Pomona-Pitzer went on the road to face Cal Lutheran in a SCIAC match pairing the #2 and #3 ranked teams in the conference. In a closely contested game, the Sagehens came out on top when freshman defender Katherine DeJong fought through a crowd to put away the game-winner just 11 seconds from the end of the second overtime.
The first half saw Pomona-Pitzer clearly in control of the game. Although they took five shots on goal, they weren’t able to put any past the Cal Lu goalkeeper and the game went to halftime in a 0-0 draw. The second half brought some sloppy play, as the wind picked up in Thousand Oaks and both teams had some chances. Pomona-Pitzer goalkeeper Kelsyn Bevins was knocked out of the game with a wrist injury and Caroline Bevins came on the field to mind the net under tough circumstances. She was up to the challenge, keeping Cal Lu off the scoreboard and keeping the Sagehens in the game.
Still tied 0-0 at the end of regulation, the game went into sudden death overtime. Neither team created any real chances on goal in the first 10-minute overtime, but the second overtime brought lots of action as both teams pushed for the game-winner. With the clock winding down in the last minute, Pomona-Pitzer earned a free kick at the midfield. The ball was served in towards goal and Jane Philips battled to keep it in the box. As she fought to get control, Philips was fouled near the left corner, giving the Sagehens a free kick with just 20 seconds left on the clock. Having the last opportunity to win the game, Pomona-Pitzer threw all their numbers into the box. Freshman Elli Seo served in a beautiful bent ball that eluded the goalkeeper and made its way across the goal. Among the crowd at the back post was DeJong, who slid the ball into the net with just 11 seconds remaining in the game. It was DeJong’s first collegiate goal, coming in very exciting fashion to give Pomona-Pitzer the 1-0 win over the Regals. |
