The Sagehens hosted the Poets of Whittier on the afternoon
of the 26th, and earned their 3rd win of the year. All
of the scoring in the game was done in the first half.
Pomona-Pitzer scored all of their points in the first
quarter. The first Sagehen score came on a 50 yard
touchdown pass from Justin Fenchel to Matthew Hermsen.
On Whittier's next drive, Aaron Perez picked up a fumble and
sprinted 70 yards to the endzone. That concluded
the scoring for the Hens, but it was all they needed.
The Poets had the ball with under 7 minutes to play and
drove the length of the field, only to have the potential
game winning field goal blocked by John Anderson to seal the Sagehen win.
The Poets held the ball for 13 more minutes than the Hens
and outgained the home team 321-163 on the day, but 14
Whittier penalties for 99 yards helped the Hens cause.
Offensively for the Hens, Justin Fenchel completed 10 of 15
passes for 117 yards, including the touchdown to Hermsen.
Kenneth Clark got 20 of the Hens' 23 carries on the ground,
picking up 35 yards on the day. Russell Ligon hauled
in 4 passes for 36 yards, and Matthew Hermsen corralled 3
for 64 yards, including the 50 score.
Bobby Boeche had a big day for the Hens defensively with 11
total tackles on the afternoon, including 3 solo sacks.
Keegan Dresow had 8 tackles and Seamus O'Toole had 7.
For the 104th time, the Sagehens locked horns with
Occidental and lost a tough ballgame on the road against the
Tigers, 24-21. The Hens and Tigers took turns putting
points on the board all night long. Unfortunately for
the Hens, Oxy was the first team to score as well as the
last. Pomona-Pitzer held a 21-17 lead going into the
fourth quarter of play, but the team was held scoreless in
the final frame while the Tigers found the endzone.
Kenneth Clark netted 57 yards rushing for the Hens on 20
carries to lead the ground attack. Justin Fenchel
played a great game at quarterback, completing 17 of 28
passes for 170 yards and 2 touchdowns. Russell Ligon
caught the most balls for the Hens, bringing in 6 for 52
yards and a score. Andrew Vie and Benjamin La Coss
were the other two receivers with touchdowns on the night.
John Anderson threw the touchdown pass to La Coss. It
was Anderson's only pass attempt in the game.
Defensively for the Sagehens, Jonathan Chock led the way
with 10.5 total tackles. Aaron Perez was next in line
with 7.5 tackles of his own.
Pomona-Pitzer got back into the win column on the 12th win a
home victory over the visiting University of Chicago
Maroons. The Sagehens got off to an early 24-6 lead in
the first half and held on to upend the Maroons. The
Hens turned early turnovers into points and never trailed
all afternoon. The Hens held Chicago to just 65 yards
rushing on the day and the Pomona-Pitzer offense had
possession of the ball for just under 40 of the game's 60
minutes.
Two Sagehen quarterbacks split time in the game.
Starter John Anderson went 3 of 7 for 65 yards and 2 scores,
while Justin Fenchel came in to complete 6 of 12 passes for
45 yards. In the backfield, Ken Clark took over for an
injured Jon Samples, and tallied 90 tough yards in the game
on 25 carries. Samples rushed for 61 yards on 16
carries before leaving the game with a bad ankle.
Benjamin LaCoss led the receiving corps with 3 catches for
46 yards and a touchdown. Jon Samples also hauled in a
touchdown catch. Eric Nielsen also made an offensive
contribution with field goals of 21 and 42 yards.
Defensively for the Hens, Jonathan Chock led the way with 10
tackles. Jonathan Green and Aaron Perez each had 9
tackles. Perez had 3 sacks for the Hens, Green had 2,
and Chock had 1.

Men's Soccer

The Hens fell at home to 12th ranked Redlands on the 26th, 3-1.
Scott Coleman got the Hens off to a 1-0 lead in the second minute of
action but the visiting Bulldogs had an answer. Redlands
tallied 3 goals in the remainder of the first half and that would be
all the scoring for the rest of the game. Jay Schneider and
Dan Bendett split time between the posts for the Hens.
Schneider made 2 saves, while Bendett had 5 of his own.
The Hens walked across the street to take on rival Claremont-M-S and
came back home with a 2-1 victory that came in double overtime.
The final goal, scored by Scott Coleman, came with just 14 seconds
remaining in the second and final overtime period. Ian
Preikschat scored the first goal for Pomona-Pitzer off of a rebound
from a corner kick.
Pomona-Pitzer had an offensive explosion against La Verne on the
19th, defeating the Leos 7-1. Six different Sagehens scored in
game. Scott Coleman, Joe Amick, Matt Lee-Ashley, Wyatt Wells,
and Chris Hunter all found the back of the net once while Aaron
Mohan tallied two of the Hens' 7 goals. Jay Schneider and Dan
Bendett split time in net for the Hens. Pomona-Pitzer allowed
just 5 shots on the day.
Pomona-Pitzer hosted the Poets of Whittier on the 16th and tallied
one goal in each half for a 2-0 win. The Hens outshot the
Poets 26-6 on the afternoon and dominated play throughout despite a
couple of decent scoring chances for the visiting squad. Scott
Coleman and Joe Amick each scored a goal for Pomona-Pitzer, with
Coleman's coming off an assist from Liam Patrick. Jay
Schneider made 6 saves in net for the Hens.
The Sagehens got a big win on the road over Occidental on the 12th,
3-2. Matt Lee-Ashley had a great game, finding the back of the
net twice for the Hens. Joe Amick tallied the other Sagehen
score. Lee-Ashley provided the assist on Amick's goal.
Pomona-Pitzer got back into the win column with a 4-0 home victory
over Caltech on the 9th. The Hens got goals from 4 different
players on the afternoon. Netza Bravo, Joe Amick, Wyatt Wells,
and Doug Bernstein all found the back of the net for the Sagehens.
The Hens outshot the Beavers 25-2, and keeper Dan Bendett stopped
both of those attempts.
The Sagehens dropped to 3-6 on the afternoon of the 7th with a 2-1
non-conference loss to visiting Chapman. The Sagehens got on
the board first with a goal from Scott Coleman in the 24th minute of
play, but two second half Chapman goals gave the Panthers the
victory. Jay Schneider made 7 saves between the posts for the
Sagehens.

Volleyball 6-16

The Sagehens lost a tough 5 game match on the 26th to
Whittier. Pomona-Pitzer got up 2 games to 1 but lost
the last 2 frames to the visiting Poets. The Sagehens
had 4 players with double digit kills, led by Jessica
Rybka's 17. Colleen Chrisco had 14, while Renee
Faulkner and Vicenta Arrizon had 12 and 10, respectively.
Katherine Hopkins led the team defensively with 27 digs and
Debbie Birnbaum dished out a team high 30 assists.
Pomona-Pitzer fell at Claremont-M-S on the night of the
25th in 3 straight games. Renee Faulkner led the Hen
effort with 12 kills on the night and 9 digs, both team
highs. No other Sagehen had more than 4 kills on the
night. Alysha Lascano dished out 21 assists to lead
the Hens on the night.
The Sagehens doubled their win total of a year ago when
they traveled to Pasadena to defeat Caltech, 3 games to 1.
The win brought the Hens to 6-14 on the year with matches
remaining. Renee Faulkner and Colleen Chrisco led the
team with 12 and 10 kills, respectively. They also led
the team in digs on the night. Debbie Birnbaum had 16
assists to go with her 6 service aces to pace the Hens.
The Hens traveled to Chapman on the 18th and fell in 4
games to the Panthers. Pomona-Pitzer came out strong
with a 30-20 game 1 win but then lost the next three.
Katherine Hopkins led the Sagehen effort with her 15 kills
and 14 digs, both team highs. Alysha Lascano dished
out 25 assists on the night to lead the Hens.
The Sagehens won a tough 5 game match against Alliant
International on the night of the 12th. Pomona-Pitzer
got down 2 games to none in the best of five contest, but
stormed back to win the last 3 games, earning a win over the
Alliant team that had soundly defeated the Hens just a
couple weeks ago. Colleen Chrisco had another stellar
night for the Hens, tallying a team high 19 kills on the
night. Renee Faulkner led the Hens with 17 digs and
setter Alysha Lascano dished out 38 assists on the night.
Pomona-Pitzer fell on the road to Cal Lutheran on the
night of the 11th, 3 games to 1. The Hens took the 2nd
game of the match to tie the contest, but the Regals took
the final two frames for the win. Colleen Chrisco
tallied 13 kills to lead the Sagehen cause, while Renee
Faulkner chipped in with 11 of her own. Chrisco also
nabbed team high honors with 18 digs on the night.
The Hens lost a tough 5 game match to Redlands on the
evening of October 8th. Pomona-Pitzer got up 2 games
to 1 after winning the 2nd and 3rd frames, but dropped the
final 2 for the Bulldog win. Katherine Hopkins led the
Sagehens with a team high 16 kills to go along with 17 digs.
Colleen Chrisco had a game high 20 digs on the night and an
impressive 13 kills as well. Jeannie Kenmotsu dished
out 38 assists in the 5 game affair.

Pomona-Pitzer travelled to Redlands on the 26th and got blanked
by the Bulldogs, 5-0. The first half ended with the Hens down
just 1-0, but the home team tallied 4 goals in 15 minutes to seal
the win. The Hens were outshot 23-3 on the afternoon.
Alison Mathes made 10 saves between the posts for the Sagehens.
The Hens hosted Claremont-M-S on the 23rd and fell to the Athenas
by the score of 4-0. Pomona-Pitzer gave up an early goal in
the 8th minute and never recovered, allowing 2 goals in each half of
play. The Hens were outshot 33 to 4 on the afternoon.
Goalkeeper made12 saves in net in 62 minutes before giving way to
Rachel Stephenson.
The Sagehens fell to the Leopards of La Verne on the 19th by the
score of 4-1. Anna Renery scored the lone goal for the Hens to
tie the game in the first half. The second half of play saw
the Hens give up 3 early goals and the hole was then too deep.
Goalkeeper Allison Mathes made 6 saves in 70 minutes for Pomona-Pitzer.
Pomona-Pitzer travelled to Whittier on the 16th and came away
with a 1-1 tie after 2 overtime periods. The 2 goals in the
game were scored within 2 minutes of one another in the first half
of play, and that was it. Katherine Moskop tallied the lone
Hen goal of an assist from Lauren Denny and Anna Renery.
Alison Mathes made 10 saves in net for the Sagehens.
The Sagehens lost at home on the 12th to Occidental, 6-1.
The Hens got into an early hole, falling behind 2-0 in the first 4
minutes of play, and could not recover. Sarah Staller was the
lone goal scorer for the Hens, tallying her goal in the 80th minute
of play.

Water Polo
4-17 Overall 2-0 SCIAC

The Hens played host to the Tigers of Occidental on the 26th
and improved to 2-0 in the SCIAC with a 7-3 win. Glenn
Anderson led the Hens with 3 goals in the game. Ian
Kusao had 2 goals, while Tom Krebs and Ben Speicher each had
1. Carlo Diy had a good game with 9 saves in goal for
the Hens. Pomona-Pitzer held the Tigers to just 1 goal
in the final 3 quarters of play. The Hens opened up the
SCIAC portion of the season with a 13-6 victory over
Caltech. Ben Speicher tallied 8 of the Hens' 13 goals
on the day, while Ian Kusao chipped in with 3 of his own.
Carlo Diy made 5 saves between the pipes for Pomona-Pitzer.
The Hens traveled to Loyola Marymount and fell to the tough
Lion squad by the score of 14-4. Ben Speicher scored
all 4 Pomona-Pitzer goals on the night. In net, Carlo
Diy made 8 saves. The Hens were outscored in all but
the 2nd period, when the two teams played a to a 1-1 tie in
that frame.
The Sagehen squad took part in the Convergence Tournament on
the 11th and 12th, held at Pomona-Pitzer and C-M-S.
The Hens played 4 games over the 2 day event and lost all 4
of them to some tough competition. On Friday the 11th,
the Hens fell to Bucknell and Cal Baptist. On
Saturday, Santa Clara and Iona were victorious over the
Hens. Ben Speicher tallied 17 of the 30 Sagehen goals
on the weekend. Carlo Diy made 15 saves in net for
Pomona-Pitzer.

Women's Cross Country
5-2 Overall 5-2 SCIAC

|
Readily pulling away in the final mile, senior Laura Bishop
won the SCIAC Multi-Dual cross country meet on Oct. 19 at La
Mirada Park. The two-time SCIAC Runner of the Year clocked
17:56 over the 2.95 mile course to lead the Sagehens.
Scoring dual meets against all 7 other conference schools,
Pomona-Pitzer finished 5-2 on the day behind winner
Occidental and Claremont-M-S and ahead of Cal Lutheran, La
Verne, Redlands, Caltech and Whittier.
Behind Bishop, frosh Amy Rapp took 6th (18:31), soph Ann
Prouty took 11th (18:48), junior Susie Roley took 16th
(19:22), and junior Heather Callahan took 19th (19:29).

Men's Cross Country 6-1
Overall 6-1 SCIAC

Frosh Crosby Freeman took third Saturday, Oct. 19 at the
SCIAC Multi-Dual Meet at La Mirada Park to lead the Sagehens
to a 6-1 team finish. Freeman clocked 26:01 over the 8000m
(5 mile) course to lead a flock of Sagehens across the line.
Pomona-Pitzer finished behind Claremont-M-S, and defeated La
Verne, Cal Lutheran, Occidental, Caltech, Whittier, and
Redlands.
Behind Freeman for the Hens were junior Nate DeFelice in 8th
(27:20), David Marshall in 12th (27:31), Chris DuBoise in
13th (27:37), and Golden Krishna in 14th (27:37).
