The men's basketball team (9-10, 6-2) started the second round of SCIAC play Saturday night with a 83-42 road win over the Caltech Beavers. Eleven Sagehens scored in the game, with Tad DeWald, Travis Bray, and Tom Skjervheim all reaching double figures. DeWald collected 8 rebounds and dished out 3 assists on the evening as well. The Sagehens were able to shoot above 50 % from the floor on the night while holding the host team to 35 % shooting.

The Hens traveled to Whittier last Wednesday night and fell to the Poets by a score of 80-64. Jeremiah Martin led the way offensively for the Hens, as he tallied 20 points on 7 of 13 shooting from the floor and 5 of 8 shooting from the free-throw line. Tad DeWald came in off of the bench to score 12 points the Sagehens. Dylan Nachand scored 7 points and dished out a team-high 5 assists on the evening. For the game, the Hens were held to 38 % shooting from the floor, and 22 % from beyond the 3-point arc (6 of 27).

The Sagehens traveled to Cal Lutheran on Wednesday, January 24th and came up short to the Kingsmen by a score of 67-58. On Saturday the 27th, the Sagehens played host to the Tigers from Occidental and won by a score of 82-70.

The Sagehen squad had beaten the team from Cal Lu 9 straight times up until Wednesday night’s contest. Travis Bray led the offensive charge for the Sagehens with a team-high 15 points to go along with his team-high 5 rebounds, a number also shared by Tyler Velten. Jeremiah Martin poured in 11 points on the night and came up with a game-high 3 steels on the evening. The Hens were held to under 40% shooting from the floor on the evening.

Against the Tigers of Occidental, Jeremiah Martin had game-highs in points (25), rebounds (6), and steals (4). Dylan Nachan also came up with 4 steals on the night as well as dishing out a game-high 6 assists, scoring 10 points and pulling down 5 boards. Freshman Mark Erler went for 15 points and 5 rebounds in 23 minutes of action for the Hens. Travis Bray chipped in with 12 points of his own for the contest as well as grabbing 6 rebounds. The Sagehens shot 48 % from the floor on the night while holding the opposition to under 40 %.

The Sagehen men will next compete at home this Wednesday against Redlands and then at La Verne on Saturday.

The women's basketball team (9-10, 3-4) played host to Whittier on Friday night and fell to the Poets by a score of 55-50. Three Sagehen players scored in double figures on the night. Sojourner Howe had 11 points, while Meghan Gould and Maya Jones each tallied 10. Howe also grabbed 10 boards to tally a double-double for the evening. On the night, the Hens had a tough night shooting the ball as they were held to 18 % from beyond the 3-point arc (2 of 11). This game marked the start of the second round of SCIAC action.

On Tuesday night, the Hens traveled to Redlands and upended the host squad by a score of 77-74. Leading the way for the Sagehens was Sojourner Howe, who scored 22 points on 8 of 16 shooting, including 3 of 7 from beyond the 3-point arc. Gre’Juana Dennis also played a big game for the Hens as she tallied 16 points, grabbed 4 rebounds and dished out 4 assists. In 21 minutes of action, Maya Jones collected 13 points of her own, as well as tallying 4 boards for the contest. Meghan Gould contributed 6 points and game-high 7 assists on the evening. The Hens shot 51 % from the floor on the night.

The Hens defeated Caltech on Tuesday the 23rd of January by a score of 85-32. The Hens also were triumphant over the Leopards of La Verne on Friday the 26th by a score of 61-43.

Against Caltech, Samantha Brown led the team in scoring with 18 points. Autumn Niibu chipped in with 14 of her own and Shannon Wolff, Andrea Levianna, and Christina Downs all had 10 points for the Hens. Downs gathered a team-high 18 rebounds on the night as well. The Sagehens out rebounded the opposition 57 to 32 and forced Caltech into making 36 turnovers on the evening.

Against the squad from La Verne, four Sagehen hoopsters scored in double figures on the night. Maya Jones and Sojourner Howe both had 14 for the Hens and Jaeda dos Santos and Megan Gould chipped in with 13 and 11, respectively. Jones and dos Santos shared team-high honors with 8 rebounds apiece. The Sagehens held the Leopards to 30 % shooting from the floor and 11 % shooting from behind the 3-point line.

The Sagehens next play at Cal Lu before hosting rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.


 

Men's Swimming/Diving Overall: 3-6

Ben Komer and Dusty Baker each recorded season best efforts in their best event in the meet at the University of Redlands. Baker’s 1:59.2 in the 200 yard butterfly is much faster that his mark at this time last season and Ben Komer’s :48.35 100 yard freestyle is the fastest time in the conference to date. The Hens could not match the team depth and balance of the Bulldogs. Coach Gary Troyer noted, “Without divers or distance swimmers, we are not going to win any meets against solid teams like Redlands, but our individual performances and very encouraging.”

During the winter break, the Sagehen squad went 1-4, competing against the University of Puget Sound, Pacific Lutheran, Linfield, Seattle University, Evergreen, and Occidental. The Hens found that victory against the Tigers from Occidental, where Ben Komer won back to back races in the 200 and 50 yard freestyle races. He then came back to win the 100 yard freestyle in the second part of the meet. Matt Mester also won, taking the 200 yard breast stroke in the meet.

This coming weekend, the Sagehens will play host to the Stags from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Diving will begin at 11:00 AM and the swimming will start at noon.

The Sagehen women’s swimming team defeated Whittier soundly and came up just short against the host Redlands squad last weekend.

Christen Parker came up with wins in both the 200 and 500 yard freestyle races, as well as a second place finish in the 100 yard freestyle. Lucia Schmidt won the 200 yard breast stroke as well as the 200 yard individual medley. Lizzy Davis was victorious in the 200 yard butterfly and the 400 freestyle relay team for the Hens was victorious by 3 seconds over the second place finisher.

Like the men’s team, the women traveled north during the winter break to compete against teams from Pacific Lutheran, Linfield, Evergreen, and Seattle. The women also competed at home against Puget Sound and Occidental. The Hen women went 3-1 on the road during that trip, falling only to Seattle University.

The Sagehen women will host the rival Athenas from across the street this weekend with diving beginning at 11:00 and swimming starting up at noon.
