Pomona-Pitzer beat CMS today in a decisive 3-0 victory. The game was played on Pomona-Pitzer’s home field, with a considerable numbers of fans celebrating both family weekend and senior day.
The Sagehens came out on the attack from the beginning, with a number of chances within the first few minutes. Jenni Hebein took a promising shot that hit the cross bar, and forwards Angie Martinez and Paige Maas also had some close opportunities. The CMS goalkeeper was tested a number of times making some impressive saves. Sagehen goalkeeper Caroline Flynn was also on top of her game, making several crucial saves to keep the game scoreless. Just when it looked like the half might end 0-0, Angie Martinez caught the keeper off her line, slotting one into the back of the net in the 44th minute.
The second half’s intensity matched the start of the first half, and continued to prove physical as a number of fouls were called on each side. In the 64th minute, forward Paige Maas got a low and dangerous cross off; a scramble ensued, as forward Katy Metcalf forced a rebound off the keeper and midfielder Traci Lopez finally shot the ball in for the 2-0 lead. The very next minute of the game saw another Sagehen goal, this time from midfielder Jenni Hebein, with a powerful shot from just outside the eighteen. The Saghens held off the CMS attack and finished the game with the shut-out.
The win puts Pomona-Pitzer’s SCIAC record at 4-4-1 with just three SCIAC games left to determine standings before the SCIAC tournament. The next game is tomorrow against Macalester. And next SIAC game is at Occidental on October 22nd.
