Bi-Weekly Write-up - February 11, 2002  
Men's Basketball             12-8 Overall       7-3 SCIAC
 

Pomona-Pitzer traveled to Occidental on the night of the 9th and upended the Tigers, 66-52.  The Sagehens got a huge game from Mark Erler, who tallied 26 points on the night.  Jeff Quinn-Cane was the only other Sagehen in double figures with 10 points.  Erler also led the team in rebounds and steals with 6 and 2, respectively.  The Hens shot 44% from the 3-point arc on the evening.

The Hens defeated a tough Whittier squad on the night of the 6th, 60-57.  Alex Lloyd hit a jumper with 4 seconds remaining in what was a tied ballgame.  Lloyd led the team with game highs of 19 points and 9 rebounds on the evening.  Mark Erler was the other Hen in double digits with 16 points.  The Hens struggled shooting the ball, connecting on just over 30% from the floor and just over 40% from the free-throw line.

Pomona-Pitzer drove to Pasadena to take on Caltech and opened up the second half of SCIAC play with a convincing 85-33 victory.  Mark Erler led the team with 17 points while Alexander Lloyd and Brandon Wood each chipped in with 16.  Wood also pulled down a game high 9 rebounds on the night.  The Sagehens managed to shoot over 50% from the floor.

The Hens traveled to Thousand Oaks on the 30th and lost a lopsided game to the Kingsmen of Cal Lutheran, 66-42.  Alex Lloyd was the only Hen in double digits with 11 points on the night.  The Hens were held to just 35 % shooting from the floor and made just 9 of 20 free throws on the night.


Women's Basketball        11-9 Overall      8-2 SCIAC
  The Hens swept the season series from rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on the night of the 8th with a 67-48 victory over the Athenas.  Pomona-Pitzer got another big game from Lindsay Hill, who tallied 22 points and 11 rebounds, both game-highs.  Tamara Zakim and Gre'Juana Dennis also had good games with 18 and 15 points, respectively.  The Hens held the Athenas to just 14 % shooting from beyond the 3-point arc.

Pomona-Pitzer improved to an impressive 7-2 SCIAC mark with a road win at Caltech on the night of the 5th.  Five Sagehens (Lindsay Hill, Andrea Lievana, Autumn Niibu, Debbie Birnbaum, Tamara Zakim) scored in double digits in helping the Hens to the 90-41 victory.  The Hens shot just under 50% from the floor, committed only 9 turnovers, and outrebounded the opposition by over 20 boards.

The Sagehen Women improved to .500 on the year and 6-2 in conference play with a road win over the Poets of Whittier on the 1st of February.  The Hens were paced by three tremendous offensive showings as Gre'Juana Dennis and Tamara Zakim each had 20 points while Lindsay Hill tallied 17.  Zakim also pulled down 10 boards on the night.  Leigh Ferrin collected a game-high 11 rebounds.  The Hens shot 46% from the floor in avenging an earlier loss to the Poets.

The Hens improved to 5-2 in SCIAC play on the 29th with a home win over the Tigers of Occidental.  Going into halftime, the score was just 19-8, but a big second half by both teams ended in the final score of 65-53.  Both Tamara Zakim and Lindsay Hill tallied double-doubles on the night with Zakim scoring 25 points and pulling down 10 boards while Hill chipped in with 19 points and 10 rebounds.


Men's Swimming/Diving       3-5 Overall  2-4 SCIAC

The Sagehen men won all but 4 events in dismantling the Poets of Whittier on the 9th.  P.C. Fleming (400 Medlay Relay, 200 Individualy Medley, and 200 backstroke) and Ben Komer (200 freestyle, 50 freestyle, and 500 freestyle) were each in on 3 wins on the day.  David Bates and Neil Bertrando again swept both diving events for the Sagehnens.

The Sagehens won 6 events, set a Haldeman Pool record, and had some great performances in a losing effort against reigning SCIAC champs Redlands on the 2nd of February.  Ben Komer dominated his best event with a huge :21.30 sprint good for a pool record in the 50 free.  Komer currently holds the 3rd fastest time in the nation for that event.  Ben added a lifetime best 100 butterfly (:52.53) for his second victory.  Ben Demarchellier also won two events in lifetime best efforts in the 100 and 200 freestyle events.  Komer and Demarchellier teamed with Justin Greenwood and Lucas Johnson to win the 400 free relay.  Patrick Fleming recorded a season best (:58.83) to win the backstroke event.


Women's Swimming/Diving 7-1 Overall  5-1 SCIAC

The Sagehens soundly defeated Whittier on the 9th in the final dual meet of the season.  Sixteen season best times were clocked by the Hens on the day (Janetta Iwanicki, Marcie Holmes, and Robin Kirschbaum in the 200 free; Erin Hafer in the 100 back; Lucia Schmit in the 100 breast; Jessie Neufelf in the 200 fly; Jennifer Ah-Kee in the 100 free; Valerie Stout and Chelsea Hauge, Jessica Anderson, and Beverly Mielke in the 200 breast; Michelle Adams and Laurel Williams in the 500 free; Liz Widmar in the 100 fly; Jessie Neufeld and Robin Kirschbaum in the 400 IM).

The Sagehen women had a great meet against Redlands on the 2nd of February, winning by the narrow margin of 127.5 to 115.5.  Lucy Keller swam an outstanding race in the the 200 free, winning with a time of 2:01.20, while Jennie Marble followed in a close second place finish with Jacquie Cole coming in third.  The meet came down to the last race, the 400 free relay, where the Hens pulled through.  Alison Davis led off in a :58.9, Lizzy Davis followed with at season best :56.8, Cole swam a quick :56.4, and Elizabeth Widmar finished it off with a season best of her own at :56.62.


Men's Tennis       1-1 Overall  1-0 SCIAC
The Sagehens opened up SCIAC play at home with a 7-0 win over Caltech on the afternoon of the 8th.  The Hens started the match by sweeping the three doubles matches and then proceeded to do the same in singles play without dropping a set.  J.R. Hall did not drop a game in his win at #1 singles while Chris Croxton dropped just one in his first set, playing in the #5 spot.

Softball                  0-3 Overall  0-0 SCIAC
Pomona-Pitzer hosted a double-header with The Master's on the afternoon of the 8th and were defeated both times.  The Hens struggled from the plate, getting just one hit in game 1 from Leanne Stein and two in game 2 from Stein and Karen Hamilton.    

The Sagehens opened up their 2002 season with a close 3-0 loss to Cal Baptist.  The Hens gave up only 3 hits on the afternoon, but were unable to come up with one of their own.


Baseball                  4-1 Overall  0-0 SCIAC
Pomona-Pitzer played their home opener on the afternoon of the 7th and won the game over visiting Westmont in dramatic fashion.  The Hens were down 8-5 in the bottom of the 8th (game was shortened to 8 innings due to darkness) when the rally began.  Ollie Morrison had a base clearing double to tie the game and then Rob Ruiz blasted a three run shot over the right field wall to give the Hens the hard fought victory.  Jose Cortez also had a three run homerun in the first inning for the Hens.  Alex Smith got the win, pitching 2 innings, allowing no hits. 

The baseball squad kicked off its season with 3 wins out of 4 games over the weekend of the 2nd and 3rd of February.  On the the 2nd, the Hens split two games with C.S. Hayward, dropping the first 5-4 and winning the second, 7-4.  Matt Rager went 2 for 4 with a homerun in the first game while Luke Smude and Jase Turner each had three hits in helping the Hens to the game 2 victory.  On Sunday, Pomona-Pitzer swept two games from Menlo College in domination fashion, winning 16-3 and 19-5.  Alan Flores had 3 hits in the first game, while Spike Einsiedler had 3 RBI's, 3 runs, and also pitched 6 very strong innings to get the win.  Game two saw even more offensive production from the Hens.  Jose Cortez had 4 hits, Luke Smude had 5 and Jase Turner and Ollie Morrison each had 2 of the Hens' 21 hits on the afternoon.  Alex Smith pitched 2 shutout innings in relief for the Sagehens.   


Women's Tennis                  1-0 Overall  1-0 SCIAC
The Sagehens opened up the 2002 season with a convincing 9-0 win over Caltech.  No Hen lost more than two games in any one match on the afternoon.  Whitney Henderson and Ginger Wachter each came up with 6-0, 6-0 wins on the day, and the doubles tandem of Betsy Mork and Vicki Chen blanked their opponent 8-0.  Complete Results
