The Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens beat Redlands 1-0 in a match that went into the last minute of overtime. The victory came on the Sagehen’s home turf, finally reversing the five-year curse that has left Pomona without a win against the Bulldogs.
The first half proved to be a contest between two evenly matched teams. The Sagehens created many attacking opportunities, but also had to shut down the Redlands attack. Faced with several free kicks near the goal, the Sagehen’s showed their presence in the air and frustrated the Redlands attack. Pomona’s confidence on defending set pieces would be echoed later in the game in their attacking end. The half ended in a promising opportunity by Elli Seo, with a shot just missing the frame.
Again, both teams came out strong in the second half. Attacks kept coming from both sides, but the nets remained empty. Pomona’s corner kicks provided several dangerous, though unfinished chances for the Hens. Overtime demanded a few crucial saves from Pomona’s goalkeeper Caroline Flynn, as the contest continued. In the 109th minute, with forty seconds remaining, a handball just outside the eighteen provided Pomona with a free kick. Junior Elli Seo went for the shot, landing it in the upper left, outside the keeper’s reach. With 8 seconds left Pomona-Pitzer had clinched the victory. The total shots on goal proved to be fairly even for the match. Redlands had nine shots, three on goal and Pomona-Pitzer took eight shots, four on goal. The win gives the Sagehens a promising start to the second round of SCIAC play. With a 3-3-1 SCIAC record, the Hens next take on Cal Lutheran on October 15th at home. |
