Bi-Weekly Write-up - February 25, 2002  
Men's Basketball            14-10 Overall      9-5 SCIAC
 

The Hens hosted the Kingsmen of Cal Lutheran and handed the opposition just their 2nd conference loss of the year.  The Sagehen win propelled rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps into the NCAA tournament, as the Stags earned the SCIAC Championship by one game over Cal Lu.  Alex Lloyd and Kamau Norman-Terrance led the Hens offensively with 18 and 17 points, respectively.  Tyler Velten chipped in with 8 points and 10 boards for the Hens.  

The Sagehens traveled to La Verne on the 18th and fell to the Leopards in overtime by the score of 71-64.  The Hens took an 11 point lead into halftime, holding the Leos to just 18 first half points, but the home team poured it on in the second half, scoring 43 and earning a trip into the extra period where they outscored Pomona-Pitzer 10-3.  Alex Lloyd and Tyler Velten each had 15 points and 6 boards for the Hens, who were unable to make a shot from the field in the final 5 minute frame. 

Pomona-Pitzer played host to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on the night of the 16th and fell to their rivals by the score of 51-49.  C-M-S was ahead for most of the game until the Hens tied the score at 49 with under a minute to go.  Down by two, the Hens had the ball stolen, and were unable to get a last shot off.  Frosh Alex Lloyd led the Hen effort with a team-high 17 points and game highs of 13 rebounds and 5 blocked shots.  Lloyd also dished out 3 assists on the evening.  The Hens struggled from behind the 3-point arc, shooting just 3 of 20.

The men's team traveled to Redlands on the night of the 13th and came away with a tough road win, 80-76.  Mark Erler and Alex Lloyd each had 16 points on the night to share team-high honors.  Andrew Grant chipped in with 12 points and a team-high 7 rebounds on the night.  The Hens went to the line 43 times on the night, connecting on 63% of those attempts.  The Hens also commit just 10 turnovers in the game.


Women's Basketball      14-10 Overall   11-3 SCIAC
 

The Hens defeated Oxy on the road in overtime on the 20th, 54-51.  The Hen win, combined with the triple overtime loss by Redlands, resulted in a SCIAC Championship for Pomona-Pitzer and a berth in the NCAA tournament.  Gre'Juana Dennis and Tamara Zakim provided nearly all of the offense for the Hens, as they tallied 26 and 17 points, respectively.  Dennis was 4 of 6 from the 3-point arc and 8 of 10 from the free throw line.  

The Sagehens moved into a first place tie in the SCIAC with a 41-34 win over visiting Redlands.  The game saw both teams struggle from the field as both the Hens and Bulldogs shot under 30% on the night.  Tamara Zakim had 12 points and a game high 13 rebounds on the night to spark the Hen effort.  Lindsay Hill chipped in with a double double of her own with 14 points to go with her 10 boards.  

Pomona-Pitzer traveled to Thousand Oaks and fell to the Regals of Cal Lutheran on the night of the 15th.  The 69-50 defeat dropped the Sagehens from their first place tie with Redlands, their next opponent.  Gre'Juana Dennis led the Hens with 17 points on the night, while Tamara Zakim chipped in with 13.  Lindsay Hill was the leading rebounder with 8 in the game.

The Sagehens remained in first place in the SCIAC after a hard-fought 56-55 win over La Verne on the night of the 12th.  Tamara Zakim led the Hens' offensive charge with 19 points on the night.  Zakim also grabbed a team high 7 rebounds.  Lindsay Hill had another great game for the Hens as well, tallying 17 points and collecting 3 steals.  The Hens commit 14 fewer turnovers than the Leopards of La Verne.


Men's Swimming/Diving       3-5 Overall  2-4 SCIAC

The Pomona-Pitzer men placed 4th at the SCIAC championships and senior captain Ben Komer was honored as the top male swimmer of the year by the conference coaches.  This marks the second time that Komer has won the award.  Ben had winning performances in both spring freestyle events and set a new school record in the 100 free.  Four Sagehens finished in the top three places in at least one event, earning All SCIAC honors.  Coach Troyer noted,"It was a great team effort to place 4th with only 9 guys and every one had lifetime best times.  Komer will now prepare for the NCAA Division III meet in March."

The SCIAC Diving Prelims took place over the weekend of 16th and 17th and David Bates placed 5th in the 1 Meter and the 3 Meter competitions to advance to the finals next weekend at Cerritos.  Neil Bertrando placed 7th in both events.  The top 6 divers in each even qualified for the finals.


Women's Swimming/Diving 7-1 Overall  5-1 SCIAC

The Sagehen women finished 2nd in the SCIAC meet with 712.5 points on the day.  Redlands won the meet with 766 points.  Lucy Keller was the winner of the 200 free event as well as the 1650 free.  The Hens' 800 free relay team also won a SCIAC title.  91 season best times were recorded by the Sagehen women on the day, as well as 57 lifetime best swims.  7 NCAA "B" cut swims were recorded by the Sagehens as well.    

In the SCIAC Diving Prelims, Elena Scire advanced to next weekend's finals by placing 8th in the 1 Meter event.  Scire finished 9th in the 3 Meter competition.  The top 8 divers for each event go on to the finals to be held in Cerritos.


Men's Tennis       4-3 Overall  2-2 SCIAC
The Hens played two matches on the 23rd and came up with two wins.  In the morning, the Hens downed Whittier, 7-0.  Three Hens had 6-0, 6-0 wins in the match (Samir Vora at #1, Jamie Frank at #3, and Isaac Silverman in the #6 spot).  Complete Results
In the second match of the day, the Hens had a large win against Bates College, winning 4-3.  The match came down to a third set tiebreaker, in which Mike Benaroya, playing at the # 6 spot, overcame a 4-1 deficit in the tiebreaker to take his match and clinch the victory for the Sagehens.  Also winning in impressive fashion for the Hens were J.R. Hall at #1, Samir Vora at #2, and Chris Croxton at the #4 spot.  Complete Results  

The Sagehens traveled to Redlands and fell to the Bulldogs 7-0.  The match was much closer than the final score indicated as three Hens (J.R. Hall at #1, Nate Pealer at #3, and Jamie Frank at #5) extended their matches to 3 sets.  Samir Vora also played a close match at #2, falling in two tough sets, 6-4, 7-5.  Complete Results  

The Hen squad hosted and defeated Brandeis on the 19th.  The Sagehens got out of the gate slowly, dropping two of three doubles matches to lose the double point.  Pomona-Pitzer came back strong in singles action, winning 5 of the 6 matches to claim the 5-2 victory.  The Hens were victorious at #'s 1 (J.R. Hall), 2 (Samir Vora), 4 (Chris Croxton), 5 (Jamie Frank), and 6 (Mike Benaroya).  Complete Results

Pomona-Pitzer was dismantled by rival CMS on Saturday the 16th.  The Hens put up good fights in all 3 of the doubles matches but were unable to capture any of them, dropping all 3 by the score of 8-6.  In singles play, the Hens closest matches came at #'s 1 and 6.  At #1, J.R. Hall lost in straight sets, 7-6, 7-5, and at the 6th spot, Jamie Frank extended his opponent to three sets before falling 6-4 in the final frame.  Complete Results


Softball                  0-6 Overall  0-3 SCIAC
Pomona-Pitzer fell twice to the Athenas of C-M-S on the 23rd, dropping the contests by scores of 9-4 and 7-3.  Jocelyn Burke and Amy Bertken each had 2 hits for the Hens in game 1.  The game was tied at 3-3 when the Athenas had a 3 run 5th inning to break the game open.  In game 2, Jameela Hammond and Alicia Juskewycz each had a hit for the Hen squad.  C-M-S did their damage early in the game and the Hens could not recover from the early hole.

The Hens took on rival C-M-S and fell to the Athenas 8-0.  Leanne Stein was the only Hen able to get a base hit on the day.  Stein also produced a stolen base on the afternoon.  The game stood at just 1-0 thru 5 innings when the Athenas tallied 7 runs in their half of the 5th.


Baseball                  7-3 Overall  3-0 SCIAC
The Hens traveled to Occidental on the 23rd for the final two games of the series with the Tigers and swept the double header, winning 21-9, and 24-6.  Jose Cortez had two homeruns on the day, while Alan Flores, Luke Smude, and Jase Turner all hit one over the fence.  Smude had 9 RBI's with a grand slam in game 1.  Spike Einseidler chipped in with 3 hits and 4 RBI's in game 1 as well.  Game 2 saw more of the same action with different players contributing.  Jose Cortez and Alan Flores each had 6 RBI's in the game, while Alex Siele had a 4 hit, 2 RBI performance.     

Pomona-Pitzer hosted the Tigers of Occidental and defeated the visiting squad, 9-3.  Frosh Jase Turner had a great day at the plate, going 4 for 4 with a home run and 3 runs scored.  Jose Cortez also hit one out of the park for the Hens.  Spike Einsiedler pitched a complete game for the Hens, giving up just 3 runs on 8 hits, striking out 6 batters, and walking just 2.

The Hens hosted Chapman on the end of a home and home series and again fell to the tough Panther team, this time by the score of 5-2.  The Sagehens got on the board in the first inning on a two run homerun by Jose Cortez, but those would be the only runs of the day for the Hens.  Rob Ruiz and Luke Smude each chipped in with 2 hits on the day for the Sagehens.  The homerun by Cortez tied the Pomona-Pitzer record of 37.  

The Baseball squad traveled to 2nd ranked Chapman on the 15th and fell to the Panthers, 10-1.  The game was just a 2-0 game in the 5th inning when the Panthers went on to score 8 runs in the next three innings of play.  Adam Gardner started the game for the Hens, giving up 7 hits in 6 innings of work.  Alan Flores was the only Hen with 2 hits on the day, while Matt Rager's hit provided the only RBI on the afternoon for the Sagehens.


Women's Tennis                  4-0 Overall  4-0 SCIAC
Pomona-Pitzer continued its fast start to the 2002 season by staying unbeaten in a 9-0 win over Whittier on the 24th.  The Hens swept the doubles matches, dropping only one game in the three pro-sets.  All six singles matches were won in straight sets by the Hens, including 6-0, 6-0 triumphs by Kelsey Chance at #5 and Larraine Salas at the #6 position.  Complete Results

The Hens hosted Redlands on the 22nd and defeated the Bulldogs, 6-3.  The Hens again swept the 3 doubles matches and took 3 of the 6 singles matches to claim the victory.  Winning for Pomona-Pitzer were Sheree Schwartz at #1, Whitney Henderson at #4, and Chelsea Heller at the #5 spot.  Complete Results

The Sagehens stayed unbeaten on the young season as they walked across 6th street and handed C-M-S a 6-3 defeat.  The Hens came out strong with a sweep of the doubles, and went into singles play up 3-0, needing to win just 2 singles matches to claim the team victory.  The Hens claimed 3 singles wins at #'s 1 (Sheree Schwartz), 3 (Kelli Howard), and 4 (Whitney Henderson).  Complete Results 


Women's Water Polo           1-0 Overall    0-0 SCIAC
The Sagehens opened up the 2002 campaign with a win over Cal State San Bernardino, 8-4.  Joy Harland led the Hen effort with 5 goals on the day.  Lauren Moore chipped in with 2 goals and Lindsay Norcott had 1.  The Hens went into halftime up 4-3 in large part due to the  effort of goalkeeper Morgan Sokolow, who made 7 saves on the day.  The Hens scored 5 unanswered goals during one stretch of the game to give them the cushion for the victory.
Golf                                           0-1 Overall    0-1 SCIAC
The Sagehen golf squad opened up the dual match portion their season with a loss to the Bulldogs of Redlands, 325-288.  Joe Gill, Luc Schuster, and Tim McEvoy were the top three Hens, all shooting an 81 on the day.  All 6 Hens shot within 3 strokes of one another.  Two 69's by Redlands proved to be too much to overcome for the Sagehen team.
