Pomona-Pitzer took a hard loss to La Verne, losing 3-2 in overtime. Despite a promising start to the game, in which the Sagehens consistently tested La Verne’s defense and keeper, the La Verne Leopard’s managed to sneak in 3 goals for the win.
The first goal was Pomona-Pitzer’s, and it came in the 24th minute, with a low shot from forward Elli Seo, sliding through the keeper’s hands. The Sagehen’s continued to control the first half but couldn’t find the back of the net again and went into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
In the second half, La Verne’s speedy forward Felisha Ramirez managed to sprint by the defense and chip the ball into the net, tying up the game in the 56th minute. Pomona-Pitzer responded two minutes later, with another goal by forward Elli Seo. The goal came with an assist from one of defender Chelsea Muir’s powerful free kicks. The flurry of goals continued, as La Verne struck right back when Ashley Cendejas took a shot from outside the eighteen, tying the game up yet again in the 60th minute. Despite several promising attacking opportunities by the Sagehens throughout the remainder of the second half, the score stayed, throwing the game into overtime.
The Sagehens stepped into the first 10 minute half of golden goal overtime clearly determined to win but could not slide any of their chances in the net. In the second chunk of overtime, Falisha Ramirez again turned and sped past Pomon-Pitzer’s defensive line, finishing the game off with La Verne’s third goal in the 102nd minute. Although the Sagehen’s out shot the Leopard’s 14 to 2 over the course of the extended game, La Verne capitalized on their few chances, taking the victory.
The loss puts Pomona-Pitzer’s SCIAC record at 2-3-1, wrapping up the first round. The Saghen’s take on La Sierra next, on October 8th. The second round of SCIAC play begins with a home game against Redlands on October 11th. |
