Pomona-Pitzer took on Macalester College of Minnesota this Saturday in a non-SCIAC contest. It was a tough battle that ended 3-2 in favor of the Sagehens. The first goal came just eight minutes into the game when freshman Traci Lopez finished a long cross sent in by freshman defender Martha Marich. However, Macalester’s Maddie Mette answered quickly when she beat the Hen’s goalkeeper in a one on one to score. The half ended with both teams tied at one goal apiece.
Macalester came out quickly in the second half, scoring a goal ten minutes in the half, putting the Fighting Scots up 2-1. As the hard-fought competition continued, both teams battled to keep possession in the heat. A handball in the box by a Macalester defender gave the Sagehens a penalty kick in the box. Freshman Katy Metcalf placed the ball in the lower left corner of the goal and tied the game for the Hens. Pomona-Pitzer got their last goal in the 81st minute to take the lead for good, when Metcalf challenged Macalester’s goalkeeper as she went up to catch a corner kick taken by junior Elli Seo. The goalkeeper landed behind the goal line to give the Hens a 3-2 lead. During the game the Sagehens had 15 shots, forcing Macalester’s goalkeeper Jenny Lee to make nine saves. Macalester had six shots on Pomona-Pitzer’s goalkeeper Caroline Flynn, who made four saves.
The Sagehens will continue SCIAC play on Wednesday when they take on Occidental.
