Since assuming the head coaching duties in 1986, Coach Katsiaficas, "Coach Kat" has led the Sagehens to numerous SCIAC Championships, berths in the NCAA Division III Tournament, including back to back titles and NCAA appearances in 2004 and 2005.
A native of Ellsworth, Maine, Coach Kat attended Tufts University in Boston, where he earned his degree in economics and was elected captain of the basketball team. Prior to coming west in 1984, Coach Kat spent nine months as a player-coach for Lobas, a professional team in Lomma, Sweden. Upon joining the Pomona-Pitzer program, Coach Kat gained valuable experience serving two years as an assistant under Gregg Popovich, who is now the vice president and Head Basketball Coach for three time NBA Champion San Antonio Spurs.
An interim head coach in 1986-87, Coach Kat led Pomona-Pitzer to a second place conference finish. He spent the 1987-88 season as an assistant coach under Hank Egan at the University of San Diego before returning to Pomona-Pitzer in 1988. At USD, Coach Kat's responsibilities also included recruiting, academic counseling, budget, and scouting.
In addition to his coaching duties, Katsiaficas is an
Associate Professor of Physical Education and serves as
Athletic Director and Chair of the Department of Physical
