Pomona-Pitzer baseball…3 players named to ABCA All America Team
Three Pomona-Pitzer college baseball student-athletes were recently named
to the Division III 2002 ABCA All America Team. Junior catcher, Jose
Cortez of Chino, CA, Senior right
handed pitcher, Spike Einsiedler of Falmouth, ME, and Freshman designated
hitter, Jase Turner of Oakland, CA had tremendous seasons for
the Sagehen baseball program, which finished the year with a 36-7 overall
record and 18-0 conference record for the programs first S.C.I.A.C.
championship in 47 years.
Jose Cortez, just taken in
the Major League baseball draft by the Chicago Cubs has been no stranger to the
All American Team. Leading the country
in home runs in 2000, Cortez was selected as a second team All American
designated hitter. The following season
in 2001, leading the country in RBI’s he was named a First Team All American as
a catcher. And finally in 2002, the
switch-hitting slugger hit .500, scored 56 runs, hit 16 homeruns, drove in 65
runners, and set the school records for hits in a season with 77, and doubles
in a season with 24. During Jose’s
three-year career thus far, he is the career record holder in homeruns (50),
RBI’s (192), and Base on Balls (105).
In addition, he set the single season home run record with (17) in both
the 2000 and 2001 seasons, which has recently been tied by Jase Turner. And he currently holds the single season
runs record with (56).
Spike Einsiedler, 2002 team captain,
four-year starter, three year all conference selection, and two year All West
region player, was named a Second Team All America for 2002. The 5-10 175lb. right handed pitcher led the
Sagehens on the mound collecting a school record 10 wins while posting a miniscule
2.05 ERA. In addition to the single
season records, Spike holds the school career record for wins with 25, winning
percentage with .756, and is second all time in career ERA at 2.68. Primarily used as the Sagehens starting
centerfielder and third starter on the mound, Spike made the transition to the
rotations number one spot and led the club to its best record and finish in
conference in the school’s history.
During the senior’s four-year career at Pomona-Pitzer, the team realized
its best overall four-year period. The
2002 senior class held an impressive four-year record of 100-52-2.
Freshman designated hitter, Jase
Turner of Skyline High School in
Oakland, CA was the third Sagehen to be named to the Division III All America
Team. Named a Third team All America in
2002, Turner, who was selected out of high school by the Pittsburgh Pirates in
the 40th round of the 2001 amateur draft, led all designated hitters
with 17 homeruns. Aside from the strong
power numbers, Jase hit a solid .390,
scoring 52 runs, and knocking in 56 runners.
Jase is not only a good hitter, but a very impressive athlete in the
field as well. Occasionally used as a
first baseman, Turner proved to be a steady player on the bag. This summer, Jase will be playing alongside
sophomore All League left handed pitcher Adam Gardner of Pomona-Pitzer in the
exclusive New England Collegiate League with the Thread City Tides baseball
Club.
