Overall: 30-11 SCIAC: 18-3
The Sagehens went 1-2 at the West Regional held at Chapman over the weekend
of the 15th thru 17th of May. Chapman won the double elimination event and
advanced to the Division III World Series. The Hens fell to George Fox in
Game 1 by the score of 4-2. Marc Mason had 2 of the Hens' 5 hits on the
day while Jonas Swyer and Robert Ruiz each had a hit and an RBI. Adam
Gardner pitched 7 innings for the Hens, allowing 3 earned runs on 11 hits while
striking out 6. The Hens rebounded from their opening loss with a 5-0 win
over St. Norbert. Mike Renery pitched a 3-hit shutout and the Hens hit two
home runs to stave off elimination. Jose Cortez led off the 7th with his
19th home run of the season and Jase Turner hit the other home run in the second
inning. Renery did not allow a hit over the final 6 innings to improve to
7-3 on the season. In the third game of the regional for the Hen squad,
the host Chapman Tigers rallied to win by the score of 5-2, eliminating Pomona-Pitzer
from post-season play. Chapman tallied 5 runs in their final two at bats
to overcome a 2-0 late inning deficit. Starter Alex Smith went 7.1 innings
for the Hens. Smith did not allow a run for the first 6 innings.
Jose Cortez, playing in his final collegiate game for Pomona-Pitzer, hit his
Division III career record-tying 70th home run in the first inning. It was
also Cortez' 20th home run of the season. Cortez was named a 1st team
All-American selection.
Pomona-Pitzer swept its final SCIAC series of the year over Occidental over
the weekend of May 2nd and 4th. The three wins gave the Hens the
conference title outright and a berth into the NCAA Western Regional to be held
at Chapman over the 15th, 16th, and 17th of May. In the first game of the
Oxy series, the Hens pounded out 16 hits in a 13-0 win. Sam Whitehead led
the Hens at the plate on the day with 3 hits, a home run, 2 runs, and 4 RBI's.
Mike Renery had a great day on the mound, pitching 7 innings, allowing no runs,
giving up just 2 hits while striking out 9. In game 2 of the series, the
two teams combined for 28 hits in a 15-11 Sagehen win. Both Brad Carmody
and Jase Turner had 3 hits and 2 RBI's for Pomona-Pitzer. The Tigers
closed to within one run in the top of the 8th, but the Hens came back with a
3-spot in the bottom of the inning to complete the scoring for the game.
Nathaniel Miller got the win in relief for the Hens, pitching 2.1 innings, while
Alex Smith got the save, pitching 2 innings of 2 hit ball. In the final
game of the series, the Hens unleashed for 24 hits in a 24-6 romp over the
Tigers. Sean Gilbert had a monster day at the plate, going 5 for 6 on the
day with a home run, 3 runs scored and 5 RBI's. Jose Cortez had a 4 hit
day as he hit a home run as well, scored 4 times, and batted in 3. Cortez'
home run was his 18th and put him atop all Division III players in the nation at

The Hens defeated Chapman on the 30th of April by the score of 8-4.
Pomona-Pitzer got down 2-0 early in the game but tallied 3 runs in the bottom of
the 3rd and never looked back on the way to the win. Both Jase Turner and
Felipe Aguilar had 3 hits on the day for the Hens while both Rob Ruiz and Jose
Cortez had home runs for the home squad. Adam Gardner got the win on the
mound for the Sagehens, pitching 7 strong innings, allowing just 2 earned runs
on 8 hits while striking out 3 batters.
The Sagehens tallied 46 runs over their 3 game sweep of the Redlands Bulldogs
over the weekend of the 25th and 26th. Pomona-Pitzer pounded out 22 hits
in the 19-6 victory in game 1. Felipe Aguilar's day at the plate
definitely led the way, as he went 6 for 6 on the day with 4 RBI's, a double,
and 3 runs scored. Rob Ruiz and Jase Turner both went yard for the
Sagehens. Adam Gardner got the win on the mound for the Hens, pitching 7
innings, scattering 9 hits, allowing 2 runs and striking out 5. The hit
barrage kept coming in Game 2 of the series as the Hens pounded out 13 more in a
12-8 win. The Hens were down 7-1 going into the 5th inning when they put a
7-spot on the board to take control of the game. Sam Whitehead, Marc
Mason, Brad Carmody, and Jonas Swyer all had multi-hit games for the Hen squad.
Alex Smith got the win for the Hens, pitching 5 and a third innings. In
the final game of the series, the Hens tallied 11 runs in the 5th and 6th
innings en route to a 15-5 win. Jose Cortez and Brad Carmody each had 3
hits on the day. Mike Renery got the win for the Sagehens, pitching 6
innings, giving up just 5 hits while striking out 7.
Pomona-Pitzer took on Azusa Pacific on the 23rd and fell to the Tigers and
former coach Paul Svagdis, 6-1. The Hens got on the board first in the 4th
inning, but the Azusa squad scored 6 runs in the following two innings to claim
the game. The Hens were held to just 2 hits on the game.
The Hens finished their game with Claremont-M-S on the 16th which was
suspended on the 4th due to darkness in the 11th inning. The Hens won the
game in the top half of the 14th when Rob Ruiz drilled a 3 run shot over the
left-center fence. In the bottom of the 13th, the Stags had the bases
loaded with nobody out, but Josh Cardwell pitched the Hens out of that jam.
Pomona-Pitzer swept three games from Caltech over the
11th and 12th of April. Game 1 saw the Hens win by the
score of 28-1. The Hens scored in every inning except
the 4th. Brad Carmody and Matt Williams both had 3
hits on the day for Pomona-Pitzer. Williams added 3
runs, 3 RBI's, and walked 2 times. Josh Cardwell got
the win on the mound for the Hens, pitching 2 innings,
allowing just 1 hit, and striking out 3. In Game 2 of
the series, the hits kept coming for the Hens in a 16-1 win.
Sam Whitehead had 3 hits and 2 RBI's while Jase Turner added
2 hits, 3 runs, and 3 RBI's. Alex George got the win
for the Hens by pitching 4 innings of 2 hit ball. Game
3 saw the Hens pitch a 17-0 shutout by committee.
Felipe Aguilar had the biggest day at the plate for the
Hens, going 4 for 5 with a triple, 2 runs, 4 RBI's and a
walk. Kevin Cook got the win on the mound for the
Hens, allowing no runs, 3 hits while striking out 5 batters.
The Hens fell to Chapman at home on the 10th by the final
of 14-2. Pomona-Pitzer came up with only 3 hits on the
day while surrendering 19. The Hens also struggled in
the field, making 4 errors. Jose Cortez provided the
lone highlight for the Hens with his solo blast in the 6th
inning.
The Sagehens took on cross-street rival Claremont-M-S
over the weekend of April 4th and 5th and came away with 2
wins and a tie. On Friday the 4th, the Hens and Stags
played to a 4-4 tie until the game had to be called due to
darkness after 11 innings. The game will only be
finished if its completion will have an effect on the
conference title. In the game, both Jase Turner and
Jose Cortez hit long balls for the Hens. Mike Renery
got the start and went 7 innings, allowing 8 hits and 2
earned runs while striking out 3. In the 2nd game of
the series, the Hens won 8-7 with a run in the bottom of the
11th. The Hens needed to put a 3-spot on the board in
the bottom of the 9th just to take the game into extra
frames. Jase Turner and Brad Carmody both had big days
at the plate for the Hens. Turner was 2 for 4 with a
home run, 2 runs and 2 RBI's. Turner's home run won
the game in the last of the 11th. Carmody was 3 for 6
on the day with a home run, 2 runs scored and 2 RBI's.
Adam Gardner pitched 8 strong innings for the Hens and Josh
Cardwell got the win by pitching the 11th inning. Game
3 saw the Hens come from 5-1 down to win 7-5. Jose
Cortez had just one hit in the game, but it was a big one.
Down 5-1 in the bottom of the 5th, Cortez' 3 run shot
brought the Hens back into the game. Brad Carmody and
Jonas Swyer each had 3 hits for the Hens while Tyler Burr
had a good game as well, going 2 for 4 with a home run.

Pomona-Pitzer got swept in a tough 3-game series against
visiting Cal State Hayward over the 27th, 28th, and 29th of
March. Game 1 on Thursday saw the Hens lose a 9-2 7th
inning lead to drop the game 13-9. Marc Mason and Brad
Carmody each had 2 hits for the Hens on the day. The
Hens put back to back 4 spots on the board in the 4th and
5th to get a 9-1 lead, but failed to score the rest of the
game. In game 2 of the series, the Hens fell by the
count of 10-3. Felipe Aguilar and Marc Mason each had
2 hits on the day, with one of Aguilar's hits leaving the
park. Four different pitchers got time on the mound
for the Hens, but the Hayward bats couldn't be stopped as
they pounded out 19 hits on the afternoon. In game 3
of the 3 game set, the Hens fell by the score of 13-4.
The score was knotted up at 2 until the 5th inning when
Hayward crossed the plate 7 times to pull away with the
contest. The Hen bats came alive in the game as they
combined for 12 hits, but the Pomona-Pitzer squad had a
tough time crossing the plate.
On March 22nd, Pomona-Pitzer upended both UW-LaCrosse and
defending DIII National Champion Eastern Connecticut.
Against LaCross, the Hens used a big 4 run 6th inning to
break a 5-5 tie and pull away. Felipe Aguilar had a
big day at the plate for the Hens, getting 3 hits and 3
RBI's on the day. Brad Carmody continued his great
season, going 2 for 5 with 2 runs and 5 RBI's. Jeff
Lamb got the win for the Hens, pitching 5 innings, allowing
2 earned runs and striking out 4. In the second game
of the day, the Hens defeated Eastern Connecticut by the
score of 4-1. Jase Turner and Sam Whitehead each had 2
hits for the Hen squad. Turner also crossed the plate
two times. Mike Renery pitched 7 great innings for the
Hens, allowing just 1 earned run on 3 hits, while striking
out 8 batters.
On March 21st, the Hens took on and defeated both Keene
State and UMass-Dartmouth. The 11-5 win over Keene
State included home runs from Jose Cortez and Sean Gilbert
and a 2 hit, 2 RBI performance from Jase Turner. Keene
State tallied all of their runs in the top of the 9th.
Adam Gardner started the game for the Hens and allowed just
4 hits in 7 innings, striking out 12. In the 2nd game
of the day, the Sagehen squad outlasted UMass-Dartmouth,
3-2. Jose Cortez and Sam Whitehead sparked the offense
for the Hens. Cortez went 4 for 4 on the day with a
home run, a double, 2 RBI's and a walk. Whitehead had
a 3 hit performance, an RBI, a run, and a sacrifice.
Josh Cardwell got the win on the mound for the Hens,
pitching 7 strong innings, allowing the 2 runs on 7 hits.
The Hens swept two games on the 16th of March over Keene
State and Ithaca. The Sagehens defeated Keene State by
the score of 9-0. Brad Carmody and Jase Turner
provided much of the offensive firepower as the two combined
for 4 hits and 7 RBI's. Mike Renery pitched 5 strong
innings for the Hens, allowing just 3 hits while striking
out 7. Josh Cardwell pitched 2 perfect innings to
close out the game. In the second game of the day, the
Hens faced off against Ithaca and won 13-0. Sam
Whitehead and Robert Ruiz had big days at the plate with
Whitehead going 3 for 4 with 2 RBI's and Ruiz knocking in 5
runs on 2 hits. Alex Smith and Adam Gardner split time
on the mound for the Hens, allowing a combined 5 hits on the
day.
Softball
Overall: 0-33 SCIAC: 0-18
The Sagehens were swept by Occidental in a three
game series to close out the 2003 season. In game 1, Erin Kahle and Alex
Schaible each had two hits to lead the Hens offensively. Monica Belli
knocked in a run for the Hens. Leanne Stein also had a hit for Pomona-Pitzer.
Alex Schaible pitched into the 7 inning for the Hen squad. Game 2 saw the
the Hens get just one hit, that off the bat of Erin Kahle. Monica Belli
and Marni Scotten each got time on the mound for the Sagehens. In the 3rd
and final game of the series, the Hens matched Occidental's hit total with 6,
but could not put enough of those together to get any runs across the plate.
Erin Kahle again led the Hens at the plate with 2 hits on the day. Alex
Schaible pithced the entire game for the Hens, allowing just one earned run on
the day.
The Regals of Cal Lutheran took 3 games from Pomona-Pitzer
over the weekend of the 11th and 12th. The Hens
displayed some of their best hitting of the year over the 3
game series, reaching base safely 24 times. In game 1,
the Hens' 4 errors proved to be costly as just one of the
Regals' 7 runs was earned. Leanne Stein and Emily
helliesen each had 2 hits for the Sagehens. Jameela
Hammond added a hit and an RBI. Alex Schaible pitched
2.2 innings of hitless relief for the Hens. Game 2 saw
Erin Kahle provide the most offensive spark for the Hens as
she went 2 for 3 with an RBI in the game. Dara Sievers
added a hit and scored a run for Pomona-Pitzer.
Schaible and Monica Belli split time on the mound for the
Sagehens. Game 3 saw the Hens lose 8-2, but outhit the
Regals, 10-9. Only 2 of the Regals' 8 runs were
earned. Erin Kahle, Emily Helliesen, Jameela Hammond,
and Leanne Stein all had 2 hit games for the Hens on the
day. Belli and Schaible again shared pitching duties
for Pomona-Pitzer.
Pomona-Pitzer was swept by La Verne in a 3-game series over
the weekend of April 4th and 5th. Game 1 saw the Hens
unable to produce a hit. Three errors hurt the Hens as
pitcher Monica Belli, who pitched 1.1 innings, allowed 6
runs overall but only one of them was earned. In Game
2, Alex Schaible and Courtney Buchanon each got a hit for
Pomona-Pitzer, but the Hens were unable to cross the plate
against the tough Leopard squad from La Verne. Marni
Scotten and Alex Schaible split time on the mound for the
Hens. Jameela Hammond had the sole hit for the Hens in
the third game of the series as the Hens dropped that
contest, 8-0. Monica Belli pitched the entire game for
Pomona-Pitzer.
The Hens were swept by Redlands over the weekend of the 28th
and 29th. Game 1 saw the Hens lose a close contest,
3-1. Pomona-Pitzer got their run in the 7th, but the
rally stopped short for the Hens. Erin Kahle and Traci
Kutaka both had hits for the Sagehens. Marni Scotten
and Alex Schaible each got 3 innings on the mound for the
Hens, and each allowed just 1 earned run. Game two of
the series saw the Hens go hitless in the 9-1 loss.
Leanne Stein scored the lone run for Pomona-Pitzer. In
game 3 of the series, the Hens fell by the count of 10-1.
Erin Kahle, Leanne Stein, Monica Belli, and Dara Sievers all
had hits for Pomona-Pitzer. Sievers' hit scored the
lone run for the Sagehens.
On March 26th, the Hens fell to Willamette and Hayward.
In game 1 against Willamette, the Hens lost by the count of
10-2. Miranda Martin and Emily Helliesen each had 2
hits for the Sagehen squad, which combined for 7 hits in the
game. Jameela Hammond had a hit and a run scored for
the Hens as well. Marni Scotten pitched the complete
game for Pomona-Pitzer. In game 2 of the day, the Hens
fell to a tough Hayward team, 11-0. Courtney Buchanon
and Emily Helliesen provided the only 2 hits in the game for
the Hens. The Hens allowed just two earned runs on the
day, but were hampered by 5 errors in the field. Alex
Schaible and Monica Belli both got time on the mound for
Pomona-Pitzer.
The Hens played two more Sunwest Tourney games on the 22nd,
and fell in both contests. In the 1st game, the Hens
lost to Dominican, 5-0. Stephanie Lozano, Erin Kahle,
and Monica Belli each had a hit for the Sagehens.
Traci Kutaka and Alex Shaible split time on the mound for
the Hens. In game 2, the Hens dropped a slugfest with
Oregon Tech, 11-10. Pomona-Pitzer pounded out 14 hits
on the day, a season high. Four errors hurt the Hen
cause on the day, as the three Sagehen pitchers combined to
give up just 5 earned runs on the day.
The Hens dropped
two Sunwest Tourney contests on the 21st of March. In
the 1st game of the day, the Hens fell to Dominican, 8-0.
Emily Helliesen provided the lone Sagehen in the game.
Alex Schaible and Marni Scotten shared time on the mound for
the Hens. In the 2nd game of the day, the Hens fell in
a close 5-4 contest to Notre Dame(CA). Pomona-Pitzer
surrendered 3 runs early and then came back, coming up short
with a rally in the last of the 7th. Traci Kutaka had
a great day at the plate for the Hens, going 3 for 3 with an
RBI. Monica Belli pitched the entire game for Pomona-Pitzer,
allowing just 2 earned runs.
Pomona-Pitzer dropped two contests on the 11th at the
Sunwest Tournament. The Hens fell 8-0 to Bethany in
the early game and 16-6 to St. Rose in the late contest.
Against Bethany, Dara Sievers went 2 for 2 from the plate
while Leanne Stein and Emily Helliesen each had one hit for
the Hens. Monica Belli pitched all 4 of the innings,
giving up just 2 earned runs on 8 hits. Against St.
Rose, the Hens tallied a season high 6 runs on 6 hits, but
St. Rose crossed the plate 16 times, including an 8-spot in
the 7th to run away with the victory. Alex Schaible
had 2 hits for the Hen squad while Courtney Buchanon, Emily
Helliesen, Jameela Hammond, and Dara Sievers all had one hit
apiece. Marni Scotten, Monica Belli, and Alex Schaible
all shared time on the mound for Pomona-Pitzer.
Men's Tennis
Overall: 10-13 SCIAC: 5-5
David Frankel and J.R. Hall were both invited to the NCAA III National
Individual Tournament held at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN.
The top 32 players in the nation make up the small field. Both Hall and
Frankel were ousted in the first round of the tourney, dropping matches to the
#'s 1 and 2 players from Emory, the NCAA team champion. Both matches were
very tightly contested. Frankel fell 7-6 in the third set, while Hall
dropped his match, 7-6, 6-4.
At the Ojai Tournament, both David Frankel and J.R. Hall solidified their
positions amoung the west's best. Hall made it to the quarterfinals before
bowing out while Frankel lost in the semi-finals to eventual champion, Amir
Marandy.
The Sagehens finished 4th in the SCIAC Tournament held at home over the
weekend of the 18th and 19th of April. Pomona-Pitzer took on and defeated
Caltech in the first round by the score of 5-0. Samir Vora had the most
convincing win of the day at #2 singles, 6-0, 6-2. In the semi-finals, the
Hens fell to eventual SCIAC Champion Claremont-M-S by the the score of 6-1.
The Stags won all three doubles matches. At #'s 1 and 2, the scores were
8-6 and 9-7, respectively. In singles play, David Frankel was the lone Hen
to claim a victory at the #1 spot. Jamie Frank, Sam Gaines, and Mike
Benaroya all played tightly contested matches at #'s 4, 5, and 6. The Hens
fell to Redlands in the 3rd place match, 5-2. David Frankel and J.R. Hall
were the lone victors for the Hens, winning at #'s 1 and 2. Hall and
Frankel were both named to the All-SCIAC first team while Samir Vora was a
second team selection.
The Hens fell to national power U.C. Santa Cruz on the
13th, 7-0. David Frankel was the only Hen player to
extend his opponent to 3 sets on the day, dropping his match
7-5 in the third set. Jamie Frank took his opponent to
two tiebreakers before dropping his match.
Pomona-Pitzer took on SCIAC rival Cal Lutheran on the
12th and fell to the Kingsmen in a closely contested match,
5-2. The Hens won at #1 doubles with the tandem of J.R.
Hall and David Frankel, but lost the doubles point. In
singles action, the Hens got wins from J.R. Hall at #2 and
from Samir Vora at the #3 spot.
Pomona-Pitzer traveled to the Southeast over the 4th,
5th, and 6th and came back home having won 1 of 3 matches.
On the 4th, the Hens defeated Sewanee (TN) by the score of
4-3. Pomona-Pitzer took two of three doubles matches
and went on to win half of the six singles matches for the
win. Winning for the Hens were David Frankel at #1,
J.R. Hall at #2, and Samir Vora at the #3 spot. On the
5th, the Hens fell to Rhodes, 4-3. The Sagehens won
the doubles point but only claimed two of the six singles
matches, getting victories from Samir Vora and Jamie Frank.
On the final day of the trip, the Hens were outplayed by
Emory in Atlanta. The Eagles blanked the Sagehens,
7-0. No Hen player took a set from their opponent on
the afternoon.
The Hens continued with a busy stretch of matches on the
31st of March with a home loss to Gustavus Adolphus, 5-2.
Mike Benaroya and Sam Gaines got a great win at the #3
doubles position while Samir Vora and Nate Pealer came up
just short by falling at the #2 spot, 9-8. In singles
action, the Hens got outstanding performances from David
Frankel at #1 and from Samir Vora at the #3 position, both
wins.
Pomona-Pitzer fell to a tough Middlebury squad on the
28th, 6-1. The Hens got just one win on the day, that
coming from J.R. Hall at the #1 singles position, 6-2, 6-3.
The Hens were swept in doubles play and Jamie Frank was the
only Hen, other than Hall, to extend his opponent to 3
sets in singles action.
The Sagehens came up with a big regional win over Pacific
Lutheran on the 27th, 5-2. The Hens won the doubles
point by taking win at #'s 1 and 2 and then went on to win
the top 4 singles matches. Getting wins for the Hens
were David Frankel at #1, J.R. Hall at #2, Samir Vora at the
3 spot, and J.B. Wogan at #4. Nate Pealer combined
with Samir Vora at #2 doubles to clinch the doubles point
with a 9-8 victory.
Pomona-Pitzer took on defending National Champion
Williams College on the 26th and fell by the score of 5-2.
The Hens came up with wins at the #1 doubles position and
and at #'s 1 and 2 singles. David Frankel won a 3 set
match at the #1 spot and J.R. Hall continued his outstanding
season with a win at the #2 spot. Hall and Frankel
combined for a win at #1 doubles.
The Hens took on Coe College on the 25th of March and
fell in a tight 4-3 contest. Coe eked out the doubles
point and held on to win the top 3 singles matches.
Jamie Frank, Chris Croxton, and Sam Gaines won singles
matches for the Hens at #'s 4, 5, and 6, respectively.
Mike Benaroya and J.B. Wogan were the sole doubles team to
win as they triumphed at the #3 position, 8-2.
Women's Tennis
Overall: 15-8 SCIAC 8-2
In the NCAA quarterfinal match held at Redlands, the Hens suffered an 8-1 defeat
at the hands of 2nd seeded Washington and Lee. Betsy Mork was the lone
victor for the Hens at the #3 position. Washington and Lee went on to
finish in 2nd place, falling to Emory in the finals.
At the West Regional, the Hens defeated the Bulldogs of Redlands for the
second time in as many weeks. This time, however, the match was more
tightly contested as the Hens held on for the 5-4 triumph. Redlands took
two of three doubles matches to open up the match, but Pomona-Pitzer stormed
back to take 4 of the 6 singles matches to claim the win and a berth in the NCAA
quarterfinals. The Hens won their singles matches at #'s 2 thru 4 with
Whitney Henderson at #2, Betsy Mork at #3, Vicki Chen at the 4th spot and Lauren
Calton at #6. At #4, Chen entered her third set as the dual match was
knotted at 4-4. She won her 3rd set 6-2 to help the Hens earn the victory.
At the Ojai Tournament over the weekend of April 24th thru the 27th, the
Sagehen women had some very strong performances. In singles play, the
Hens' #1 player, Kelli Howard, advanced to the semi-finals of the women's
independent college draw which includes players from Division II and NAIA
schools. In the doubles draw, Howard teamed with Whitney Henderson to win
the event in straight sets over a team from Pt. Loma Nazarene.
Over the weekend of April 18th and 19th, the Hens repeated as SCIAC
Champions. The Sagehens began the tournament by making quick work of
Caltech in the opening round, 7-0. The Hens did not drop a set en route to
the win. In the second round, also on the 18th, the Hens took on the
Bulldogs of Redlands and won by the final score of 6-3. Pomona-Pitzer
swept all 3 doubles matches convincingly and then held on for the win by
splitting the 6 singles matches. Kelli Howard, Whitney Henderson, and
Betsy Mork won their matches at #'s 1, 2, and 3, respectively. The win
over Redlands sent the Hens to the finals for a matchup with cross-street rival
Claremont-M-S. The Hens again swept the doubles matches and dropped
just 2 singles contests for the 7-2 win and SCIAC crown. Betsy Mork and
Lauren Calton were impressive in their singles wins, dropping only 1 game
between them. The win earned the Hens a berth in the NCAA West Regional
tournament.
The Sagehens lost just their 2nd SCIAC match of the season
with a 6-3 setback to Cal Lutheran. The Hens took two
of the six singles matches and the #3 doubles match with the
tandem of Vicki Chen and Kelsey Chance. Kelli Howard
and Betsy Mork won in singles play at #'s 1 and 3,
respectively.
Pomona-Pitzer lost to a tough Trinity team
on the 11th, 6-3. The Hens, who have been strong in
doubles play all year, lost all three matches to the Tigers
and split the singles matches to finish with the 6-3 final.
In singles play, the Hens won at #'s 1, 2, and 3 with Kelli
Howard, Whitney Henderson, and Betsy Mork.
The Sagehens defeated Northern Colorado on the 6th, 6-3.
The Hens again came out strong in doubles action, winning
two of the three matches and gaining the edge going into
singles action. In the singles matches, the Hens got
wins from Kelli Howard at #1, Betsy Mork at #2, Kelsey
Chance at the #4 spot, and from Kim Brettshcneider at #6.
Pomona-Pitzer fell in a close 5-4 match with C.S. Los
Angeles on the 5th of April. The Hens won two of the
three doubles matches but just two of the six singles
matches. Vicki Chen and Lauren Calton won their
singles matches at #'s 4 and 6, respectively. Betsy
Mork and Kelsey Chance both extended their opponents to 3
sets before dropping the match.
The Hens defeated Occidental on the 4th, 8-1. The
Hens had another strong performance in doubles and then took
5 of 6 singles matches for the convincing win. Whitney
Henderson was especially impressive in her 6-1, 6-0 win at
the #2 spot. Kelsey Chance and Vicki Chen combined at
third doubles to win 8-0.
Pomona-Pitzer fell to U.C. San Diego on the 30th, 8-1.
The Hens' lone point came from the #1 doubles tandem of
Whitney Henderson and Kelli Howard as they won their match
in a tiebreaker. In singles play, Kelsey Chance was
the only Hen player to take a set off of her opponent.
On March 29th, the Hens defeated Point Loma down in San
Diego by the score of 6-3. The Hens took two of three
doubles matches and then won four of six singles matches to
clinch the victory. Getting wins for the Hens in
singles action were Whitney Henderson at #2, Betsy Mork at
#3, Kelsey Chance at the 5 spot, and Lauren Calton at #6.
The Hens fell to Amherst on the 17th of March by the
score of 6-3. In a bizarre match, Pomona-Pitzer came
out strong by sweeping all three doubles matches, but then
the tables were turned as Amherst swept all 6 singles
matches. Kelli Howard and Vicki Chen extended their
opponents to three sets before dropping the match.
On March 16th, the Hens soundly defeated Franklin &
Marshall, 9-0. Pomona-Pitzer swept the doubles action
without dropping more than 3 games and then went on to win
all six singles matches, dropping just one set in the
process. Kelli Howard provided the main highlight by
not dropping a game in her 6-0, 6-0 win at #1 singles.
Women's Track & Field
Overall: 5-2 - SCIAC: 5-2
Pomona-Pitzer's women's track and field team took third place Monday, April
28th at the season-ending SCIAC Championships at La Verne. The Sagehens scored
70 points to place behind winner La Verne (222) and Claremont-M-S (167), and
ahead of Occidental (58), Whittier (26), Cal Lutheran (26), Caltech (15), and
Redlands (5).
Sophomore Ann Prouty earned the lone Sagehen individual crown with her 1500m
victory in 4:49.97. Prouty took command of the race in the second lap and turned
back all challengers, and recorded the 8th Pomona-Pitzer conference title in
that event in the last 9 years. Prouty later came back to take fifth in the 800m
(2:25.05).
Gre'Juana Dennis also had a strong meet for Pomona-Pitzer. The senior took
third in the 100m (13.07), second in the long jump (17-2 3/4), and fourth in the
triple jump (36-1 1/4)--equaling the #2 mark all-time for Pomona-Pitzer.
Other All-SCIAC performances were turned in by Amy Rapp in the 1500m (3rd,
4:54.06) and 5000m (6th, 19:19.05), Nika Strzelecka in the 5000m (5th,
19:16.81), Susie Roley in the 1500m (5th, 5:01.42), Kristina Bajema in the 400m
(5th, 61.12) and 100 hurdles (4th, 16.50), Izzy Smith in the 400 hurdles (2nd,
67.22), Kenisha Dilliard in the 400 hurdles (3rd, 67.87), Ari Schuster in the
pole vault (5th, 8'6), and Raketa Ouedraogo in the hammer (5th, 135'3).
Pomona-Pitzer's women's track and field team sent a handful
of individuals to the CA/NV Collegiate Championships Friday
the 11th at San Diego State University. Five Sagehens
competed in the meet, which features NCAA Division I, II,
III and NAIA colleges in California and Nevada.
Frosh
Kristina Bajema clocked 16.40 in the women's 100 hurdles to
record the #8 all-time mark in school history. Izzy Smith
ran 67.49 in the 400 hurdles, Gre'Juana Dennis ran in the
100m (12.96) and long jumped 16'8", while Ann Prouty ran
4:52.12 in the 1500m, and Amy Rapp ran 10:57.51 in the
5000m.
Pomona-Pitzer hosts the 17th annual Pomona-Pitzer
Invitational on Strehle Track Friday. Nearly 2000 athletes
from all across the nation will converge on Pomona College's
blue oval. Events run from 8am - 6:30pm.
Pomona-Pitzer's women's team won all three dual meets
Saturday the 5th of Apirl in Eagle Rock to up the squad's conference record
to 5-2. The Sagehens downed Whittier (125-54), Cal Lutheran
(113-87) and Occidental (109-89) on Occidental's track.
Individual winners for the Sagehens included Gre'Juana
Dennis in four events--100m (13.02), 200m (27.03), long jump
(17'6 3/4), and triple jump (34'5)--Ann Prouty in the 1500m
(4:50.79, the fastest time in the conference this season),
Amy Rapp in the 5000m (19:22.06), Kristina Bajema in the 100
hurdles (16.67) and high jump (4'7 3/4), and Izzy Smith in
the 400 hurdles (67.99).
Pomona-Pitzer's women's team took sixth out of eight teams
Saturday the 29th of March in the UC San Diego Spring Break
Challenge. The Sagehens scored 31.5 points to place ahead of
CSU San Marcos (30 points) and Occidental (21). UC San Diego
won with 214 points.
Highlights for the squad included
sophomore Kenisha Dilliard's sterling 71.19 in the 400
hurdles -- the #3 mark in the conference this season. Other
strong marks included Izzy Smith's 400m time of 62.73, Susie
Roley's 2:29.83 in the 800m to win her heat, and Danielle
Ticoulat-Bowers' 4'11 1/2 in the high jump coming off of
injury.
The Sagehens travel to Occidental Saturday to compete in
the final SCIAC 4-way meet of the season. Currently at 2-2
in conference standings, Pomona-Pitzer will face Occidental,
Whittier and Cal Lutheran.
Pomona-Pitzer's women's track and field team's fiercest
battle on the 15th wasn't against Claremont-M-S and
Redlands--it was against the elements. Heading to their
events with umbrellas, the Sagehens survived a torrential,
day-long downpour at Whittier and came away with a win over
Redlands, 84-59, and a loss to cross-campus rival
Claremont-M-S, 86-58.
Only 14 events were contested, as
the discus, long jump, triple jump, high jump and pole vault
were cancelled because of rain and flooding at the event
sites.
Frosh Kristina Bajema won the 400 (63.0) and the 100
hurdles (17.3) to lead Pomona-Pitzer, while Kenisha Dilliard
won the 400 hurdles (75.9) and Amy Rapp won the 5000m
(19:34.0).
Men's Track & Field
Overall: 4-3 - SCIAC: 4-3
Frosh Ty Bundgaard finished 12th in the high jump at the NCAA III National
Championships at St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY. The 2003 SCIAC Champion
cleared 6'7" to finish 12th out of 16 athletes in his event.
Frosh Ty Bundgaard high jumped a stellar 6'8 3/4" Saturday at the Occidental
Invitational to provisionally qualify to the NCAA III National Championships.
Bundgaard placed second overall in the high-quality competition at Oxy, and
his mark is the #2 all-time Pomona-Pitzer mark behind Stan Watson's 1982 school
record of 7'0 3/4".
With his provisional mark, Bundgaard will find out next Monday whether or not
he advances to the National meet, which will be held at St. Lawrence University
(NY) May 22-24.
The Sagehen men went 2-1 at a 4-way meet with Cal Lutheran,
Whittier, and Occidental on the 5th of April. The Hens
defeated Cal Lutheran and Whittier, but fell to Occidental
by dropping the last event. Mike Kirtman and Joey
Cappola had great afternoons by finishing 1st and 2nd in the
high hurdles, the 100, and the intermediate hurdles.
Chris DuBois finished 2nd in the 1500 with a personal
record, and then won the 5000. Ty Bundgaard jumped a
college personal record with a 6'6" mark in the high jump.
Matt Zay finished 2nd in the long jump and won the triple
jump.
Three different personal best were performed in San Diego by
the Hen squad on the 29th of March. Alec Head threw
the javelin 181'4, Mark Melief had a 6'5 1/2 in the high
jump and Chris Dubois ran a 15:51 in the 5000.
Pomona-Pitzer
sent some athletes to LaVerne on the 22nd and produce some
great results. Alec Head started the day with a win in
the javelin. He followed with a personal record in the
discuss at 119 feet. Matt Zay jumped a PR 44'2 in the
triple jump and David Maas won the 1500 with a PR time of
4:09.15.
On Friday the 21st, eight Sagehen runners got personal
records at the Occidental Distance Carnival. In the
800, David Maas and Rich Cannon both achieved their best
times, while in the 1500, Chris Dubois, Will Swanson, and
Mike Bergeron all did the same. Golden Krishna, David
Marshall, and Andrew McDavid ran their best times in the
5000.
At Whittier on the 15th, the Hens defeated Redlands in
the driving rain, 91-70. Joey Cappola ran 16.1 in the
high hurdles, a personal record. Also getting personal
records were Chris Dubois in the 1500 with a 4:09 and Crosby
Freeman in the 5000 with a 15:17.
Golf
Overall: 3-5 - SCIAC 2-5The Hens
closed out their season with yet another 6th place finish at the 36 hole final
tournament. The tournament was held at Los Serranos Country Club's North and
South courses. The Hens shot a 299 on the par 72 North, their best of the year,
and a 313 on the par 74 south course. Highlights included Joe Gill's even par 72
on the north course, Greg Woulfe's 76 on the South course, and Dylan
Pelletier-Ross's 75 on the north. Greg Woulfe led the Hens overall with a
combined score of 151. Redland's won the team title with a team total of 583,
one under par. Redlands R.J. Scholl won the individual
title with a combined total of 5 under par. The Hens finished 6th overall in
SCIAC.
The Hens finished 6th in the second SCIAC 18 hole tournament at Hacienda
Country Club on April 24th with a score of 333. La Verne won the tournament with
a 304. James Pearce of La Verne won the individual title with a 73 on the par 72
course. Ben Hochstein led the Hens with an 81.
The Hens finished 6th in the first SCIAC 18 hole tournament at Annandale
Country Club on April 21st with a score of 344 . Joe Gill led with an 81.
Redlands won the individual title with a score of 312. Redlands' Jordan Bailey
won the tournament with a 74 on the par 70 course.
Pomona-Pitzer beat Whittier at Friendly Hills Country Club on April 17th by a
score of 326 to 340. Ben Nightingale was the only player under 80 for the match
with a 79 on the difficult layout. Greg Woulfe followed with an 80.
The Hens defeated the Beavers of Caltech on the 15th by the
final score of 325 to 361. Scott Pearsall was the sole
Sagehen golfer under 80 on the day with a 78, but the Hens
still came in with 36 fewer strokes. Ben Hochstein was
next best for the Hens with an 80 at Red Hill Country Club,
while Joe Gill came in with an 83, third best on the team.
Pomona-Pitzer was defeated by rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps
on the 12th at Los Serranos, 290-302. The Sagehens had
5 players break 80 on the day, but it wasn't enough to match
the low scores from the Stags. Ben Hochstein led the
Hen effort with a 72. Joe Gill came in two shots off
that pace with a 74. Dylan Ross and Ben Nightingale
each shot a 78 on the afternoon.
Pomona-Pitzer fell to Occidental on April 7th, 324-321.
Joe Gill was the lone Hen to come in under 80, as he shot a
78 on the Annandale course. Scott Pearsall was two
shots off that pace with an 80 on the afternoon. Greg
Woulfe and Ben Hochstein both came in with 83's.
The Hens
fell to Cal Lutheran at Sterling Hills on the 3rd.
Pomona-Pitzer came in with a 316, 8 strokes behind the
Kingsmen. Scott Pearsall and Ben Hochstein were the
top two performers for the Sagehens, as they both came in
with scores of 75 on the day. Joe Gill was next in
line for the Hen squad, coming in with an 82.
The Hens defeated Chapman on April 1st at Red Hill Country
Club, 321-330. Scott Pearsall and Joe Gill were the
top two finishers for the Hens, both coming in at 78 (+6).
Dylan Pelletier-Ross shot an 80 while Greg Woulfe and Ben
Nightingale both finished their rounds with an 85.
Pomona-Pitzer finished in a tie for 10th out of 15 teams
at the Cal Lutheran Invitational on the 24th and 25th of
March. Joe Gill and Ben Hochstein each came in with 3
round totals of 242, tying one another for 23rd
individually. Greg Woulfe shot a 246, good enough for
34th place, and Scott Pearsall came in 57th with his total
of 253.
Several SCIAC players participated in Pomona-Pitzer's
annual spring break tournament on March 20th. The Hens
finished in 3rd position, defeating Whittier, but falling to
Occidental and Claremont-M-S. They shot a team
total of 313 for the 18-hole tournament. The top Sagehen
finisher, Ben Hochstein, tied for third with a 74. Ben
Nightengale's 77 was unable to be counted in the team total
because he was playing as an individual in the 6th spot.
Dylan Peltier-ross was the only other Hen under 80 for the
day with a 77.
At Santaluz Club in Del Mar, Pomona-Pitzer finished 13th
out of 14 teams in the 53rd annual Southern California
Intercollegiate Championship over the weekend of March 10th
and 11th with a three round total of 949 or 97 over par.
Division one (D1), division two (D2), division three (D3),
and NAIA teams all participated in this large tournament.
The winning team was Colorado Springs with a total score of
885 or 3 over par. Andrew Scott of San Diego State was the
number one individual finisher with a 3 round total of 211
or 3 under par. Number one SCIAC school, Redlands scored 900
or 48 over par. Top SCIAC individual was Jordan Bailey of
Redlands scoring 219 or 6 over par. Scott Pearsall was
the top Hen finisher with a 3 round total of 232 (+19).
Women's Water Polo
Overall: 22-7 SCIAC 9-1
Pomona-Pitzer went 5-0 at the Collegiate III National Tournament to claim the
National Championship. The amazing tournament began on the 2nd of May with
two dominating wins for the Hen women. Pomona-Pitzer, the 2nd seeded team
in the tournament, first disposed of Penn State Behrend 14-2 before dismantling
Macalester by the final of 20-3. The Hens played 2 more games on the 3rd
of May, starting with neighbor Claremont-M-S. The Sagehens won that battle
contested in CMS's pool by the the score of 11-8. In the semi-final
contest, the Hens took on and upended the Banana Slugs from U.C. Santa Cruz
11-5. On May 4th, the championship game was an epic contest that lasted 5
overtime periods. After the first two overtime periods were played, the
format turned to sudden death and third sudden death frame went the Sagehens'
way on a goal by tournament MVP, Joy Haviland. Haviland had 4 goals in the
game, while Lindsay Norcott had 2, Ashley Gucinski 1 and Lauren Moore 1.
Morgan Sokolow made 13 saves in net for Pomona-Pitzer. Lucia Schmit joined
Haviland on the first team All-Tournament team while teammates Blair Henderson
and Morgan Sokolow made the 2nd team. The title was the first for
the Hens since they won back to back championships in 1993 and 1994.
Pomona-Pitzer went 4-1 at the SCIAC tournament, falling only in the finals to
Redlands by the score of 3-1. All of the scoring in the game was done in
the 3rd quarter while defense ruled the rest of the game. Lucia Schmit
tallied the lone goal for the Hens. On the way to the finals, the Hens
knocked off La Verne 10-3, Occidental 11-8, Whittier 11-8, and Claremont-M-S
11-5.
The Sagehens defeated SCIAC foe Occidental on the 19th of April by the score
of 10-6. The Hens reached 10 goals for the 3rd straight game. Three
Hens did all of the scoring in the game as Lucia Schmit tallied 5, Ashley
Gucinski had 3, and Joy Haviland chipped in with 2. Morgan Sokolow and
Lara Kruska shared time in the net for the Hens with Sokolow making 4 saves, and
Kruska stopping 3 shots.
Pomona-Pitzer outdueled La Verne on the 17th, 10-5. The Hens outscored
the Leos in every quarter of action, starting with a 3-1 opening stanza lead.
Joy Haviland led 6 Sagehen scorers with 3 goals. Fiona Dunbar and Lucia
Schmit both added 2 goals for the Sagehen women. Morgan Sokolow made 6
saves between the pipes for the Hens.
The Hens defeated Claremont-M-S on the 12 of April, 10-5. The Hens got
off to an early 3-0 lead after the 1st quarter of play and never looked back.
Lucia Schmit led the Hen effort with 5 goals in the game while Stephanie Stewart
added 2. Morgon Sokolow made 5 saves in net for the Hens.
The Hens doubled up Whittier on the 9th, 8-4. Pomona-Pitzer
was up 7-1 going into the 4th quarter and coasted to the
victory to remain undefeated in SCIAC action. Lucia
Schmit led the way offensively for the Hens with 3 goals
while Joy Haviland and Toby Branz added 2 apiece.
Ashley Gucinski scored once for the Hens. Morgan
Sokolow made 8 saves in net for Pomona-Pitzer.
For the first time in over 8 years, the Sagehens upended the
tough team from Redlands. Pomona-Pitzer used a solid
defense and a controlled offense to beat the Bulldogs 5-2 on
the 5th of April. Blair Henderson led the Hen scorers
with 2 goals. Joy Haviland, Toby Branz, and Lucia
Schmit all had one goal apiece. Morgan Sokolow made 13
saves in net for Pomona-Pitzer.
The Hens defeated Harvard on the 27th of March, 7-4.
Five different Hens scored goals, led by Blair Henderson and
Lucia Schmit, each of whom found the back of the net twice.
The Hens led 7-2 after 3 quarters of action and and held on
for the victory. Devivo had another solid game in net
for the Hens with 7 saves.
Pomona-Pitzer split two
contests on the 25th, falling to Cal Baptist 9-5 and beating
Santa Clara in overtime by the score of 11-10. Blair
Henderson and Joy Haviland did all the scoring in the 9-5
loss with Henderson leading the way with her 3 goals to
Haviland's two. Marcella Devivo made 5 saves in the
net for the Hens. Against Santa Clara, Haviland
tallied 7 of the Hens' 11 goals on the game, with one coming
in the overtime stanza. Blair Henderson tallied two
goals for the Hens while Lindsay Norcott and Lucia Schmit
each had 1 goal. Devivo had a great game in net,
making 10 stops.
The Hens played 4 games in the Claremont Colleges
Tournament over the weekend of the 22nd and 23rd. The
Hens went 2-2 on the weekend, defeating Cal State Hayward
and Chapman, while falling to Cal State Northridge and
Arizona State. In the win against Hayward, Joy
Haviland again led the scoring effort with 3 goals.
Blair Henderson and Lucia Schmit each had 2 goals in the
game. In a 5-4 loss to Northridge, Haviland scored 3
times and Henderson had one goal. The Hens soundly
defeated Chapman 10-3 in the tournament. Blair
Henderson and Ashley Gucinski led the team with 3 goals
apiece in the game while Haviland had 2 and Lindsay Norcott
and Fiona Dunbar each had 1. The Hens fell to Arizona
State by the final tally of 10-3 to finish the tournament
with a .500 mark of 2-2. Over the 4 game weekend,
Morgan Sokolow made 22 saves between the posts.
The Hens took on and defeated Yale on the 21st, 15-6.
The Hens outscored the visiting squad 10-1 in the 1st and
3rd quarters to pull away with the win. Eight
different Sagehen players found the back of the net for
Pomona-Pitzer in the victory. Blair Henderson had 7 of
the Hens' 22 steals in the game. Morgan Sokolow made 6
saves for Pomona-Pitzer.
On March 14th, the Hens took two games at home against
Bucknell and George Washington. Against Bucknell, the
Hens won 9-7 behind 3-goal efforts from both Joy Haviland
and Lucia Schmit. Lauren Moore had 2 goals and Blair
Henderson chipped in with one as well. Morgan Sokolow
made 8 saves in net for the Hens. The Hens were down
at halftime but held Bucknell to just one second half goal.
Against George Washington, the Hens outscored the opponent
2-0 in the final quarter to win the game by one goal, 7-6.
Haviland again tallied 3 goals for Pomona-Pitzer. Toby
Branz also scored 3 times and Lauren Moore scored one.
Sokolow made 6 saves for the Hens.
Pomona-Pitzer defeated Michigan State on the 5th of March,
14-6. The Hens went into halftime with an 8-4 lead and
tallied 6 goals in the final quarter to pull away with the
win. Lucia Schmit led the Hens offensively with 5
goals and Joy Haviland had a great game as well, finding the
back of the net 4 times. Lindsay Norcott scored twice
for the Hen squad. Morgan Sokolow had an impressive 11
saves between the netposts and Blair Henderson had a solid
defensive showing with 4 steals in the game.
The Hen Water Polo squad played 3 tough contests to open the
2003 season and fell in all three. The Hens played two
games on the 1st of March against Arizona State and Cal
State Bernardino. The closest game came against
Arizona State, where the Hens fell 8-7. Joy Haviland
scored 4 of the Hens' 7 goals in the game. Morgan
Sokolow stopped 13 shots in net. Against C.S.S.B., the
Hens fell by the score of 11-5. Haviland and Lara
Krusha each found the back of the net two times for the
Hens. Sokolow came up with 8 saves in net. On
March 2nd, the Hens traveled to Irvine to take on the
Anteaters of U.C. Irvine and fell to the home team, 9-3.
Pomona-Pitzer went into halftime up 3-2.
Haviland scored twice and Lucia Schmit tallied one goal for
the Hens. Sokolow made 11 saves and had 4 steals for
the Hens.
