Men's Basketball

Overall: 17-9     SCIAC: 12-2

Pomona-Pitzer could not overcome a 36-15 halftime deficit, and fell to Trinity of Texas 65-53 in the second round of the Division III NCAA Tournament on Saturday. Kamau Norman-Terrance led the Sagehens in scoring with 16 points, including 4-9 from three-point range. In the second half, the Hens rallied, shooting 9 for 17 from beyond the arc, and scoring 38 points. The gap was too great however, and the 2004-2005 season came to an end. Congratulations to senior Kamau-Norman-Terrance on a great season and a great career.

The Sagehens defeated the University of La Verne 72-59 to clinch their second straight conference title. Chaz Turner led all scorers with 24 points, and David Knowles added 13 points and seven rebounds in the win. With the win, the Sagehens recieve an automatic berth in the 2005 NCAA Division III Championships beginning March 3. To view the championship bracket please visit www.ncaasports.com.

Ed Wexler-Beron scored 20 points on 9 of 14 shooting as the Sagehens defeated Cal Lutheran 67-63 to remain in first place in the conference with one game left to play. David Knowles added 14 points and 6 assists Alex Lloyd chipped in with 11 points and 6 rebounds. On Thursday, the Sagehens wrap up the regular season at home against La Verne at 7:30 pm.

David Knowles led the Sagehens in scoring with 16 points as they defeated the Whittier Poets 60-55 on Saturday. The Hens jumped out to a 40-26 halftime lead, and withheld a Poet charge for the victory. Ed Wexler-Beron chipped in with 14 points, and Kamau Norman-Terrance and Tom Hollo each added 10 points in the win.

After leading 27-22 at the half, the Sagehens scored just 18 points in the second half, and fell to the Stags of CMS 52-45. The Stags surged  behind the strong post play of Brian Jolly (7-11 fg, 16 points), and clutch shooting of John Parsons (14 points). The Sagehens were led by Chaz Turner (5-6 fg, 12 points), and David Knowles (11 points, 7 rebounds, 4 steals).

Shooting 56% from the field, the Sagehens extended their winning streak to eight games with a 77-36 win over Caltech on Saturday. Ed Wexler-Beron scored 12 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in 20 minutes, and Alex Lloyd chipped in with 10 points on 4 of 5 shooting. On Wednesday the Sagehens host rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 7:30 pm.

Facing the team responsible for the Sagehens only conference loss, Pomona-Pitzer pulled away from Occidental College for a 69-57 win. This is the seventh win in a row for the Sagehens, who were led by Alex Lloyd's 22 points and 4 blocks.

Tom Hollo scored 37 points, fourth on the all-time list as Pomona-Pitzer defeated the University of Redlands 125-117 on Saturday night. In front of a packed and vocal Voelkel Gymnasium crowd, the Sagehens scored a school record 125 points behind a solid press break and 24 point from Alex Lloyd, and 14 points and 10 assists from David Knowles. The Sagehens now have a six game winning streak and are 7-1 in SCIAC play.


Women's Basketball

Overall: 11-14     SCIAC: 4-10

Alex Schaible tipped in the winning basket with 4 seconds remaining to give the Sagehens a 59-58 win over La Verne on senior night. Shelagh Cooley scored 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Betty Chernack scored 7 in their final games.

Shelagh Cooley scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and Cynthia Ting chipped in with 10 points as the Sagehens fell to Cal Lutheran 81-55 on Monday night. Trailing 49-20 at halftime, the Hens charged back, outscoring the Regals 35-32 in the second period. On Wednesday, the Sagehens wrap up their season at home against La Verne at 7:30 pm.

The Sagehens could not overcome a 36-20 halftime deficit against Whittier College, and fell to 67-47 to the Poets. Caroline Crocker led the Hens with 10 points and 9 rebounds, and Betty Chernack added 9 points on 4-6 shooting.

Cynthia Ting  scored 13 points to lead the Sagehens, but it was not enough as the Hens fell to the Athenas of CMS 65-51. Caroline Crocker had eight rebounds and seven points, and Christina Hwang had eight rebounds in the loss. On Friday the Hens visit Whittier for a 7:30 pm game.

Caroline Crocker grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds tying her for fourth on the Pomona-Pitzer All-Time list, as the Sagehens defeated Caltech 68-43 on Saturday. Betty Chernack led the Hens with 15 points, and Christina Hwang added 12 points in the victory. On Tuesday, the Sagehens host CMS at 7:30 pm

Despite a double-double (11 points, 13 rebounds) from Alana Casner, the Sagehens squandered a 25-21 halftime lead, and fell to the visiting Tigers of Occidental 53-45. Pomona-Pitzer shot just 22% from the field in the second half, and 25% for the game. Occidental did not fare much better, shooting 28.6% from the field for the game.

The Bulldogs of Redlands out rebounded the Sagehens 50-30, and came away with a 70-48 victory over Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday night. The Sagehens were unable to recover from a 29-18 halftime deficit, despite Caroline Crocker's 15 points.


Men's Swimming & Diving

Overall: 4-4     SCIAC: 4-3

The Sagehen men capped the 2004-2005 season with a great meet at SCIAC Championships. The men finished fourth with the meet coming down to the last relay. In the end, the men came home with a new school record in the 200 Medley Relay, 12 Pomona-Pitzer Top Ten times, 32 lifetime best swims, and over 50 season best swims. The list of All-SCIAC swimmers includes: Glenn Anderson, Nick Douglas, P.C. Fleming, Mike Song, and Andy Vonasch.


Women's Swimming & Diving

Overall: 5-3     SCIAC: 5-2

The Sagehen women completed another successful season finishing 3rd in the conference. The women capped off the season with a successful championship meet in Cerritos. A few of the highlights included Lucy Keller’s victory in the 500 Freestyle, two NCAA qualifying times, 9 Pomona-Pitzer Top Ten times, 41 lifetime best swims, and over 60 season best swims. The list of All-SCIAC swimmers includes: Christine Bell, Laura Condon, Julia Goldstein, Lucy Keller, Meredith Lee, and Jennie Marble.


Baseball

Overall: 4-5     SCIAC: 2-2

The Sagehen's stopped a two-game losing streak by defeating Whittier College 16-3 at home on Sunday. Jase Turner went 5 for 6 with 9 RBI's including a 3 run home run. Sam Whitehead pitched 5 innings and did not allow a run while striking out 5 and walking only 1.

Ben Shanker went 4 for 4 at the plate with 2 RBI's, and Jase Turner went 3 for 4 with 2 RBI's as the Sagehens defeated the University of La Verne 9-5. Giving starting pitcher Kyle Buika a five run cushion early, he went 4 2/3 innings including three scoreless innings. Natty Miller came on in relief and pitched 4 1/3 innings without allowing a run.

The second time around proved much more competitive, as the Sagehens lost a close game to Chapman University, 5-4 on Thursday. Kyle Buika pitched six strong innings, striking out five, and giving up three runs. Alex Cushman went 2 for 4 with an RBI, and Ben Shanker went 2 for 3 with one run scored. The game was decided in the bottom of the eighth, when Chapman's Tyler Dean led off the inning with a game-tying home run, and then leftfielder CJ Castillo hit a two-out triple to put the Panthers up for good.

Despite four strong innings from freshman Michael Joannides, including four strikeouts, the Sagehens fell to visiting Chapman 19-6. The Hens gave up nine runs in the seventh inning, and six in the eighth to put the game out of reach. Catcher Felipe Aguilar went 3 for 4, and right fielder Alex Cushman went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI's.


Softball

Overall: 0-5     SCIAC: 0-3

The softball team could only manage 2 total runs during their series against Cal Lutheran. In the first game of their double-header  with Cal Lutheran on Saturday, the Sagehens fell 7-1. Leanne Stein went 2 for 2 with 1 RBI, and Catie Camacho went 1 for 3. In the second game, the Hens fell 20-1. Pitcher Erin Kahle gave up 7 runs (6 earned) in the first inning, as the Regals of Cal Lutheran posted 10 runs in the inning. At the plate, Kahle fared better, going 1 for 2. Kindra Wilson went 2 for 3, and Katie Mathews went 1 for 2 with an RBI.

In the conference opener, the Sagehens gave up 12 runs, all unearned before the game was called after five innings, losing to Cal Lutheran 12-0. Terra Bennett and Katie Mathews recorded the only two hits for the Hens, who look for revenge on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 pm.


Men's Tennis

Overall: 2-4     SCIAC: 1-2

Winning two out of three doubles matches, the Sagehens entered the singles portion of the match up 1-0 versus Green Mountain College, and battled to a 6-1 win. Jeff Jablonski was victorious at number one singles, and Nate Pealer won in straight sets at number 2 singles. At the three spot, freshman Blake Phillips pulled out a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 win. At number five singles, Don Richards won 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. Ben Kaufman cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win at number six singles.

The Sagehens notched their first win of the season, defeating Caltech 6-1 on Saturday. The team swept the doubles, and earned straight set victories at the numbers 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6 positions. On Thursday, the Sagehens host Green Mountain College at 2:00 pm.

Playing their second match in as many days, the men's tennis team was defeated by Chapman University 7-0 on Friday. The number one doubles team of Jeff Jablonksi and Neil Patel fell in a tight doubles match, 9-8 (7-2). At number three singles Patel won the first set 6-2, but then fell 7-6 (7-2) in the third set. On Saturday, the Sagehens travel to Caltech in search of their first win.

The men's tennis team couldn't overcome a slow start, and lost to Cal Lutheran 7-0 on Thursday in a match rescheduled due to rain.

The Saghens were swept in doubles, and could not recover, falling 4-3 to the Occidental College Tigers on Saturday. Sophomore Jeff Jablonski was victorious at number one singles, and freshman Blake Phillips pulled out a 6-2, 7-6 (7) win at number three singles. At number five singles, sophomore Neil Patel won 6-3, 6-3.

The men's tennis team opened up the 2005 season with a 5-4 loss to Westmont College on Saturday. Using the nine point format employed by the NAIA, instead of the seven point format, the Hens won at number two doubles, and numbers one, five, and six singles. Sophomore's Neil Patel and Don Richards emerged with an 8-6 victory at two doubles. At the number one singles spot, sophomore Jeff Jablonski defeated Burke Marold 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. Freshman Blake Phillips rallied from one set down to defeat JB Shiller 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 10-6 (super tiebreaker). At number six singles, Patel was victorious after his opponent retired at 3-6, 6-3. On Saturday, the Sagehens host Occidental College at 9:30 am. 


Women's Tennis

Overall: 1-1     SCIAC: 1-1

The Sagehens evened their record at 1-1 after a 9-0 win over visiting Caltech on Saturday.

The women's tennis team fell to Cal Lutheran 8-1 on Friday. On Saturday they host Caltech at 9:30 am.


Women's Track & Field

Overall: 0-0     SCIAC: 0-0

Pomona-Pitzer's women's track team opened the season at Saturday's Cal Poly Pomona Bronco Invite. The Sagehens, glad to begin competing after having Feb. 19's home all-comers rained out, performed well against Cal Poly Pomona, CSU Dominguez Hills and a club team of strong sprinters.

Individually, frosh Emily Bockmon threw the hammer 93'7" in her first attempt at the event to record the #10 all-time mark for Pomona-Pitzer.
Bockmon finished fourth overall in the meet. Frosh Elaine McGlaughlin pole vaulted 7'6" to record the #6 all-time mark for Pomona-Pitzer. She finished second in the meet.

The Sagehens are preparing for the first SCIAC competition on Friday, March
11 at Claremont-M-S.
