Lisa Beckett, associate professor of physical education, began coaching the Pomona-Pitzer women's tennis team in 1987, and stepped down in 1998 to spend more time with her family. Beckett is the Senior Women's Administrator and Physical Education Coordinator, and works closely with the Athletic Director in formulating the direction of the department.
Beckett earned a B.A. degree in physical education at Sonoma State University and an M.S. degree in physical education at Washington State University. Beckett played four years of tennis and volleyball, three years of softball, and a year of track at Somona State University. She was a tennis and volleyball team captain and was named the Athlete of the Year in 1979.
Beckett's coaching background includes three years as assistant tennis coach at Washington State University, and one year as assistant coach and two years as head coach at Sonoma State. She holds professional teaching certificates from the U.S. Professional Tennis Association and was an instructor/coach for the University of San Diego Junior Tennis Program and field supervisor for the San Francisco Chapter of the National Junior Tennis League. Coach Beckett also serves on several committees: the NCAA West Regional Advisory Committee, the ITA Awards Committee, and the ITA Ranking Committee. Her favorite tennis quote is by Hazel Wightman: "If you don't miss you will win. If you don't miss, and you can place the ball where you want, I will come watch you play. If you don't miss, can place the ball where you want, and hit hard, I will buy a ticket to watch you play." |
