Baseball

The men's baseball squad
(24-12, 16-5) wrapped up the SCIAC season with 4
straight wins over conference opponents. The Hens
first swept the Beavers of Caltech on the 27th and 28th
of April with scores of 21-0, 11-1, and 18-2. They
then went on to beat Redlands on May 1st by the tally of
14-2. For the first time in the history of the
Sagehen baseball program, the team has won at least 20
games in back to back seasons.
The
Hens traveled to Azusa Pacific on the 24th of April to
take on the tough NAIA school and fell just short by the
score of 7-6. The Hens held a slim 6-4 lead going
into the 8th inning but the host squad rallied for 2 in
the 8th and 1 in the 9th for the victory. Luke
Smude and Alex Siele each had 2 hits for the Hens on the
day. Smude's 2 hits included a home run and a
double. Mike Renery started on the mound for the
Hens, going 7 innings and allowing just 5 earned runs in
the contest.
The
Hens took on rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on
the 20th and 21st and dropped 2 out of 3 contests to the
Stags. In the 1st game on the 20th, the Hens
rallied for 7 runs in the top of the 9th inning to send
the game into extra innings, but fell in the bottom of
the 10th. Rob Ruiz and Nick Bulaich both had 4
hits in the game for the Hens. Ruiz had 2 doubles,
6 RBI's, 3 runs and a walk.
On
Saturday the 21st, the Hens split two shut-outs, losing
2-0, and winning 5-0. In the loss, the Hens outhit
the Stags, but could not get any runs across the
plate. Matt Rager went 3 for 4 on the day and
Ollie Morrison went 2 for 4. Adam Gardner pitched
a complete game, allowing just the two runs, walking 3
and striking out 12 batters.
Game
2 on Saturday saw the Hens get back on the winning track
with a 5-0 victory. Alex Siele and Luke Smude each
had 2 hits and a run scored for the Hens. Spike
Einsiedler earned the win for the Hens, pitching a 2-hit
complete game shut-out.
The
Hens took on Concordia at home on the 17th and
rallied for the 6-5 win with 3 runs in the bottom of the
9th inning. Pitching was done by committee as the
Hens threw many pitchers for the win. Jose Cortez
went 2 for 4 with a home run, his 16th, on the
day. The Hens will face off against rival
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps this weekend for 3 big games with
SCIAC title implications.

Softball
|
|
|
The
Hen softball
(4-31, 2-16) squad wrapped up their season with 3 losses
to Cal Lutheran on the 27th and 28th of April. The
Hens fell to the Regals by scores of 10-1, 1-0, and
8-0. The Hens ended the season with three players,
Sharon Silveira, Jocelyn Burke, and Dara Sievers all
batting over .300 against SCIAC opponents. Pitcher
Shannon Russell again proved to be a solid performer in
the SCIAC as she made 23 starts, pitched 130 innings,
and struck out 60 batters on the year.
The
Hens squad took 2 of 3 games from Whittier
College over the weekend of the 21st of April. On Friday
the 20th, the Hens won by the count of 7-2. The
win marked the first in SCIAC play this year for the
Hens. Sharon Silveira had 3 hits in the game,
including a triple. She also pitched a complete
game, allowing just 2 earned runs in the contest.
On
Saturday the 21st, the Hens split two contests. In
the 1st game, the Hens fell by the score of 2-0 as they
were able to gather only 3 hits in the game.
Sharon Silveira again pitched a complete game, allowing
just the 2 runs.
In
the final game of the 3 game series with Whittier, the
Hen offense exploded for 8 runs on 17 hits. Jaeda
dos Santos and Sharon Silveira both had 3 hits in the
game. Dos Santos knocked in 4 runs on the
afternoon. Shannon Russell pitched a complete
game, allowing just 4 hits and 3 earned runs for the
contest.
The
Sagehen team lost two games against The Master's on
the 13th. In the first game, the Hens fell by the
score of 5-0. Sharon Silveira went 3 for 4 on the
day with a double. Shannon Russel pitched 6
innings for the Hens, allowing just 3 earned runs.
In
the second game of the day, the Hens got on the board
but it wasn't enough as they again fell, this time by
the score of 6-2. Five errors in the field hurt
the Hens in their bid for the victory. Sharon
Silveira again had the best game for Pomona-Pitzer,
going 2 for 4 at the plate with a double as well as
pitching 6 innings, allowing just 3 earned runs, and
striking out 2.

Tennis

|
The men's tennis squad
(14-7, 7-3) wrapped up their season with a first round loss
in the NCAA West Regional to Pacific Lutheran. J.R.
Hall was the lone Hen victor at # 1 singles with an
impressive 6-1, 6-2 performance. Hall is also the West
Region Winner of the Rookie of the Year award.
The Hens competed in the SCIAC Championships on the 20th
and 21st of April and came away with a 2nd place
finish. The Hens defeated the Beavers from Caltech in
the opening round and that win earned the Sagehens a spot in
the semi-finals against rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
The Hens edged the Stags by the score of 4-3 in a match that
featured four 3-set marathons, 2 of which ended in 3rd set
tiebreakers. Singles winners on the day for the Hens
were Dave Fern at #2, Sam Gaines at #3, Mike Benaroya at #5,
and Jamie Frank at #6. The following day saw the Hens
meet up with SCIAC favorite Redlands in the finals.
The Hens were unable to match the performance from the
previous day and wound up dropping the match by the score of
7-0. The Hens' J.R. Hall and Dave Fern were both
selected to the All-SCIAC first team. The Hens'
performance in the tournament should earn them a birth in
the NCAA's.
The Hens traveled to Caltech on the 14th and upended the
Beavers by the score of 7-0. The Hens won the doubles
point by winning all three doubles matches and did not drop
a match in singles play to complete the sweep. J.R.
Hall, Dave Fern, and Sam Gaines all won easily playing at
#'s 1,2, and 3. Max Italiaander got his first action
of the season and pulled out a 3 set match. The Hens
will go into the SCIAC tournament as the # 3 seed and will
most likely face Caltech in the first round on the
20th.

Women's
Tennis

|
The women's tennis team
(15-6, 9-1) wrapped up their outstanding season with an NCAA
Quarterfinals loss to eventual National Champion
Williams. The Ephs just defeated the Hens by the score
of 5-4. The Hens earned a spot in the Quarters by
defeating both Redlands and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the
first and second rounds of the NCAA West Regional
Tournament, held at CMS. Sheree Schwartz and Meghan
Gould went on to a second place finish in the doubles
tournament. The two teamed up for the national
championship in last year's event. Sagehen Betsy Mork
was named the Western Region rookie of the year as well as
the region's player to watch. Coach Lebedeff was named
the NCAA coach of the year.
The Hens wrapped up SCIAC play with a 2nd place finish in
the conference tournament. The Hens earned a tie for
the SCIAC Championship with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps since
they were undefeated during the regular season. The
Hens defeated La Verne in the first round of the tournament,
5-0. That win put them into the semi-finals against
Whittier, a match that saw the Hens again win in dominating
fashion, 8-0. In the finals, the Sagehens met up with
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in a rematch of the great regular
season dual. Playing without #1 player Sheree
Schwartz, the Hens came up just short by the score of
5-4. Sheree Schwartz was named the conference MVP and
was joined on the All-SCIAC first team by Meghan
Gould. Three other Hens were All-SCIAC 2nd team
selections. The Hens will now await an invitation to
the NCAA's.
The Hens dismantled the Beavers from Caltech on the 12th
by the score of 9-0. The Hens easily won all three
doubles matches and did not drop a set in singles
action. Chelsea Heller, Katie Siedel, and Lorraine
Salas, playing at #'s 4, 5, and 6 lost a combined total of 2
games in their 3 singles matches. The Hens will next
head into the SCIAC tournament as the # 1 seed.

Men's
Track & Field

|
|
Members of
the men's track & field
(5-2, 5-2) team competed at
the NCAA III National Track and Field Championships where
senior Adam Boardman took 9th in the steeplechase in a
personal best 9:14.20. In a stirring homestretch run,
Boardman moved into 8th place (the final All American
position), but was overtaken by another runner just before
the line.
Senior
Ari Polychronopoulos tossed the hammer 166-1 to finish 12th
in the field. Polychronopoulos ended up 7th in his
preliminary flight, and did not advance to the final.
Senior
Adam Boardman won the 5000m in 15:23.43 to give the Sagehens
their lone individual crown at the SCIAC
Championships held at Occidental. Boardman also took 2nd in
the Steeplechase at 9:32.29.
Ari
Polychronopoulos earned All-SCIAC honors in three events.
The senior took 2nd in the shot put (45'6 1/2), 2nd in the
hammer throw (163'5), and third in the discus (138'6) to
score numerous points for the Sagehens. Other All-SCIAC
honors won by Pomona-Pitzer included David Allen in the pole
vault (3rd, 13'5 3/4), Joe Hartford in the pole vault
(4th-tie, 12'6), Chris Avery in the hammer (4th, 149'5),
Mike Kirtman in the 400 hurdles (5th, 58.25), John Singleton
in the steeplechase (4th, 9:50.82) and 5000m (3rd,
15:36.01), and Dan Wire (4th, 182'1), Nick Grudin (5th,
175'9), and Greg Teplow (6th, 175'3) in the javelin.
Pomona-Pitzer
scored 79 points to take third place in SCIAC behind
Claremont-M-S (212) and La Verne (168), and ahead of
Occidental (69), Cal Lutheran (27), Whittier (26), Redlands
(5), and Caltech (3).
The
Sagehens will send Dan Wire to the CA/NV Collegiate State
Championships this weekend at UC Irvine Saturday and Sunday.
The Hen team won three dual meets Saturday
the 21st at
Occidental in a SCIAC 4-way competition.
Individual
winners for the Sagehens included Dan Wire in the javelin
(171'3), John Singleton in the steeplechase (9:55.85), Adam
Boardman in the 1500 (4:15.30) and 5000 (16:11.88), Jake
Oken-Berg in the 800 (1:59.18), Matt Hermsen in the triple
jump (42'1 1/2), Joe Hartford in the pole vault (12'0), and
Aristides Polychronopoulos in the discus (148'1) and hammer
(174'3)--both personal bests and the latter an improvement
on his provisional qualifying mark to Nationals.
Pomona-Pitzer
hosted 1500 athletes Friday the 20th in the 15th annual Pomona-Pitzer
Invitational. Teams from across the nation competed on
Strehle Track. A few Sagehens competed, but most rested up for the SCIAC Championships on Monday and Tuesday,
April 23 and 24. Prelims and a few finals will be held on
Monday, while Tuesday will see all finals.

Track & Field

The women's track & field
(3-4, 3-4) team sent sophomore Laura Bishop to the NCAA's
this past week. Bishop ran two races, and clocked
personal best times in both. Bishop finished 10th in the
3000m race in 10:00.13--the #2 time in school history. The
next day, Bishop ran the 5000 for only the second time in
her career and took 13th place out of 21 runners. Bishop's
time of 17:48.94 broke her own school record of 17:50.55
that she recorded in March in her first outing at the
distance.
The Hens sent one one individual to the U.C. Irvine
Invitational on the 6th of May. Laura Bishop ran a
personal best of 4:41.55 in the 1500 to record a provisional
NCAA qualifying time. Bishop's time is the #4 mark in
team history.
Hen team
member Laura Bishop took third place in the CA/NV
Collegiate Championships Saturday at UC Irvine. Competing
against NCAA I, II, and NAIA opponents, Bishop clocked
10:02.77 to set a huge personal best and automatically
qualify to the National Championships in late May.
Bishop
entered the meet with a best of 10:18, and dropped the mark
significantly--and just missing the school record of 9:58.01
set by Stephanie Shideler in 1997. Also at the meet, Sara
Hastings cleared 9'9 in the pole vault, Samantha Hauff threw
the javeline 106' and Jeaneen Chapman hurled the hammer
127'.
Sophomore
Laura Bishop won two individual events at the SCIAC
Championships Monday and Tuesday to lead the Sagehens to a
fourth-place conference finish. The meet was hosted by Cal
Lutheran and held at Occidental. Bishop easily handled the
fields in both the 1500m and 3000m. Her 1500 time of 4:43.07
was a personal best, and the #4 all-time mark for Pomona-Pitzer,
while her 3k winning mark was 10:26.53.
Pomona-Pitzer
scored 42 points to finish behind Claremont-M-S (212.5), La
Verne (140.5) and Occidental (84), and ahead of Redlands
(36), Whittier (27), Cal Lutheran (15) and Caltech (0).
Senior
Jeaneen Chapman threw 132'9 to take 4th in the hammer and
earn All-SCIAC honors, while frosh Madeline Mundt took 4th
in the 800 in a personal best 2:31.62, and junior Sara
Hastings tied for 3rd in the pole vault at 9'6. Pomona-Pitzer's
4x100 relay team of Anita Kapoor, Hastings, Anabel Fay, and
Lily Holmes finished 3rd in 53.15, while the 4x400 relay
team of Susie Roley, Mundt, Fay, and Shannon Wolff finished
5th.
The
Sagehens will send four to the CA/NV Collegiate State
Championships this Saturday and Sunday at UC Irvine. Laura
Bishop (3000m), Sara Hastings (pole vault), Samantha Hauff
(javelin), and Jeaneen Chapman (hammer) will compete for
Pomona-Pitzer.
The Hen team downed Redlands and Caltech, but fell
to Occidental, Saturday the 21st in a SCIAC 4-way meet at Oxy's
track.
Individual
winners for the Sagehens include Jeaneen Chapman in the
hammer (139'11), and Laura Bishop in the 1500 (no time) and
3000 (10:34.16). In addition, personal bests were recorded
by Anabel Fay in the 200 (29.54), Jamie Burns in the 1500
(5:33), Heather Callahan in the 3000 (11:36.65), and
Samantha Hauff in the triple jump (33'0 1/2).
Pomona-Pitzer
hosted 1500 athletes Friday the 20th in the 15th annual Pomona-Pitzer

Golf

The golf team
(3-4, 3-4) began competition in the SCIAC tournament last
week and came away with some strong results. The team
placed 3rd on the 16th with a score of 299, just 2 shots off
the leaders, Redlands and La Verne. Luc Shuster
finished 2nd individually with a 73 on the day. On the
19th, the Hens finished in 2nd position with a 302, again
just 2 shots off the leader, Cal Lutheran. Luc Shuster
again had a great day as he came in the top individual and
the only player to finish under par with a 2-under 68.
R.G. Manalac was the next best Hen with a 74 on the
day.

Women's
Water Polo
|

|
The women's water polo team
(8-14, 5-5) wrapped up their season at the SCIAC tournament
hosted by Pomona-Pitzer. The Hens went 2-3 for the
tournament, good enough for 4th place in the
conference. In the first round, the Hens defeated
Whittier by the score of 14-3 on the strength of Lindsay
Norcott's 4 goals. In the second round of action, the
Hens beat Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 11-7. Claire Townsend
had 12 saves in net for the Hens in that game. In the
last 3 games of the tournament, the Hens fell by close
scores of 6-4 to La Verne, 7-4 to Redlands, and 6-4 to
Occidental to finish the tournament.
The Hens traveled to La Verne on the 21st and came away
with a 7-6 victory over the host Leopards. Lucia
Schmit scored twice for the Hens in a game that saw the Hens
lead the whole way. Claire Townsend made 23 saves in
net for the Sagehens who will next participated in the SCIAC
tournament to be hosted by Pomona-Pitzer from the 27th thru
the 29th.
The Hens
squad evened its SCIAC record with an 8-2 home win
against Whittier on the 18th. Lucia Schmit scored half
of the 8 goals put up by the Hens. In all, 5
different players scored for Pomona-Pitzer. The
Sagehens shut out the Poets through 3 quarters of
action.
The Hens took on Occidental on the 13th and squeaked by
the Tigers in overtime by the score of 8-7. Sasha
Moustakas had 3 goals in the win for the Hens.
Stephanie Forman scored the overtime goal that gave the Hens
the victory. Claire Townsend made 13 saves in net for
the Hens.
The Hens
played 3 games on the 14th at Long Beach State and came up
short to 3 tough opponents. The Hens fell to Cal State
Bakersfield in overtime by the score of 9-8. Jacquie
Cole led the offensive charge for the Hens with 3
goals. Against Cal Baptist, the Sagehen squad was
outscored 12-3. Lucia Schmit had all 3 goals for
Pomona-Pitzer. In the final game of the day, the Hens
lost another close affair to UC Irvine, 12-10. Pomona-Pitzer
came back to make it close after being down 6-1 at the end
of the first half. Jacquie Cole again led the Hens in
scoring with 3 goals, all in the 3rd quarter of
action.
