10/28/00 loss Occidental
d. PP, 27-15
The Sagehens traveled to Eagle
Rock last weekend for a night game and fell short to the Tigers from
Occidental. The loss to Oxy marks the
first time since 1994 that
the Hens have lost three games in a row. The Sagehens got down early in the contest as the first quarter
of play ended with Oxy owning a 14-0 lead.
The tide would
turn for the Hens, however, as they rallied to take a 15-14 lead
going into the fourth quarter of action behind two touchdown passes from
quarterback Matt LaCoss
and a safety credited to Ari Polychronopolous. The Tigers, though, would put two more
scores on the board in the last stanza to come away with the victory. Despite
8 turnovers on the day, the Hens managed to outgain the Tigers by
24 yards on the day.
Ryan Hattersley had another busy
day rushing the football, as he got the call 29 times and put up 98 yards on
the evening. Jonathan Samples carried
the ball 7
times for the Sagehens, picking
up 29 yards, and Matt LaCoss ran the ball 6 times for 20 yards. LaCoss also split time at quarterback with
Teohua Sanchez, as he
completed 8 of 19 passes for 119
yards and two touchdown passes, both to senior Brian Ferrette. Sanchez threw the ball 11 times, completing
7 of those tosses for
54 yards.
Multiple receivers caught balls
for the Sagehens, but leading the charge were Brian Ferrette and Jeremy
Lim. Two of Ferrette’s 3 receptions
resulted in the 2 Hen touchdowns on the day.
His 3 catches gained a total of 61 yards. Lim hauled in 3 balls on the night for a total of 33 yards.
Defensively, the Hens continued
their stingy rush defense by again holding the opponent to under 100 yards on
the ground, and again not giving up a score on the
ground. Individual defensive leaders for the Hens
were Khary Espy with 9 tackles and Ari Polychronopolous with 7 tackles, 3 of
them going for a loss.
The Hens will wrap up the season at 1:00 this Saturday at
home against the Stags from CMS.

MEN’S WATER POLO Overall: 5-12 SCIAC: 1-2
10/28/00 win PP d.
Chapman, 6-5
The
Hen’s water polo team rose up in the fourth quarter for a come from behind win
over Chapman on Saturday. The three
Pomona-Pitzer scoring leaders – Marc
Cavagnolo, Ryan Williams, and Ben Speicher, each tallied
a goal while the defense shut out the visitors’ efforts to erase a 3-5 deficit
for the one goal victory. Coach Gary
Troyer noted, “We really needed that win. We have a little momentum now for the final
weeks of the season. We were forced to
play without Cavagnolo for much of the first
half because of
foul trouble and that allowed Chapman to get a 2 goal lead. After we came back to full strength in the
last period, we were able to dominate the action.”
The
Hens have a busy week as they will play Caltech at home on Wednesday, CMS at
home on Friday night, and then travel to Whittier for a noontime game on
Saturday.
