The Sagehens played La Verne to a 1-1 draw on Wednesday afternoon. It is the second time this season that Pomona-Pitzer and La Verne have tied. Wednesday’s contest was frustrating for the Sagehens, as they had many chances to put the game away in regulation, but were not able to convert their goal-scoring opportunities. La Verne’s keeper made 12 saves on the day and the Leopard defense managed to kick several balls away at the last second to preserve the tie.

Pomona-Pitzer controlled the first half of play with good possession and creative play. The Sagehens took 11 shots, eight on goal, in the period. Lily Muldoon finally broke through in the 42nd minute to get the Sagehens on the scoreboard. Muldoon combined with Angie Martinez up the line, and sent in a long, high ball that the goalkeeper could not handle. The goal was Muldoon’s first of the season and Martinez picked up the assist on the play for her 16th point. The score stood at 1-0 at halftime, but La Verne got themselves back in the game early in the second half, scoring in the 53rd minute. The rest of the half saw both teams with chances on goal. The Sagehens looked ready to score on multiple occasions, as they pressed hard to get the lead back. Kim Ye appeared to have the game-winner near the end of regulation, but her header was cleared off the line at the last second. A couple goal mouth scrambles in front of the La Verne net also turned out fruitless for the Sagehens. The stalemate continued into overtime, as neither team was able to find the back of the net to get the golden goal.

The tie brings Pomona-Pitzer’s overall record to 7-4-3 and their SCIAC record to 4-2-2. The first two games in the second round of SCIAC play duplicate the results from the first round for Pomona-Pitzer. Following their loss to Redlands and tie with La Verne in September, the Sagehens ran off four straight SCIAC wins to finish the first round in 1st place. The race for the championship is tightly bunched with four games to go. Six of the seven SCIAC teams are within striking distance of winning the conference title and it’s looking like the championship will go down to the wire. Next up, the Sagehens travel to Eagle Rock to take on the Occidental Tigers. The game will be played Saturday, Oct. 22nd at 11:00 a.m.
