and came up short in both contests.
In the morning, the Hens took on rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps
and fell in a close game by the score of 8-7. Lucia
Scmit was the lone multi-goal scorer with 2 for the
game. Claire Townsend had 13 saves in net for the
game. Blair Henderson and Morgan Sokolow each had 4
steals in the game. Later that day, the Hens took on U.C.
San Diego and lost to the Tritons by the score of 17-5.
Jacquie Cole had 3 goals for the Hens. Claire Townsend
made 8 save in net.
The Hens took on Cal
Baptist on the 28th and fell by the score of 16-10. Lucia
Schmit scored 5 goals on 7 attempts for the Sagehens. Claire
Townsend made 2 saves for the Hens in net.
