Men's Basketball                6-11 Overall     3-3 SCIAC
Pomona-Pitzer fell to cross-street rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on the night of the 1st by the score of 63-55.  The visiting Stags got off to a huge early lead to start the game and the Sagehens could not dig themselves out of the hole.  Mark Erler came off the bench to lead the Hens offensively with 19 points to go with his 9 boards, both game-high efforts.  Andrew Grant added 11 points and Tyler Velten chipped in with 10.  Pomona-Pitzer struggled from the floor on the night, shooting just 29 % on 18 of 62.  The Hens shot just 3 for 21 from beyond the 3-point arc. 

The Sagehens traveled to Pasadena to take on Caltech on the 29th and defeated the host squad by the count of 84-33.  Four different Sagehens scored in double figures for the Hens, led by Gavin Cree and his 13 point effort.  Jason Howie pulled down a team-high 6 rebounds on the night.  The Sagehens outrebounded Caltech 47-25 and shot just under 50% from the floor on the night.

Pomona-Pitzer fell at Occidental on the 25th in a close contest, 51-49.  Thomas Hollo and Jeff Quinn-Cane led the Hens with 12 and 11 points, respectively.  Hollo and Jason Howie shared team-high honors by pulling down 7 boards apiece.  The Sagehens outscored the Tigers in the second half 26-22, but they fell just short when the buzzer sounded.

The Sagehens got their second SCIAC win of the season on the 22nd by defeating the Leopards of La Verne at home, 59-55.  Tyler Velten had a huge night for Pomona-Pitzer, going 6 for 10 from the floor and 8 for 12 from the free throw line, tallying a game-high 20 points on the night.  Velten also pulled down a game-high 9 boards and shared game-high honors with 3 assists.  Jeff Quinn-Cane had a great night as well for the Hen squad, dumping in 15 points and grabbing 7 rebounds.  The Hens outrebounded the Leos 48-36 on the evening. 

Pomona-Pitzer fell to 1-1 in SCIAC play with a home loss to Cal Lutheran, 65-60.  The Hens were paced by Jason Howie, who tallied 15 points on 3 for 5 shooting from the floor and 7 for 7 shooting from the charity stripe.  Howie also shared game-high honors by dishing out 4 assists on the night.  Thomas Hollo was the only other Sagehen in double digits with 12 points to go with his 6 rebounds.  The Hens went into halftime tied at 28, but fell behind early in the second and were unable to complete the comeback.

The Sagehens opened up the SCIAC season with a road win at Whittier, 75-71.  Frosh Thomas Hollo led 4 Sagehens in double figures with a season-high 22 points on the night.  Mark Erler added 13 while Tyler Velten and Jason Howie chipped in with 12 and 10, respectively.  Howie led the team with 9 boards on the night.  A close game for all 40 minutes, the Hens went into halftime down by a point but outscored the Poets by 5 in the second and final frame.  After attempting just one free throw in the first half, Pomona-Pitzer made 16 of 18 charity tosses in the second half.

Pomona-Pitzer hosted the Eagles of La Sierra on the afternoon of the 10th and dominated the visiting squad, 67-47.  Jason Howie was one rebound away from a double-double as he had game high honors with 14 points and 9 boards while also dishing out a team high 5 assists.  Gavin Cree added 12 points while Jeff Quinn-Cane chipped in with 10 points and 7 boards.  The Hens held the Eagles to under 30% shooting from the floor on the afternoon.   

The Pomona-Pitzer men traveled to Concordia on the night of the 7th and fell to the host Eagles by the score of 85-56.  Concordia came into the game as the number 1 ranked NAIA team in the nation.  Jason Howie and Tyler Velten led the way for the Hens, both dumping in 18 points on the night.  Howie went 6 for 10 from beyond the 3 point arc to get his points.  Nobody had more than 4  rebounds on the night for the Hens as the team got out-rebounded 52-31. 

In their second game of the Occidental Classic on the 4th, Pomona-Pitzer fell to Swarthmore, 72-63.  Tyler Velten led 3 Sagehens in double figures with 18 points.  Jason Howie and Thomas Hollo each chipped in with 15 points.  Hollo also pulled down a team high 9 rebounds on the night.  The Hens shot 35% from the floor on the night, while Swarthmore knocked down 41% of their shots. 

The Hens opened up the Occidental Classic with a loss to St. Joseph's on the 3rd, 55-47.  Jason Howie and Thomas Hollo were the two leading scorers for the Sagehens, with 18 and 10 points, respectively.  Jeff Quinn-Cane led the team in boards with 6 on the night.  The Sagehens struggled from beyond the 3-point arc, shooting 5 of 21 and got to the free throw line a total of 8 times on the night.  The first half ended with the Hens down just 2 points, but St. Joseph's outscored the Hens in the second half, 34-28. 

The Sagehens played host to the Saints of St. Scholastica (MN) on the afternoon of the 31st and won by the score of 72-61.  Pomona-Pitzer got down early in the game but took the lead halfway through the first half.  They maintained that lead throughout the rest of the game, despite runs by the Saints that closed the gap to within 2 or 3 points numerous times.  The Hens made their free throws at the end to close out the contest.  Tyler Velten led 3 Sagehens in double figures, tallying 19 points and 7 boards.  Jason Howie added 17and 4 assists while frosh Thomas Hollo chipped in with 13 points and 7 boards.  The Hens made 21 of 29 free throws on the night and shot just under 50 % from the floor. 

Pomona-Pitzer hosted the Eagles of Biola on the night of the 14th and fell to the visiting NAIA squad by the final score of 53-43.  The Hens went into halftime down by just one point, but got outscored by 9 in the second half.  Gavin Cree led the Hen effort on the night, tallying 17 points on 6 of 12 shooting from the floor.  Cree hit 5 of 9 three point attempts on the evening.  On the night, the Hens shot 9 of 24 from behind the 3 point arc.  Tyler Velten pulled down a game high 7 rebounds for the Sagehens.

Pomona-Pitzer traveled to Irvine to take on Division I U.C. Irvine on the night of the 7th, in front of 3,500 fans.  The Anteaters had their way with the Hen squad, winning by the score of 91-23.  Irvine scored the first 25 points of the game and ended up holding the Hens to 12 % shooting from the floor on the night, while shooting 51 % themselves.  The Hens committed 27 turnovers in the game and the Anteaters turned those turnovers into 42 points on the evening.  Frosh Edward Wexler-Beron led the Hen effort with a team high in points (6) and a game high in rebounds (7).

The Sagehens dropped both contests at the David Wells Classic over the weekend of the 29th and 30th.  On Friday night, the Redhawks of R.P.I. defeated the Hens by the score of 71-56.  Frosh Edward Wexler-Beron led the team in scoring with 14 points.  He also pulled down 6 boards and blocked a shot on the night.  Gavin Cree was the other Sagehen in double figures as he chipped in with 12 points.  Tyler Velten had a team-high 8 rebounds on the night.  The Hens had a tough night from behind the 3-point arc, shooting 5 of 23. 
In game 2 of the tournament on Saturday night, the Hens ran into a tough squad from Lewis and Clark and fell by the count of 73-55.  Two freshmen led the way for the Hens on the night.  Edward Wexler-Beron and Thomas Hollo tallied 14 and 10 points, respectively.  Hollo had a team-high 7 boards and a blocked shot as well.  Gavin Cree had a game-high 5 assists on the night.  The Sagehen squad struggled to get to the free throw line on the night, making just 6 trips, all in the first half of play. 


Women's Basketball         2-12 Overall     1-5 SCIAC
Pomona-Pitzer dropped a tough contest at home to Whittier on the night of the 31st of January, 54-51.  The Hens were up late in the game but Whittier climbed back to take the lead and the game.  The 6 available Sagehens were once again led by the efforts of Tamara Zakim.  Zakim tallied 21 points on 9 of 14 shooting from the floor.  Frosh Alexandra Schaible came off the bench to chip in with 14 points.  Zakim also had a game-high 11 rebounds on the night.

The Hens dropped to 1-4 in the SCIAC on the night of the 28th with a loss at home to the Leopards of La Verne, 75-46.  Tamara Zakim led the Hens offensively with 14 points, the only double figure totaled by a Sagehen on the night.  Zakim also blocked 4 shots on the night.  Caroline Crocker pulled down a game-high 14 boards to go with her 9 points in a solid outing for Pomona-Pitzer.  The Sagehens got in trouble by turning the ball over 25 times during the contest.  

Pomona-Pitzer dropped an overtime contest on the night of the 24th to rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 73-69.  Four different Sagehens scored in double figures.  Shelag Cooley, Tamara Zakim, and Monica Archuleta all had 17 for Pomona-Pitzer.  Betty Chernack chipped in with 12 of her own.  Zakim also pulled down a game high 12 rebounds on the night.  On the evening, the Hens shot a stellar 47 % from the floor.

Pomona-Pitzer got its first conference win of the young SCIAC season with a home victory over Cal Lutheran on the 21st, 67-53.  Tamara Zakim again paced the Hen offensive effort, tallying a game-high 23 points and 8 boards in 36 minutes.  Lindsay Hill was the only other Hen in double digits as she chipped in with 12 points and a game-high 9 rebounds.  Pomona-Pitzer shot just over 50 % from the floor on the evening.

The Hens played on the road at Occidental on the 17th and fell to the host Tigers, 53-40.  Tamara Zakim was the lone Hen in double digits with 14 points to go with her 13 boards.  Betty Chernack chipped in with 8 points and 12 rebounds.  Shelag Cooley also contributed 8 points for the Hens.  Pomona-Pitzer did manage to outrebound the Tigers by 50-40, but shot just under 25 % from the floor on the night. 

Pomona-Pitzer opened its SCIAC title defense with a road loss at Redlands on the night of the 14th.  The Bulldogs used a strong second half to defeat the Hens by the score of 50-37.  Tamara Zakim tallied more than half of the Hen points on the night with 20.  That game-high honor was coupled with another game-high of 12 rebounds.  Lindsay Hill was next in line for the Hens, as she chipped in with 12 points in the contest.  No other Sagehen player had more than 2 points.  For the game, the Sagehens shot 25 % from the floor.

The Sagehens got their first win of the season on the 4th but defeating visiting SUNY New Paltz, 72-46.  Lindsay Hill led 4 Sagehens in double figures with 18 points on the afternoon.  Tamara Zakim chipped in with 16 points and 7 boards, while Alexandra Schaible had 12 points, and Shelagh Cooley had 10.  The Hens made 26 of 39 free throws in the game and shot 50 % from the floor.  The tough Pomona-Pitzer defense held New Paltz to just 24 % shooting from the floor.

The Sagehens hosted Holy Family College (PA) on the 2nd and lost by the score of 72-44.  The damage was done in the first half as the visiting squad went into halftime with a commanding 44-16 lead.  Pomona-Pitzer equaled Holy Family in the second half, however, as both teams tallied 28 points.  Leading the way for the Sagehens was Tamara Zakim, as she shared game high honors with 14 points and 9 rebounds.  Shelagh Cooley had a solid game for the Hens as well, tallying 9 points and 6 boards.  The Hens shot just 27 % from the floor while Holy Family shot just under 50 % on the afternoon.

Pomona-Pitzer fell at home to Cal Baptist on the night of the 13th, 51-33.  The Hens got down early in the contest as they went into halftime down 29-12.  They were not able to recover from the early deficit despite a stronger 2nd half.  Tamara Zakim was the lone Hen in double figures as she tallied 14 points as well as a game high 7 rebounds on the night.  For the second game in a row, the Hens shot below 30% from the floor.

The Sagehens hosted Biola on the 10th and fell to the Eagles by the score of 63-45.  Gre'Juana Dennis led the Hen effort with 17 points on 5 of 20 shooting from the floor.  Tamara Zakim also tallied double figures for Pomona-Pitzer with 12 points to go along with her 7 boards.  Caroline Crocker pulled down a game high 13 rebounds on the night.  The Hens struggled from the floor as a team on the night, shooting just 23%, making just 14 of 60 attempts, and going 0-6 from beyond the 3-point stripe.

Pomona-Pitzer traveled to Chapman on the night of the 5th and fell to the Panthers by the score of 59-44.  The Hens shot 35 % from the floor on the night and got to the free throw line just 3 times in the contest.  Leading the way for the Sagehens was Tamara Zakim with 22 points on 11 of 19 shooting from the floor.  Zakim also pulled down 6 boards and blocked 3 shots.  Shelag Jane-Cooley was the other Sagehen in double figures with 12 points.  Caroline Crocker pulled down a game high 10 rebounds on the night for the Sagehens. 

The Sagehens dropped 2 contests at the David Wells Classic over the weekend of the 29th and 30th.  In the first contest on Friday the 29th, the Hens dropped a tough game to the Bananaslugs of U.C. Santa Cruz, 70-64.  Tamara Zakim had an incredible game for the Hens, however, tallying 34 points on 15of 19 shooting from the floor.  In addition to her game high point total, she also pulled down a game high 7 boards and had a blocked shot.  Gre'Juana Dennis chipped in with 13 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists for the Hen squad.
On the second day of the tournament, the Hens played the 14th ranked Carleton team, and fell by the score of 74-47.  Gre'Juana Dennis led the Hen effort with 20 points on the night to go with her 7 boards and 3 steals.  Tamara Zakim tallied 15 points and 5 boards, and frosh Caroline Crocker had a team-high 8 rebounds on the night.  For the second time in 3 games, the Sagehen squad was shutout from behind the 3-point arc.

Pomona-Pitzer opened up the 2002-2003 season with a road loss at La Sierra on the 26th, 71-57.  Tamara Zakim and Gre'Juana Dennis provided much of the scoring for the Hens, as they tallied 22 and 11 points, respectively.  The two also led the team in rebounds as Zakim pulled down 7 and Dennis grabbed 6.  Dennis also had a game high 4 assists on the night.  The Hens were unable to sink a shot from behind the 3-point arc in the contest, going 0-3.  The Hens shot a solid 49% from the floor, however. 


Men's Swim/Dive               Overall: 4-4   SCIAC: 2-3

Pomona-Pitzer fell at home to La Verne on February 1st by the score of 123-92.  The Hens won 3 of the swimming events on the afternoon.  The team of Alex Jakle, Ben Demarchelier, Andy Vonasch, and Glenn Anderson took the 200 Medley Relay.  Demarchelier and Vonasch had solo wins of their own, claiming the 200 Free and the 200 Individual Medley, respectively.  David Bates took both the 1 and 3 meter diving competitions.

Pomona-Pitzer soundly defeated the Poets of Whittier on the 25th, 155-32.  The small Whittier team could not compete, allowing Pomona-Pitzer to take every event in the lopsided contest.  Ben Demarchelier had a good swim in the 100 Fly and Adam Demaray had solid Breaststroke swims in the relay as well as in the 100.

The Sagehens came up short to the Stags of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on the 24th, 132-94.  The Hens took the first diving event and followed with a victory in the Medley Relay for an early lead but could not stay with the Stags who took all 5 freestyle events, the second diving event, and the 200 Back.  The top efforts for Pomona-Pitzer came from Alex Jakle and his leadoff backstroke in the medley relay and Patrick Fleming's win in the 200 Fly.

The Pomona-Pitzer men defeated Occidental on the 18th by the score of 112-92.  Andy Vonasch and Ben Demarchelier were both triple winners on the day.  They began their winning ways as teammates on the victorious 400 Medlay Relay Team, alongside Alex Jakle and Glen Anderson.  Vonasch then went on to win the 200 Individual Medley and 200 Breast while Demarchelier claimed the 50 and 100 Freestyle events.  David Bates won both the 1 and 3 meter diving events for the Sagehen squad. 

Pomona-Pitzer fell in the SCIAC opener to Caltech, 116-106.  The Sagehens won 7 of the 11 swimming events, but Caltech made up for that with numbers, collecting many 2nd and 3rd place finishes.  Alex Jakle again led the way for Pomona-Pitzer, winning the 200 Free, 100 Back, and 500 Free.  Andy Vonasch was a double winner on the day as he took the 400 I.M. and the 100 Breast.   

The Sagehens dominated Lewis & Clark on the 14th of January, 123-34.  Pomona-Pitzer won all events except the last one of the meet.  Alex Jakle led the way for the Hens with 3 wins on the day.  He claimed the 1650 Free, the 100 Back, and was part of the victorious 400 Medley Relay Team with Patrick Fleming, Adam Demaray, and Robert Wertheimer.  Andy Vonasch also had a strong day for the Hens, winning the 200 Individual Medley and the 500 Free.

Pomona-Pitzer defeated Colorado College on the 6th, 155.5-119.5.  Frosh Alex Jakle won the 200 Free, the 100 Back, and was also in on another win with the 200 Medley Relay team with Ben Demarchelier, Andy Vonasch, and Glenn Anderson.  Vonasch was also a winner in the 50 Breast, the 100 Breast, and the 100 Individual Medley.  Demarchelier had a big individual day as well with wins in the 50 Free, 100 Free, and 50 Fly.  Glenn Anderson won the 50 Back and Patrick Fleming won the 100 Fly for the Sagehen squad.  David Bates won both diving events for Pomona-Pitzer.

The Sagehens participated in the Speedo Cup over the weekend of the 5th, 6th, and 7th.  The meet provided the Hens with an opportunity to swim against some tough Division I and II opponents.  Coach Troyer commented on the weekend by saying, “We got a very much improved performance with a short rest taper and our overall team times are very encouraging for this time of the year.  Our stroke swimmers posted big drops in Fly, Breast and Back”.  
The Hen’s  top efforts came from flyer, PC Fleming (2:08.18), Alex Jakle (Back- :56.4/ 2:03.70) and Andy Vonasch (Breast- 1:01.21/ 2:14.23).  Jakle also posted a solid 5:03.4 in the 500 which represents a personal best by 3 seconds.  Sprinter, Ben Demarchelier looked strong in the 100 fly with a season best time of :55.72.  Distance swimmer Steve Hooper is the new “iron man” with the 200 fly and distance free events.  His 2:10 in the 200 fly Saturday was a season best.  The swimmers will continue to work out until the end of finals week and will return to train over the semester break in early January.


Women's Swim/Dive         Overall: 8-0   SCIAC: 5-0
Pomona-Pitzer hosted the Leopards of La Verne on February 1st and had no problems in staying undefeated on the season.  The Hens won the meet by the final count of 166-68.  Getting the meet started were Elana McDermott, Lizzy Davis, Lucia Schmit, and Jennie Marble as they combine to win the 200 Medley Relay.  Jessie Neufeld was next in line with a win in the 1650 Free.  Neufeld also went on to claim the 100 Butterfly.  Valerie Stout took the 200 Free in a time over 10 seconds faster than the next best finisher.  In the 200 I.M., Lucy Keller raced to a win while Cherise Saito and Kathleen Foley won the 100 Fee and 100 Back, respectively.  Finishing the day for the Hens were McDermott with a win in the 500 Free, Schmit in the 100 Breast, and the team of Janetta Iwanicki, Saito, Stout, and Davis in the 400 Free Relay.

The Sagehens dominated the Poets of Whittier on the 25th, taking every single event and winning by the final score of 197-34.  Valerie Stout and Elana McDermott again had great days for the Hen squad.  Stout started out by claiming the 200 Medley Relay with teammates Kathleen Foley, Joanne Sheng, and Janetta Iwanicki.  She then went on to win the 100 Breast as well as the 400 Individual Medley.  McDermott claimed both the 100 Back and the 500 Free.

The Sagehens hosted rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on the 25th and held off the Athenas by the score of 131-112.  Pomona-Pitzer won 8 of the swimming events on the night.  Swimming to victory for the Hens were the 400 Medley Relay team of Kathleen Foley, Michelle Adams, Valerie Stout, and Jennie Marble.  Elana McDermott claimed the 1650 Free as well as the 200 and 500 Free events.  Stout also claimed two races of her own, the 200 Breast and the 200 Individual Medley.  Jessie Neufeld took the 200 Fly and Kathleen Foley raced to a win in the 200 Back.

Pomona-Pitzer swam over the Tigers of Occidental on the the 18th by the score of 182-61.  Kathleen Foley was a triple winner on the day, taking the 50 Free, 200 Back, and the 400 Medley Relay alongside teammates Lucia Schmit, Janetta Iwanicki, and Michelle Adams.  Jennie Marble was also in on 3 wins with her victories in the 200 Free, 100 Free, and as a member of the 400 Free Relay Team with Iwanicki, Lizzy Davis, and Cherise Saito.  Annie Lindberg won the 1 meter diving event for the Hens.

The Sagehen women soundly defeated Caltech on the 15th by the final score of 179-62.  Pomona-Pitzer won all but one swimming event on the day.  Lucia Schmit was a double winner in the meet, claiming the 400 I.M. as well as the 100 Free.  Elana McDermott also swam to two victories, winning the 100 Free and the 500 Free.  Valerie Stout claimed the 100 Breast for the Hens. 

Pomona-Pitzer dismantled Lewis & Clark on the 14th of January, 163-36.  Every event was won by a Sagehen on the day in taking the squad to a 3-0 record on the season.  Two different Sagehens were in on 3 wins on the day.  Elana McDermott had another strong showing by taking the 1650 Free, 200 Free, and the 400 Medley Relay with teammates Jessie Neufeld, Lucia Schmit, and Valerie Stout.  Stout was also a triple winner on the day.  Along with her medley win, she claimed the 200 Individual Medley and the 100 Breast. 

The Sagehens dominated Colorado College on the 6th, 185-115.  Kathleen Foley had a great day for Pomona-Pitzer, winning the 50 Back, the 100 Back, and the 100 Individual Medley.  She was also in on another win with the 200 Medley Relay team that also consisted of Joanne Sheng, Valerie Stout, and Janetta Iwanicki.  Stout and Sheng both had other wins on the day as well, with Stout claiming the 50 Breast and Sheng winning the 50 Fly.  Elana McDermott was also a double winner on the day with victories in the 1000 Free and 500 Free.  Also winning races for the Hens were Lucy Keller (200 Free), Jessie Neufeld (100 Fly), and Lucia Schmit (100 Free). 

The Sagehen women participated in the Speedo Cup in Irvine, a 3-day event including many top Division I and II schools.  It was an exciting weekend for the Hens, as the women produced 31 season best times and 4 lifetime best swims.  Elana McDermott had two NCAA qualifying swims with a 5:08.19 in the 500 Free and a 17:44.06 in the 1650.  Swimming lifetime bests for the Hens were Jennie Marble in the 200 Free, Sara Ball in the 100 Breast, Alexis Dougherty in the 200 Back, and Jessie Neufeld in the 200 Back.

Softball                                Overall: 0-2    SCIAC: 0-0
The Sagehens fell at home to Chapman on the 1st of February, 6-0.  The Panthers got off to an early 3-0 lead and then tallied 3 more runs late in the game.  Emily Helliesen led the Hens at the plate with a 2 hit performance but it wasn't enough to get the Hens on the board.  Also adding hits for Pomona-Pitzer were Leanne Stein and Jameela Hammond.  Traci Kutaka and Monica Belli split time on the mound for the Sagehen squad. 

Pomona-Pitzer opened up its season on the 25th of January with a defeat at the hands of Cal Baptist, 6-0.   Starting pitcher Monica Belli pitched 3 solid innings for the Hens, allowing just one earned run.  The game entered the 5th inning with Pomona-Pitzer down just 1-0.  The Hens were unable to collect a hit on the afternoon.

The Sagehens opened up the 2003 campaign on the 1st of February with a 12-10 win over the visiting Master's squad.  Sophomore Jase Turner led the offensive charge for Pomona-Pitzer as he went 3 for 4 from the plate with 2 home runs, 5 RBI's, 3 runs, and a walk.  Matt Levinson and Brad Carmody also hit home runs for the Hens.  Alex Smith got the win in relief for Pomona-Pitzer, pitching 4 innings, allowing 4 hits and 2 runs while striking out 3 batters.
