The Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens extended their shutout streak in SCIAC play to three games today in their match against Whittier. Supported by a strong defense, which gave up only three shots throughout the game, the Hens were able to control the game for a 7-0 victory.
The first goal came 10 minutes into the game when freshman Traci Lopez laid the ball off for freshman Jenni Hebein who buried the ball in the back of the net. Just three minutes later, sophomore Heather Wegner crossed the ball into Angie Martinez’s head for a second goal. Near the middle of the first half Whittier’s Amanda Martinez fired a dangerous shot on the Hens’ goal but senior Caroline Flynn came up with a big save, tipping the ball over the crossbar and out of play. Then, junior Elli Seo assisted a goal by Rachel Eckerlin before scoring herself off of a long pass from sophomore Hannah Carr. These two goals came in the final minute of the half, giving the Hens a 4-0 lead at halftime.
The Hens came out in the second half to add three more goals and command the rest of the game. Senior Paige Maas followed in Rachel Eckerlin’s free kick to the far post for a goal. Less than a minute later Maas played a through ball to freshman Katy Metcalf who found the lower corner of the goal on the breakaway. Fighting through the heat, the Sagehens continued to increase their lead as Hannah Carr added a final goal in the 88th minute. Pomona-Pitzer will continue SCIAC play this Saturday, October 4th, at La Verne. |
