Pomona-Pitzer and Cal Lutheran matched up t in a 109-minute epic battle. Both teams fought for possession early in the game, with neither squad taking control. But with about ten minutes remaining in the first period, the Sagehens began to pressure the Regals, challenging goalkeeper Kristin Borzi. With time expiring in the first half, Sagehen freshman Katy Metcalf found the back of the net, giving Pomona-Pitzer a 1-0 lead at halftime.
In the second half, the Sagehens controlled the ball well, but a foul called against the Hens in the box gave Cal Lutheran's Jessica Dingman a penalty kick. Shooting the ball out of the reach of Pomona-Pitzer senior goalkeeper Caroline Flynn, Dingman tied the game. As time wound down with the game tied 1-1, the game became more physical. In regulation, two yellow cards were assessed and 17 fouls were called. By the end of 90 minutes, neither team had scored, and it wasn’t until the last minute of the second overtime period that Cal Lutheran’s Kelsey Sullivan scored the winning goal for the Regals.
Pomona-Pitzer will continue SCIAC play this Saturday when they take on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at home.
