| Annually one
of the top teams in conference, Pomona-Pitzer's men's cross country team
boasts an outstanding history of success. The harriers race over 8000m
(5 mile) courses, and the list of successful runners who have worn the
Pomona-Pitzer singlet is a lengthy one. At the conference level,
Pomona-Pitzer men have won 11 SCIAC team titles, including a conference
crown in 2003,
2004,
and 2005. In
the past 25 years, the following Pomona-Pitzer men have won individual
SCIAC Championship meet victories: Gerry Harnett (1978), Nick Buchan
(1979), Sieg Lindstrom (1981 and 1982), David Francis (1983), Rory
Frampton (1984), Avo Artinyian (1993), Crosby Freeman (2003-2005), and Will Leer (2006).
2008 Men's Cross Country Team
The men's team competes in the NCAA III West Region meet, and has
consistently placed well there - eight times earning NCAA Nationals berths as a team. Individually, four athletes have earned All-American honors
at Nationals: Gerry Harnett (1977 and 1978), Adam Boardman (1999),
Crosby Freeman (2002, 2004, 2005), and Will Leer (2006).
Success for the men's cross country program isn't
limited to the race course. By having a total team roster with a
cumulative GPA of over 3.10, the entire squad has earned All-Academic
honors frequently since the award's beginning in 1994, with the 2002
team's GPA of 3.51 standing 2nd among all NCAA III institutions.
The squad trains on the neighborhood streets and bike
paths of idyllic Claremont, and on the rolling dirt fireroads and trails
in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains in northern Claremont. In
recent years, the cross country team has competed in the Alumni meet at
home, the Aztec Invitational in San Diego, the UC Riverside
Invitational, the Stanford Invitational, the SCIAC Multi-Dual Meet in La
Mirada Park, the SCIAC Championship Meet at Prado Park in Chino, and
both the NCAA III West Region and National meets to cap off the season. |
